Jodi, I think the fact that everywhere in Europe, a lot of places in Asia and many places in Africa had soldiers on the ground, bombs, invasions, etc and the USA never had anything happen on the mainland means that there is an apathy to WW2 there.

The QI elves are a team of researchers who find topics and Stephen or later Sandi starts the conversations , there is an alarm that goes off if someone comes up with an obvious answer . A somewhat odd premise for a quiz but it's become an unmissable event for its many fans . Alan Davies ( Johnathon Creek - a mystery series well worth a look ) is permanently on the panel and the guests aren't always comedians . Each series the topics start with a single letter of the alphabet . I enjoy your reviews and I think it's a great show to react to together .

QI, or Quite Interesting has been going for so long now, it was always better with Stephen Fry hosting it. It followed through the alphabet with its seasons, with each episode having a key word. So funny, and you always learn something new, such a great concept. Best guests to watch on QI are Bill Bailey, Phill Jupitus and David Mitchell. Find any episode with 1 or more of those in it, and it will be a good one.

There are more decrnt sized youtubes available, some could be compilations, but worth watching. QI is exactly that, it discusses factual things in a comical way, which is why i love it. Stephen Fry hosted the first 13 series, and Sandi Toksvig has so far hosted the previous 7, i do like her, but personally I prefer the older ones.

She then added "But you never met Hitler did you?" Fortunately for Stephen, the answer was "No!". First;y, he was born about 13 years after Hitler's death. Secondly (and possibly more importantly), Stephen's mother and her family were Jewish.

Americans and Canadians have a history of enlisting in the other nations' military in the outbreak of war. Many Canadians enlisted in the Union Army, and later for Vietnam. Americans headed north to Canada early in WWI & II. One Texan became a RCAF Dambuster pilot and was awarded by King George VI.

One can find full episodes of QI and QI XL on KZbin, XL being the longer version of the same episode. They run alphabetically so series one is the letter A, series two is B and so forth and each episode in that series will link to the letter, so themes, answers etc. They're definitely worth a watch, even just privately.

Re pivotal moments in history where alternate events could have changed everything - 1888 is known in Germany as the year of the 3 Kaisers and is regarded as one of those moments. Kaiser Friedrich came to power after Wilhelm 1 had died - he was married to Vicky, Queen Victoria's eldest, who was an intellect and progressive. She and Friedrich were intent on enabling this new united Germany to become a true parliamentary democracy similar to the British model. This was not to the liking of Chancellor Bismark or to their own son, Wilhelm, who wished for an autocratic monarchy. Unfortunately for the world, Friedrich died after only a few months and Wilhelm came to power and the events that followed led to where we all are now.

It's a UK panel show. Standard premise - host asks questions, the panel tries to out joke each other while paying the game aspect lip service. The difference with QI is the questions - The obvious most known answer is always wrong - in Quite an Interesting way. The scoring rarely gets into positive numbers. It's been going years now, each season is based on a letter in the alphabet. So every show in that season the questions are based around that letter.

I believe the gas mask theory. Even if it wasn't directly true, it was certainly in Hitler's interest to be noted for his military service. Hair has a habit of growing, so it's possible both accounts are true. If he'd been persuaded to trim his tache in Liverpool, he might well have regrown the Kaiser back in Germany & opted for the Liverpool style again.

World War one (1914 to 1918 - not the US version 1917 - 1918) was pretty much a family feud between the great ruling houses of Europe. No one actually won or lost, technically, though millions lost their lives. Hitler fought and lived through all this in the trenches and saw the barbarity, it may even have affected him mentally. There was an armistice signed. The Treaty however put massive pressures on Germany and was completely unfair to them. This led to major upheavals in the country at a time when Europe was adjusting to the loss of the monarchy in Russia with the revolution. The great depression affected Germany far more than most other european countries, with massive inflation running at thousands of percentage points. Photos of people taking wheelbarrows full of cash, just to buy a loaf of bread. This led to a big unrest in the country and allowed the rise of the facists. Hitler was a great orator and though not originally the leader of the facists, he was soon put forward as the leader, especially when they were voted (yes they were democratically elected) into government. Hitler was made Chancellor and soon changed the rules using emergency powers, so that he and his party could not be removed. He actually turned the economy around and got the country working and building and made them into a great power. Sadly his need for the grip on power (and possibly his mental state) also led him to make the bad decisions and do the really nasty things. Blaming travellers, gipsies, homosexuals, jews and others for the previous ills of the country. Seem a little familiar? With the current situation of blame being put on migrants etc, as causing all the current problems. It is always the same, in times of crisis, find a minority to lay the blame at. - I know you don't do politics, which is mostly fine until you understand that some politic is actually about life. You as teachers, have a responsibility to your students, to educate yourselves and then your pupils on history which WILL still affect them in their futures. Do Trump and the maga-republicans look at all familiar when considering recent history of the 20th century? We have the same groups all across Europe so you are not alone. Putin, Zelensky, recent election results in other countries, all following a familiar pattern. - As Teachers, you may have some of the most important jobs with the power to affect just how good or bad the future turns out, hope you are up to it

@@Jodi_BoringReviews How on earth does my comment about your using the word 'like' rather too frequently cast aspersions upon Americans ??? It is irritating - but not necessarily a deterrent to watching your videos - which I enjoy very much ! That word has become over used here in England - and can affect one's enjoyment of the conversation etc. The reply to my initial comment is sadly a typical English response -- but NOT meant in a disparitory fashion - more of a written 'eye roll'. My comment was not intended as offensive - simply as a negative reaction to that wretchedly pointless word!

@@ebantink4843 I understand. It’s just hard when there are so many negative comments nitpicking everything done. It feels so degrading and hurtful. People can say get thicker skin, but I think if you are going to say something, have it be uplifting. You don’t know what people are going through that they don’t share. I try to imagine- if you were to have all the words you say to others show up on your body every day, what would they say and how would you feel about them? I guess I’m just more sensitive or tired of hurtful comments. And, it takes a lot to put this out there and be honest about it.

They knew about Hitler before the war, he was even imprisoned for extremism, but the Great Depression meant that the USA defaulted on post WWI aid and that caused Germany to fall into hyperinflation, at which point they didn't care who did something, so long as someone did... So a little known marginalised political party grew in power and strength with a known ex-convinct growing in power at it head. They all knew Hitler was a radical extremist but he was promising to fix their problems... When you're starving, jobless and see no hope you'll follow anyone promising a solution, especially if there's not that much detail about what it is, until their in power. Then he made sure he stayed in power. They knew at the top he was trouble and despite getting the numbers they tried to offer Hitler vice-chancellor, Hitler refused in the end President Hindenburg had to appoint him chancellor, because unlike the claims he was fascist, he didn't seize power, he was elected in fair elections, driven by a nation in turmoil. He was actually a radical left-wing socialist, not fascist - that was Mussolini (Italy) and Franco (Spain) who survived in power until 1975, so don't say WWII was fighting fascism, it wasn't! That's all modern revisionism.
