Truthfully there was no Russia at the time, just Kievan Rus (Ruthenia in Latin). Russia just named itself that later to lay claim to the whole.

This was at the time Ukraine had joined the Russians, which is one of the "arguments" for the current Russo-Ukrainian war. Putin wants to "reunite the historic Russian empire", not just that of the USSR. He was a KGB agent before becoming a politician.
