@Watercolor & Co with Elisabetta Che bella posizione del negozio!

Ehi! Non abbiamo visto Totò 😢 I like the Sap Green and the Transparent Brown Oxide in this set. I use QoR wet-in-wet for fun, because I like the way they spread in all directions as soon as I put them on the paper, and it's fun to watch them move; but because of this, I find it difficult to control them when I don't use the wet-on-dry; I can't predict where they will fly off to. That said, I might try the Sap Green and the Transparent Brown Oxide for Fall leaves on wet paper; I'll let the paints flow where they want, and then add some yellow, orange and fiery red around them, once the QoR paints have dried. The Naples Yellow might be useful for sand, but I would have like to see a Quinacridone Gold hue in the set. It would have been more useful to me. Then again, I see the use of this Yellow Ochre for stone houses, fields with dried straw, dirt roads, and probably many more things which I can't think of right now. Vogliamo vedere Totòòòòòòòòòòòò! Non il de Curtis o il Cutugno. 😉

QOR needs to be treated with caution. The synthetic binder does provide a brightening effect for now, but until they have been around for a hundred years no one can be certain how that binder will stand up to that sort of time. Accelerated aging tests have their limitations as the individual atmospheres that individual paintings will experience during their lifetime vary greatly. It is not unkown for synthetic compounds to go milky or gain yellowish colors with great time. There is also the matter of environmental impact. Gum Arabic is a natural product, harvested from naturally growing trees in Africa and the Arabian penisula, with a very small impact on the environment. The synthetic binder on the other hand can only be produced in a large factory in a city using chemicals which also come from other factories, each with their own problems of environmental impacts from pollution to energy usage resulting in a much greater environmental impact than gum Arabic. I do not know why artists have not yet considered the environmental impact of introducing a synthetic binder into watercolor formulas, but perhaps they should start thinking about it, and not just look at the pretty colors. The manufacturer will not bring this up in the hope that no one thinks of it, but it is a real issue, and needs some thought. It is bad enough that so many of the truly lightfast pigments are the products of polluting factories, but we have no choice but to use them if we want our artworks to not fade and to use more than just earth colors, but we do have a choice about what binders we use. This QOR binder may stay perfectly clear in the long term, but no one really knows, plus I am concerned to minimize my environmental footprint. As a result, while I do have one QOR tube, I am reluctant to get more because of that synthetic binder.
@WatercolorElisabetta2 жыл бұрын
Dear @artistjoh, actually I have never thought about environmental impact of paint, I admit. I always considered art such a niche activity that the potential impact on environment seemed to me to be negligible. From what I understand aquazol primary use is in renovation of antique paintings (I apologise if my English is imperfect). Also, extraction, transportation and treatment of Gum Arabic can’t have a zero impact on environment. In other words, it’s a complicated issue…Maybe I should stop eating meat (which unfortunately I find delicious) and buy some more QOR tubes. At the end of the day, I can survive without QOR. I will think it twice before I buy more…although it’s such beautiful paint…or maybe every time I buy a QOR tube I will skip meat for a week! I thank you for your comment which is very valuable food for thought but on the other hand I’m a bit sad about it… About lightfastness: I think it’s a very important information, however I mostly paint in a sketchbook so it’s not a real issue at personal level. I also sometimes sell my art but I doubt it is meant to last for generations 😟. Having said this, I only use colours which are very lightfast from reliable brands like Winsor and Newton for my commissions, and especially after what you said, I would not use paints that are not 100% certified! Thanks a lot for taking your time to comment!! Always interesting. Cheers from Italy, Elisabetta

@@WatercolorElisabetta I always enjoy interacting with you Elisabetta. I think that if we lived in the same city we would become good friends. Environmental ethics are as you say, complex. On the one hand Titanium White is regarded as being so safe that it is used as a food coloring, so it can't possibly cause environmental damage because it is not toxic right? Well, much of the world's rutile comes from here in Australia. Rutile is the raw material from which Titanium Dioxide is produced. it is extracted from rutile sands, and beaches in Queensland and Western Australia are very high in this titanium rutile. They mine the beaches and the sand dunes as they move up a beach, and I have witnessed how it takes ten to twenty years for that beach to return to its natural state. So Titanium White ends up as non-toxic and can be disposed of without problems, but starts life by devastating beaches. So what is the alternative? Lead White, traditionally called Cremnitz White or Flake White. That is so toxic that it can poison the workers making it, and can never be disposed of safely. So compared to Titanium White it is environmentally much worse, and we must accept that while not entirely free from environmental impacts, Titanium White is the best choice we can make. Everything we do has an impact. It seems to me that we must accept that, but we can minimize our impact by at least choosing the things with lesser impact where we can. As to lightfastness, I think that we should apply the standards we apply when buying a car. We expect a manufacturer to use durable materials, and if there is a defect, we expect the manufacturer to replace it. If a painting it being sold, we as artists are manufacturers of the paintings. The customer should be able to expect we use durable materials, and durability includes not fading. And it is my experience that we can never predict what people might want to buy, and sometimes they like our most humble sketches, so I just make a habit of only using lightfast materials for everything. And as to meat, it is too yummy not to eat it :)
