+kisbie As far as I know, they're friends as well as collegues - besides having worked together several times when Sandi was hosting The News Quiz, she attended Susan's wedding, and possibly the other way round, not sure exactly how long they've known each other - so it's more good-natured ribbing amongst friends than just a random jab. :) And yeah, her singing can sometimes go a bit off the rails, but I've also heard her belt one out beautifully on an episode of I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue, so I guess it just depends. :)

I work on sets. One day Julie Andrews strode up to me on her first visit to set before she started working officially. I happened to be standing beside the director. In my career I have been around countless celebrities and never once really cared. It's just a job. As Julie Andrews stood there gushing about how happy she was to join the cast and crew, sometimes directly at me, I felt like a 7 year old. My entire childhood flooded back and if she had asked me a direct question I wouldn't have been able to speak a word. True story.

Alan was quoting lines and lyrics from the movie " the sound of music" but he was doing it in a rough accent. He was also doing it in a way filled with innuendo. Which if you've seen the movie is well out of place, for who'd be singing the lines. In most cases Julie Andrews. It was quite funny to an old fogey like myself, or in this case Sandy, who's heard all the lines before. Think of your favorite frilly little character who's always prim and proper and then all of the sudden they sound like your chain smoking drunkard uncle when they open their mouth. It's a shock to your senses and can make you laugh. Comedy is like food. Everyone likes something different. Or has a different point of view they are seeing it from. But just because I don't like bell peppers doesn't stop stores from selling them. or people from stuffing and cooking them. My two cents, hope this helps.

I thought Sandi Toksvig's burn ("It's like that but with a tune") to Susan Calman was much funnier, particularly Calman's reaction (i.e. irritation that she couldn't think of a come back).

Compare and contrast to Jimmy Carr who'd have something on standby to destroy her. Not a huge fan of his standup but in person or on the spot when he's improvising, he's genuinely witty and especially cruel with putdowns.

Alan was quoting lines and lyrics from the movie " the sound of music" but he was doing it in a rough northern almost cockney accent. My two cents hope this helps.

Robin Garrison I'm a huge fan of Alan and Sandi, but although I'm an Anglophile, sadly I'm an American one. I'd 'seen' most of the joke in Alan's impression but was confused, since Julie obviously doesn't talk that way. Your comment helped me see that this is precisely why it was so funny to Sandi, thanks.

Janne Aalto I listened to it 3 times and was able to get most of what he said, if you're wondering: "Do you like 'em tied up with string? I'll bet you do, girl! I'll bet you do! What's a deer, what's a female deer? Come on! Oh Julie, leave it alone. I'll get the puppets out, I'll get the puppets out, do you wanna see the goatherd, you wanna see the goatherd? *badly impersonates the song The Lonely Goatherd* It wasn't me singing. *keeps singing* I'm on with Maria - I'll be back with ya - on Maria. What's up, Julie?"

@@michaellejeune7715 It does sound like "I'm Maria" but Alan was pretending to be someone interviewing Julie Andrews (and calling her Maria). He says "I'm on with Maria" and gestures as though there's someone there, then turns to the audience and says "I'll be back with ya" and then turns back to the imaginary Julie and says "on Maria" meaning he's continuing the interview.

Austrian speaking. Near to none Austrians actually know this film or the musical, and yet it still is the first thing English speaking people ask you about when mentioning your home country. It's actually really funny to have someone foreign teach you something seemingly useless about your own country while getting all excited or offended (much like Sandi at 1:47 ).

Mostly the same with Braveheart which is one of those films a lot of people in Scotland saw 23 years ago when it came out but few since. But elsewhere I think they must show it regularly, I wouldn't mind if it was at least vaguely historically accurate.
