Fact check: the modern kilt is (controversially) attributed to the Englishman Thomas Rawlinson (which would match QI’s statement which in turn omits that a certain type of kilt is meant) but before that it was a traditional garment of the Gaels, which includes both the Scottish AND the Irish Gaelic people. The distinction between Scots and Irish probably had its onset later than the invention of the kilt :) same with the bagpipes. In fact, the Scot William Paterson's proposals for a central bank were never acted upon. It was Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax who devised the Bank of England three years later. However, neither originated the idea of a central bank. That was an identical proposal of Philip Burlamachi, a financial middle-man acting for Charles 1 that pre-dated that of William Paterson by 58 years. Philip Burlamachi was born in France of a family of Italian origins. So, not, a Scot did not invent the Bank of England as the idea was identical to that of a French-Italian's proposal, and neither was implemented. The eventual bank was deviced by Charles Montagu.

I think Fleming accidentally discovered penicillin, but it was an Australian that made it actually work.
@gregroberts17003 жыл бұрын
In truth it was a large number of scientists and researchers who’s contributions were finally able to lead to the mass production of penicillin. Fleming discovered it yes, not through luck as some suggest, but by his extremely able scientific observational skills and intrigue. Cecil George Paine successfully treated an infant with ophthalimia neonatorum with a penicillin extract, ten years prior to Folrey (the aussie) who led a group of oxford researchers to make some significant progress by producing a concentrated penicillin sample from a fungal culture broth that was able to treat a patient for a short while, however as it wasn't readily available so the patient sadly died. It was only when it was massed produced it was effective, thanks to American pharmaceutical corporations, people like Chain and Fleming who further contributed by successfully treating a fatal infection of meningitis of a patience nervous system, or even contributions of Hodgkin that determined the chemical structure of penicillin while Sheehan that that completed the first chemical synthesis of penicillin. So like with most inventions (as the television, the Lightbulb and even the Telephone) its the work of a large group that each contributed an integral part to its discovery, invention or innovation. So I'd say Scots can be proud to have fellow Scots that have massively contributed in these inventions and hope more Scots can step up with the intention to continue to contribute to such scientific break throughs that further man-kind. Same with fellow Australians, Amdericans, female scientists, English and other Brit nations that all have contributed to a lifesaving medicine!

If history shows Alexander Graham Bell was credited with the invention of the telephone and won the dispute, due to the evidence he provided in court and John Logie Baird was credited with the invention of television after the first public demonstration of his working model, where's the evidence to suggest otherwise? Also, I note football wasn't mentioned here, even though the game, as we know it today, started in Scotland. The English version was more like rugby, until a Scot came up with the method of passing by foot. Æ 🤔

A bit of a stretch to say the Australian National Anthem was a Scottish invention. While it is true that the composer was born in Glasgow, he emigrated to Australia age 20 or 21 and spent the rest of his life in Sydney. Much of the time he was a teacher at Plunkett Street Public School in Woolloomooloo. He wrote a patriotic song about his new country because of his love for the country he called home. He never forgot Scotland, and wrote many Scottish songs, but Advance Australia Fair was, by his own words never intended to be Scottish. He had attended an exhibition where all the world’s anthems were played, and he said was “aggravated that not one note for Australia“ was played. He thought that Australia deserved an Australian written anthem of its own and was already composing it in his head on the journey home. The song became very popular and at the Inauguration event for the newly independent nation of Australia on 1st January 1901 the song was sung by a choir of 10,000 voices. A grateful New South Wales Government awarded him a hundred pounds, and Peter Dodds McCormick, formerly of Glasgow, Scotland, has gone into the history books as a great Australian, proud of his country, and patriotic to his core. And remembered for writing the very Australian song Advance Australia Fair, in Australia, by a very patriotic and proud Australian citizen. We are glad and thankful that Glasgow nurtured his early years. But we are also glad that he chose to make Australia his home, and that he loved his country so much as to make such an important contribution to its birth as a new nation, and shedding the shackles of the old country.

You are correct. Both of them were Canadians. However, The 1923 Noble Prize for the discovery was awarded to Banting & JJR MacLeod. Banting was the main Guy, Best was his Lab Assistant & MacLeod was their Boss at Toronto University. MacLeod WAS Scottish. Not sure how much he actually contributed but he won a Nobel Prize.

Not even close. Fleming didn't discover penicillin at all or do anything to lead to the "accidental" discovery. Lots of others isolated what makes penicillin what it is ages before, and Louis Pasteur of all people was the first to do it in 1870-ish.
@darthos62577 жыл бұрын
What Fleming did was make it accessible to people and bring it into the limelight. He wasn't the discoverer, though. Not by a long shot. Still a great man.

+LS* It's not an uncommon thing for true inventors not to be credited for their discoveries, especially if they were from a disadvantaged social class e.g. the poor, women, not white, etc. or for one person to take credit when it was a mutual effort. They even mentioned Alexander Graham Bell in the clip, he's a perfect example. The real genius who invented the telephone was a poor Italian immigrant, yet hardly anyone knows his name

All information I can find points to that the kilt was a Scottish invention and marmalade was only marginally changed into a spread in Scotland.
@kaywho64772 жыл бұрын
yeah the kilt definitely was a scottish invention. it was developed from a cloak into the feileadh mhor or “great kilt” and dates back a least to the 15th century. it’s factually incorrect that the kilt is irish. the dress kilt was adopted by the irish in the 20th century as a way for the irish to feel closer to their gaelic heritage. in fairness the modern dress kilt was actually developed by an englishman, but kilts are scottish and tartans have been in scotland since the roman era (the oldest being the falkirk tartan found stuffed into a clay pot in falkirk).

Whilst Maxwell did produce equations that united electric and magnetic fields, they bear little resemblance to the form that we now call Maxwell's equations. Maxwell's originally had 20, coupled partial differential equations. It was Oliver Heaviside who reformulated Maxwell's equations using the vector calculus that he was jointly responsible for developing. That took those 20 cumbersome equations and refined them into the four elegant ones we have now. Oliver Heaviside was responsible for much else besides including half the terminology used in electromagnetism and communications. He was a genius, but awkward, intransigent, antisocial and highly eccentric. He was Britain's equivalent of Nikola Tesla.
