I want Alan to stay forever, but if he ever decides to leave, this clip makes me think that Aisling would be a great replacement. The dynamic here, with the intellectual Sandi watching helplessly as Aisling struggled with her very simple instructions, reminds me of Stephen and Alan's dynamic (or Sandi and Alan).

Here's how this works: The initial 3-digit number can be represented as 100a + 10b + c, where a is the number in the hundreds place, b in the tens place, and c in the ones place. a, b, and c are all numbers between 0 and 9 inclusive. e.g. 827 = 100×8 + 10×2 + 7, where a = 8, b = 2, c = 7 The reversed number is therefore 100c + 10b + a Let's assume the initial number is the bigger one and subtract the second number from it. (It doesn't matter which one is actually bigger, since we are just subtracting the smaller number from the larger number): = 100a + 10b + c - (100c + 10b + a) = 100a - a + 10b - 10b + c - 100c = 99a - 99c = 99(a - c) As you can see the result is always a multiple of 99 (99 times a-c). We can actually already stop here with an explanation: 1089 is 99×11, and any two numbers that add up to 11 multipled by 99 will be reverses of each other e.g. 99×3 = 297 and 99×8 = 792 So reversing the result of the first subtraction and adding them together will always result in 1089. That's what's happening in the second part of the trick. To see this spelled out in more detail, read on. Let x = (a - c). As we will see, it doesn't matter what a and c are anymore from this point. We know that the result of the first subtraction is 99x but we need to put this into a similar format that we had before (100a + 10b + c) so that we can reverse it: 99x = 100x - x = 100x - 100 + 100 - x = 100(x - 1) + 90 + 10 - x = 100(x - 1) + 10×9 + (10-x) This represents 99x in that format where a = x-1, b = 9, c = 10-x So the reverse of this number = 100(10-x) + 10×9 + (x-1) Adding both of those together gives: 100(x-1) + 90 + (10-x) + 100(10-x) + 90 + (x-1) = 101(x-1) + 101(10-x) + 180 = 101(x - 1 + 10 - x) + 180 = 101×9 + 180 Notice that the x term cancels out, i.e. it doesn't matter what a and c are. This of course gives us 1089, meaning that whatever 3-digit number we start with, the result of this process will always be 1089.

Never describe a womans outfit as flirtatious. That leads to the whole clothing is not consent stuff. Just because you think a woman is dressed a certain way does not mean she is up for it or looking to pull. She just likes thats style or outfit. So decribing an outfit as flirtatious is a slippery slope. Though i wanna be clear that im not accusing you of anything, just saying its a little icky to call an outfit flirtatious due to the connotations that arise from it.

Let the original number be ABC, that is, 100*A + 10*B + C Here A, B and C are digits, whole numbers from 0 to 9. In order to be a three-digit number, presumably A is not zero. Then its reverse is: 100*C + 10*B + A Subtracting the smaller from the larger, you get: 99*A - 99*C or 99*C - 99*A Notice that the B's drop out. Suppose A > C, so it is the former result you get. (The same kind of argument works for A < C; A = C is one of the exceptions below.) Let us assume the difference is a number DEF i.e. 99*(A-C) = 100*D + 10*E + F Notice that 0 < A-C

@@illuminati4786 Yes there is, complex refering to how you have to do multiple stages to work it out. Taken from the definition as a general adjective not from the purely mathmatical denotation in which 'complex addition' does still exist "Consisting of many different and connected parts" adding two six digit numbers is clearly more complex than just adding 2+2. Either way its pretty straightforward that she was just adding the tens column of 9+9... which was my entire point.

Plot twist: “mentalist” trick. Actually this method always gives 1089 as an answer based on math. Thus the book known in advance, the number known in advance, gives the word. It’s a magician’s choice mentalist trick.

Let us suppose that x and y are the first and last digits. Then the result of the subtraction is... 99*(|x-y|) x and y are 1 digit numbers. So the only possible values of |x-y| are 0...9. lets say b=|x-y|. if b > 0 then the addition is 100*b+90+(9-b)+100*(9-b)+90+b =100*b+90+9-b+900-100*b+90+b =100*b-100*b+b-b+90+9+900+90 =1089, always However, note that if x=y then b=0, and the subtraction gives 000, so if the first person chooses the same number as the last person, the illusionist must suggest that they choose a different number. Probably people are psychologically disposed to all choose different numbers, so it probably never happens. Also, the middle number gets subtracted from itself, the middle person is just a distraction.

So, take a three digit number `abc` (note, `ab` here will mean concatenation in base 10, not multiplication), and subtract from it `cba` (then take the absolute value, or assume `a !< c`, as I will here). The answer will be 100 * (a - c) + c - a = 100 * (a - c) - (a - c). Now we have 2 cases: a - c = 0, and not that. Hence forth, assume a - c != 0 (=> a != c). For any digit `x`, let `x̅` be its ten's compliment, then the result of the subtraction is (a - c - 1)9(̅a̅ ̅-̅ ̅c̅)̅. Now, we sum this result, and its reverse: (a - c - 1)9(̅a̅ ̅-̅ ̅c̅)̅ + (̅a̅ ̅-̅ ̅c̅)̅9(a - c - 1). Note that the sum of a digit and its ten's compliment is, by definition, 10. So we have 100 * (10 - 1) + 10 * (18) + 1 * (10 - 1) = 1089. Tada. Here's hoping overlines render better in a real comment than in this preview box. Also, if you're seeing a lot of weird boxes, your browser doesn't have a font to render overlines, so just imagine that box isn't there, and there's a line over the character before it. Edit: Eh, it renders ok. It looks like that character is really supposed to go over two characters, like x̅y, rather than just one.

The starting numbers are unimportant* (see update at the end), if you do that order of actions you will always get 1089, You can prove this with algebra, if you want I can show you the prove it just might get a bit mangled when put into ascii characters. Update: I did I little more playing around with the trick and I've found a case were it doesn't work, if the first and last numbers are the same, eg 313 or 454. However it doesn't matter if the middle number matches either the first or last number, eg 332 and 244 would work. Meaning the trick will work for about 90% of all possible 3 figure numbers.

If you take a 3 digit number where the 1st and 3rd digit are different, you’ll end up with a 3 digit number where “9” is always in the middle and the 1st and 3rd digit equal “9” when added together. You can do this with any 2-digit number (where the numbers are different) and end up with “99”. You can do this with any 4-digit number (where the 2nd and 3rd digit are different) and end up with 10,890.
