Thanks for the video. Very interesting to see how huge that tap root was. I have a mulberry cutting in a pot for now that will go in my garden and I have other cuttings that may stay in pots, depending on how much time I have to get them situated in safe area away from water pipes. They certainly are vigorous trees.

I used to cycle to work through a park, and there were heaps of mulberry trees growing along the creek. I took some cuttings and grew 2 plants. It was weird. When i had them in these fairly big pots they grew impressively fast. Never seen any other cutting grow like that before. Finally i figured they were too big for the pots so i planted them in the backyard... and the growth seemed to stop. I would have assumed that given the free reign to go wild with their roots, they would have exploded based on how fast they grew in the confined pots. It maybe that where i planted them isnt getting enough sun. Only thing i can think of.

It's normal for most trees to stop growing once planted. Your tree will resume growing once fully rooted in ground. This process depending on ambient temperatures can take 6 months to over a year.

Will that tap root continue to grow into the ground again in that 15 gallon container? If a customer buys the 15 gallon, then plants it into the ground, with the tree continue to grow the tap root and be as stable as the small tree.

Grew up in Tucson, we had a huge pakistan mulberry tree in the front yard.. unfortunately, as a kid, didnt know the berries were edible!! (arugh!) It was a bird's Heaven! it was a fun climbing tree tho.. (could hide up there from the school truant officer when I ditched school ( lol) Loved this tree! There was some disease that killed many mulberry trees and we lost ours. Want another. Hope that issue/disease is far gone.

Have you ever experienced the root in the ground continue to grow into another tree? Would I need to dig all those in ground roots out? If you let it grow long enough (several years) yes it will grow a new tree. But the top part you pruned will most likely die. This is why I don't recommend letting them grow in the ground longer than a year before pruning.

@musaadfelton3909 As mentioned in the video, you can do something called root pruning if you intend to keep it for many years in a container. For most trees, every 2-3 years, during the dormant season, take them out of the pot and prune the roots back. Try to keep the tap root in tact because they might become stunted and end up being a mulberry bush if they don't have their tap root. Freshen the soil in the container and repot the tree. Root pruning is how bonsai trees are made. So technically you could keep it in a pot indefinitely if you don't intend to put it in the ground. However, mulberries are very vigorous growers so you might have to do this every year rather than every 2-3 years. Good luck.
