is the TVS-h1688X still worth buying or would you recommend another device given this review is 2 years old

My question is related to SSD caching. Are you able to add four SSDs under RAID1 within the four front bays that is used only for SSD caching of the 12 bay storage pool, or is SSD caching only supported with the SSD expansion cards?

Can you add a Quadro video card into this for transcoding?

is this NAS fast enough to stream multiple 4k videos on my home devices??

Would you recommend this for 4k remote editing and thunderbolt local editing? As well as future proof for 8k file handling?

it's worth every penny. I just bought one. WOW, just WOW, it is a monster. If you can afford one, just buy one won't regret it

Planning to use this one for video editing in Davinci Resolve. Would LTO be a good backup and archive device? Thinking about LTO write new files from the QNAP until tape is full and put in a new tape. Is this a way to use it?

I wonder if replacing the fans with Noctua units would help with the noise. Maybe stick some sound absorbing foam on the inside of that top piece of metal (like the Fractal Design Define series of PC cases).

if you get demonetized its because when you say NAS sometimes the automatic subtitles hear n-a-z-i-s , great video dude .

I was looking at this as a plex server, phone/desktop/laptop backup. Its between this, the TS-1655 and the TVS-H874x. I dont want to sound snooty, but money isnt an object. What would be the absolute best option?
@BudSimpson-ik2zd18 күн бұрын
I just got one, populated it with 24TB drives, a couple of m.2 ssd's and a 8TB 2.5" SSD. I did get the thunderbolt card and have a Mac Studio running the plex server and the NAS for storage. I am running pfSense (firewall) and Snort (Intrusion Detection) on the NAS itself. It's fantastic.

THIS or the Synology DS3622XS?

Nice video! I really want one of these, but my budget could only afford the TS-h886. Even that's overkill for what I need... Eventually I'll have to think about backups, which means maybe the TVS-h1288x will be purchased in the future, using the TS-h886 as the backup NAS (and maybe load some surveillance drives in there for a surveillance storage pool/volume). Or I could go cheaper and get a more basic, weaker processor NAS for basic backup storage. Not sure what I'm going to do (I have both stage 4 cancer and way too much money) yet. Buying WD Red Pros and Samsung M.2 drives for this thing alone cost a LOT. Use cases? Plex. Also, VM and ISO and whatever else storage, Apple Time Machine backups, and anything anyone else in the house wants to back up (tax documents, etc.)

Is the xeon able to do hardware transcoding. How many 1080p or 720p streams can be done on that cpu?
@nascompares3 жыл бұрын
Only on the W series Intel Xeons and even then, only the GPU equipped ones. We did some pretty good Plex tests with transcoding on the TVS-H1288X and the official @QNAPUK KZbin channel did some great stuff with huge numbers fo plex transcoding on this system (better than mine tbh) here in their vid - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5aze5WerstsrZI The QNAP UK YT channel is here - kzbin.info/door/m0fS3sWrjZPpTFBnx14z9A

Monster NAS

all the money spend on this and the following mistakes were made. 1. The Power Supply Should have been External with it's own culling system with air Filters , this would have cut down on the heat and let the fans last longer 2. filters on the venting should have also been put in place again cut's down on dust buildup and let the fans last longer the filters would also cut down on sound this unit needs to be inside a box with it's own fans and filters to keep it from burning out and have a longer life expectancy ok so they keep the power supply in the unit but rile no filters for air intake or air out not very smart also a peltier cooling chip with it's cooling would also help keep things from over heating other than that they got it right like apple made the same mistake about putting the power supply in the case people should know by now , power supply should be separate from the system.

Good day! I need an expert opinion! We have a small film production. We have an office and 4 Mac Studio in it. We want to install a NAS in the studio so that we can edit from it IN PARALLEL on all 4 computers, accessing the same volumes/files from several editing stations at the same time. We plan to make a local 10G network. I want to buy QNAP TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G for this purpose. But some sellers in stores assure me that this is an amateur level device and it will not allow mounting simultaneously from several mounting stations, and advise me to buy QSAN XCubeNAS XN8012R which in my opinion will not justify its money because it has weaker characteristics (we also do not have a server rack now). What do you advise in this case? I want to find the best solution for my money and not let my fellow editors down so that they don't suffer from bugs later.

I’m basically in the same boat with you. We have 6 editors now but growing. I’ve decided to go for this. Going to max out it’s RAM to 128. Adding two more duel 10gbe cards + 10gb switch. 16TB drives and 4, 4TB SSDs for cache. We have a jellyfish now but don’t want to go down that road anymore due to cost. I’ll have this up and running in the next week or two. Couldn’t find any reviews using a NAS like this at the scale you or I are doing other than one that had three editors working off a QNAP that wasn’t as beefy as this one and after 6 months didn’t really have anything bad to say about it. If you want me to keep you updated on if this works well let me know.

@@illia.yehorov I have an update. I didn’t end up going with the h1688x. I was able to find an expert that sets up QNAPs for mayor video production houses. He said that the h1688x is a great device but you won’t be able to get more than 6 editors at the same time so it would work for your case with 4. But if you think you’re going to grow beyond 6 in the next few years a rack mount is better (what I went with) and there’s a simple reason why; the number of spinning drives is all that matters in video editing. DO NOT fall for Qtier or caching. If you go with the h1688x fill it up with SATA drives, I went with Seagate EXOS X18 in RAID 6, two Ironwolf 125 in RAID 1 for system, QuTS Hero. For 4 editors I would get another 10gbe card so everyone has a direct connection. You could have up to 6 direct connections going that route with two cards and it would be cheaper or as much as buying one of QNAPs 10gb switches.

I've got two of these at work and the thermal design is horrible. What's the point of three fans when the front lids of the hard drive bays have almost zero air intake? Even comparatively cold-running helium filled disks sit at almost 50 degrees C while idle when in 'smart fan' setting. Those 3 fans are also smaller than the two fans in the older TVS-EC1080 and TS-1079, which also have very nice air intakes in front of the drives. The trays holding the drives are entirely made of very flimsy plastics, compared to the nice metal ones of the old types. If that wasn't enough, one of the two units was defective on delivery, with the 2 leftmost drive bays not powering up at all, and the others running but without detecting the drives. After 10 years of QNAP devices, these may be the last.
