Welcome to Singapore 🇸🇬 We are not overly warm , but are naturally responsive and helpful when needed. Young travelers who come from Mainland China are also respectful , highly educated , curious and courteous. There is zero reason to be hostile to them .
As a Singaporean, I am not used to Hongkongers - culture and humour - as well. Both nations are competitive but PAP and Lee Kuan Yew worked hard to build a foundation of respect for all people. In other words, Singaporeans are taught to fight issues, not people.
Went hk a few time asked for directions and help from a few ppl, we spoke to them in English + mandarin so they didn't know that my mum knows Cantonese. All of them are mumbling insults , not outright but loud enuff to hear what they say. Hotel staffs are better, but not sure if it the same behind our backs They like to speak in a roundabout manner + innuendo Absolutely nv wanna go hk again

当时我也是五味杂陈,不知道是庆幸自己会英语还是可怜大陆人!😢 Let me reiterate in English my observation of Hong Kongers in their natural state. They are much more impatient and easily agitated compared to Singaporeans. Due to the recent history of conflict between hong Kongers and mainlanders, they seem to have an aversion to the mandarin language whereby I once had an encounter where I was queuing up behind a mainlander to get directions to a place and the policeman, upon hearing mandarin, became very impatient and abrasive in guiding the mainlander while when my turn came, I spoke in English and the policeman immediately change his stance and became polite and friendly in guiding me. I had mixed feelings at that time, not sure if I should rejoice that I spoke in English or to feel pity for the mainlander before me! 😢
The main problem is first -The strong Cantonese Supremacy mindset in Hong Kong and second - the growing anti-mainlander mentality as Mainlanders get richer & live better than what Hongkongers are accustomed to.
Not exactly, In Singapore 40%Hokkien (Fujian), 20% Teochew (Guangzhou), 15% Cantonese (Guangzhou), 8% Hakka (Guangzhou), Hainanese (Hainan) 7%. If you add Teochew, Cantonese, and Hakka under the 'Guangzhou' umbrella - it would be Cantonese 广东人 (Guangdong province origins) the majority!
The different is you are asking customer service people in Singapore and this is their duty to show you the direction. However, this is not the shopkeeper's duty. After all, the shopkeeper could be migrated from China when they were young, so why do you think that they are not accepting the change in China. This is a no fair statement.

Please don't compare Singapore to Hong Kong, it totally different. Singaporeans are friendly .
ask yourself, everything is yourself. see how your people behave. 要入鄉隨俗。

是的。大概率是因为我并不了解香港。今年去读书,希望近距离了解香港。

Sadly, the service people whom I encounterd in HK are generally quite rude. Their customer service really below average, when though I speak Cantonese.
You are damn right, HK service level is terrible compare to Singapore & Taiwan. Wish you best for your HK education!

You must see things from Hong Konger's point of view, not from your own mainland Chinese view. Before 1997, Hong Kong is under British rule, so Hong Kongers see China as Communist Dictatorship. Mainland Chinese however see Hong Kong as returning to China inevitably. After 1997, Hong Kongers found themselves "under" Chinese rule. You may say this is inevitable but seeing from Hong Kong point of view, they cannot accept Communist Dictatorship. Be aware of sentiments from their point of view, hopefully your September trip will go well. But expect hostile treatment whenever you speak China accent.
