I'm wondering if the ironwolf pro 20 TB drive version is compatible with my QNAP TS-453D NAS. I'm looking to upgrade my drives and 20 TB drives full popluated would be a plenty of data space.

Hi Lord, unfortunately, officially, it is not supported by QNAP yet.

I can confirm that both 18 TB and 20 TB pro drives have exactly same dimensions and thickness. According to qnap official website the 18 TB drive, currently is compatible but it is not supported by Seagate IronWolf Health Management in the current QTS version. Qnap website says that support will be added for this drive in the future releases (4.5.2). Any good reason not to get the latest 20 TB version for my QNAP TS-453 NAS? Qnap email service support would be useless at this time, I know for sure, they didn't test the 20 TB drives for my NAS, but they will do it in the future... I'm not quite sure why drive tests takes so much time, particularly for the top hard drive manufacturers.

Thanks Lord - that's a great update. The only reason would be price - whether or not it is financially viable, otherwise, if you require the storage then an extra 2TB can never hurt.

Do you edit 4k video straight from the NAS or do you only use it for storage/archival purposes?

Hi Our Voices. Our Lives. That's a great question. There's a bit of a catch-22 here and here's how we will break this down: 1. If you do direct to NAS, it is recommended that your NAS has SSD drives + the 10Gbps SFP+ network card that connects to a 10Gbps SFP+ network switch. Naturally, if your computer is also connected to a 10Gbps SFP+ connection, then this would be the most optimal situation to be in; however 2. If you use regular hard disks (such as the WD RED drives that has 5400 RPM on a regular 1 Gbps network) you may experience delays. This also depends on how much traffic is going through your network at that given point in time. You can definitely try, but we would not recommend it. In short, for us, we would do the editing and rendering on a PC then move it onto the NAS For archive/storage. Hopefully one day, we'll be able to upgrade our network and do direct editing from there. Hope that helps!

@@XKUBECONNECTS Yeah, I edit using a 2013 Mac Pro (trash can/cylinder) so maybe I’ll get a NAS for archive purposes instead of the slew of hard drives I have now

@@OurVoicesOurLives That's where NAS is very useful/helpful! Plus you can plug in a 4TB or whichever size USB drive into the NAS to do further backups of the NAS.

Can you do a tutorial to show us step by step on how to set it up? I wanna get a NAS but it’s intimidating.

Thanks for the suggestion, definitely will take into consideration if we have sometime we can try to make one. What did you plan on using the NAS for?

MSRP $550 for 4GB model

$550 USD is a really good price, unfortunately, Canadians have to pay a little more between $700-$800 CAD.
