I thought _The Tale of Genji_ was the world's first novel? Ah wait, she says _Don Quixote_ is the world's first *modern* novel. What's the difference?

Very good question; I think "The Tale of Genji" is usually recognized as the oldest novel (by world literature experts), although, when it was written, it was more of serialized tales, circulated in the Heian court. The QI elves probably said "Don Quixote" is the oldest novel because it's one the Europeans and Americans have heard of.

They mean the first novel of the Modern Era (ie. after ~1500 AD). There have of course been many novels from various regions between The Tale of Genji and Don Quixote.

Wrong answers get negatives; there's no set points. Most/least is -10/+10. Most of the ones that get the text behind them are -10. Entertainment factor goes into the actual points and its determined behind the scenes, by the 'elves'
