Specifically the part about having very sensitive reproductive organs dangle like that, an easy target for any would-be kickers, and use adjustable air cooling rather than the more traditional cooling method of adjusting the heat of the blood going to the organs. Or well, at least it isn't like that alien from one of the Men In Black movies, where the ballsack is located on the chin. The 98.6 °F figure is quite old. For years I thought it was an improper conversion from 37 °C--that is, the original measurement was stated precise to 1 °C, but it was then converted to 98.6 °F without correctly rounding the result. It turns out that isn't quite true. Although Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich's 1851 paper does state the average as "37 °C," this was not a rounded figure, as all other figures are given to 0.1 °C. Rather, at the time, there just wasn't the modern convention of significant figures. (Today, we would write it 37.0 °C.) Rather, Wunderlich's measurements were simply biased, being based only on military men, and his equipment may not have been perfectly calibrated. Additionally, the mean body temperature appears to have dropped slightly over the last 170 years. Today, the average for healthy adults seems to be more like 36.6 °C = 97.9 °F (according to some sources; others give values as high as 98.2 °F, so I guess even today there is no scholarly consensus). EDIT: It is not the case that Wunderlich believed armpit temperatures accurately reflected core temperature. He knew they would be lower and attempted to calibrate his thermometer so as to account for the discrepancy. He used numerous oral and rectal measurements to do so.
@millomweb3 жыл бұрын

As an RN for 40 years I can arrest that I rarely ever got a temp of 98.6 on a patient. Most ran in the 97 something range; most common seemed to be 97.6.

Since when do they use Fahrenheit in the UK?
@patrickwilliams31083 жыл бұрын
Other way around, sort of. The UK used Fahrenheit until 1962. Then they switched to Celcius.
@Marina-pe1gx3 жыл бұрын
@@patrickwilliams3108 so currently they still use Celsius that they switched to. Why are they talking in Fahrenheit in the clip?
@tomconnor77863 жыл бұрын
@@Marina-pe1gx Because people still use it colloquially, and not just people who grew up before the switch.

There is no “normal” temperature. There is a reference interval and by default 5% of normal don't fall into that interval.
@joyl78423 жыл бұрын
The fact that is completely missed is that the body is not the same temperature all over. The extremities are a lower temperature than the core of your body.
@221b-Maker-Street3 жыл бұрын
In an emergency situation, it's only the _core body temperature_ that a clinician is really interested in - that lets us know if your organs are under threat in any way, and whether you need emergency treatment, as when it's unstable, you can't maintain the integrity of your physiology. But peripheral temperature is a helpful indicator of fever or less serious infection.

I don't think it's missed. It's just that measuring that requires an invasive procedure. As I understand it you can swallow a wireless thermometer or you can have one inserted up your butt. Also I don't think your tongue qualifies as an extremity. That would be a finger or a toe.
@DJ.V-W3 жыл бұрын
It varies greatly, my normal (orally measured) body temperature is 35.5-35.8c, so if I have a temperature of 37c (generally accepted as normal) I have a fever.
@dkahl28033 жыл бұрын
That’s probably your thermometer not being calibrated properly and not your actual temperature.

Same. I generally run low.
@DJ.V-W3 жыл бұрын
@@dkahl2803 No it's not, it's genuinely my temperature, my home thermometer is not only used by me and it's been measured at the doctor's and it's still low.
