QnA with Dr. Aditya Mishra from MIT || Answering your questions related to BS-MS from IISERs

Hello everyone! Since IISER applications are due soon and since many of you had questions related to BS-MS from IISERs, I invited Aditya who did his BS-MS from IISER Mohali to answer some of your questions. He is currently a postdoc at MIT.

didi I have some questions first one is that I am from a very lower middle class family ...... and mene bohot bohot jaga suna hai ki agar family ka financial condition achaa na hua to research field me nahi jana chahiye ...... abb kya karu didi ? please help ......... and the second one is ki kya iiser , niser and iisc ke bachoo ko hamesha hi fully funded phd milta hai ? and third one is ki kya phd ke stipend jo bhi milega kya usko save karke ghar me bhej sakte hai ..... I mean kya stipend ke paise save kar sakte hai ya sare kharche ho jate hai ? please didi reply and help me ........... I am very confused ..........

Research is time taking so time and money are some factors that should be kept in mind. But agar strong will hai ki krna hi hai research against all odds tabhi aana chaiye is field me. Mostly PIs always fund your PhD or provide stipend. Fellowship ya to institute se milegi ya csir, dbt se. But tuition fees dena padta hai stipend me se which is different for different institutes Paise save krke ghar pe bhej skte ho especially if u r single and don't have a spouse and kids. But I would suggest trying to get your own fellowship and applying to an institute where the tuition fee is not very high or check if it can be waived based on your financial or caste status.

When we go abroad to study phd we have to pay for our own hostel tickets fee or what please let us know .Am really confused

As a postdoc I got relocation assistance(flight tickets) to come to the US, not sure if the PhDs get this. But hostel rent needs to be paid from the stipend that you get.

In PhD you get a stipend and in most places there is no additional fee except your hostel or apartment rent. At least in MIT that's the case but in some other places there is some tuition fee. Depends on the institute

Yes, he got a fully funded PhD position..usually the PI supports you and funds your PhD

Hi, if the goal is to become a researcher, IISER provides a really good environment because you will get a lot of opportunities to work in the labs during summers. So you will get more exposure to research in your undergrad

After a PhD in MIT or in India one can easily become a lecturer in a university. Pay scale depends on whether it is a gov or private institute and on the years of experience. From my lab at MIT, many people have also gone for data scientist positions, r&d in pharma, consultancies and of course postdoc is also an option

Mene negotiate kia tha ki mujhe flight tickets chaiye to mujhe wo mila tha..use relocation assistance bolte hain, baki stipend is between 40 to 60k dollars for phds and postdocs once you come here

People go into all kinds of fields after bs ms from IISER Mohali. There are no campus placements per se but there is an opportunity cell that advertises positions. Phd in India is definitely possible and everyone gets a stipend. I did my phd in India and many bs ms students from IISERs also do their Phds in India

My qs to him is. Will there be a lot of advanced math involved in bs ms or phd of physics? Can a person who is not that much of interested in math can survive in persuing physics. And my dream is to do phd in astronomy or astrophysics in mit or iv leagues after iiser. Can i do phd in astrophysics after ms in physics in iiser ? If Can, can u say how can i do that ?

Patience he toh easy hoga. Mereko bhi astrophysics karna he. Mene thoda boht dekha he yt se aur Google se. So isiliye bol ra hun ki perfect calculation aur clear concept hone chahiye

Salary depends on the kind of job one is doing after PhD. People who have specific degrees like Physics, computer science etc can apply..I don't think Phds in biological sciences can apply

In IISERs there is a bs ms dual degree program..I am assuming there will be a similar program in IISC, here people go for mba, phd, upsc preparation and sometimes directly for a job in coaching institutes. Depends on whether you are interested in research or a corporate job or teaching

Tech karne ka soch raha hu aur agar nahi aayi to IAT se BS kar lu soch raha Kyuki kuch to baat hogi tabhi to 2022 ka advance topper R. K. Shishir IIT BOMBAY ka neglect kar ke IISC BANGLORE choose kiya aur maine suna hai ki starting ke 2 years sabhi ug students same subjects padhte hai

Sis i have two options, first to join btech in fire engineering in NFSC Nagpur ( avg package 8-10 lakh) and the second to join iiser bs ms Which is better to join and where is better job opportunity I am belonging to lower class family ( approx 10-12k per month is my family income)

Hi, if money is the main criteria then I think in research the chances are 50-50. You might end up in a good position but that will take time depending on your research field. I don't know much about NFSC Nagpur

You will apply for PhD yourself..IISER does not play any role in this after bs ms. So you can apply to a foreign university based on your toefl or gre score and most of them have their own applications

Boston is expensive..so yahan half of the monthly salary goes in paying the rent..so I would say half of the salary can be saved per month if spent judiciously

Sometimes the PI with whom you are doing your PhD pays the tuition fee and sometimes you have to pay it from your stipend. Depends on the institute
