QMMG vs 292T vs Sosumi vs Centaur's Gate

Ok so after talking making the "favorite sounds of the QMMG" video I had some requests about making a shootout between it and the 292t from Tiptop Audio & Buchla.
I decided to indulge AND to add two other recent lpgs to the table with the Sosumi by Nekya Circuits, a small 4hp, knobless, dual LPG inspired by the original Buchla 292; and the Centaur's Gate by Shakmat, that does MUCH more (multi mode filters / VCA, with preset recall) than all others but does have an internal analog vactrol emulation that I wanted to check out alongside the others.

It's cool that you have the really, really old club sandwitch QMMG. It's very probably handmade by Tony. I think the 292T is gorgeous, considering it doesn't have Vactec's, it has handmade vactrols by Tiptop and Gur told me only 10% makes it into the 292T. I also asked about Buchla's involvement, and I found out they provided TTA with tons of help to make it sound like a true Buchla. If you ever get your hands on a Natural Gate, make sure you give it a listen. 292 is perfect, and a reference, but NG would make Buchla proud. Already subscribed so here's a BIG HUGE LIKE! Thanks man, I love your channel as well, very fun watching you going into Serge while I'm myself getting some more into it at the moment. Indeed the 292t is awesome, my favorite "combo" mode sound so far. I'm yet to try a Natural Gate but I admit I'm a bit put off by the look of it, and it's an important thing for me.

292t is my favourite, punchy, defined, organic, it just ticks all the boxes of what I think an LPG should sound like. I also have a Sosumi and I like it because it sounds unlike the 292t and does not cost the ridiculous QMMG money and I think Sosumi sounds a lot like the QMMG...but a bit better...so that covers my QMMG FOMO. 292t is the one though by miles and I love mine!

What would would it take to get some of the cool patches you were doing with the QMMG in the last video with the Buchla module?

A bipolar mixer with amplification will make it possible to make the 292t resonate (basically patching a similar feedback path than the QMMG). I’ll have a go at this with Aranea from Ritual and make a video if I come up with cool stuff ;-)

Sosumi sounds incredible in the blind test definitely closest to Qmmg! Are both channels the same? Thanks for the comparison :)

not sure if this is worth it or not (or if you still have it patched up) but maybe if you could release a short recording of just the raw Verbos VCO output that you used here? then people could load it into Morphagene or whatever and compare whatever LPGs they have...

Found a new appreciation for non-organic sounds from vactrol LPGs - that Nekyia’s brightness and a touch of clang is quite unique driven hotter than 5v expected…. Might not always want that side effect of the click with faster rolls on it, but if you’re using a metallic lpg in a track some click might even be an enhancer for harder genres like IDM or industrial ….. just my pot thoughts while elden ring is paused for this 🗡 🤴 🛡

Bon alors;on fait quoi demain ? On prends le dernier qmmg de la planète pour faire des bongs di bongo à gogo ou alors pour plus de saveurs, de canaux et moins de hp et de sous sous, on prend un 292t ET un sosumi ? (Je parle en français pour pas éveiller les soupçons anglo saxon au cas où je me déciderais cette nuit à 0:001) Je précise que je ne suis pas un make noise addict (même si j’ai maths, qpas, optomix et mimeophon) J’ai quand même une dent contre MN car mon mimeophone c’est quand même une horreur de souffle en dry et en wet, j’aime bien le noise MAIS quand je le décide!)

That is indeed one of thing that make the 292e from Buchla very appealing. But I very often patch one channel into another, one with the velocity / strength control and the other with the envelope.

Also QMMG and Centaur’s Gate can make use of the VC Feedback to achieve dynamic accents. Not exactly velocity but very useful still.
