"Self-Confidence comes from previous social experience" I couldn't agree more
@EH0123 жыл бұрын
I like this channel, and I find it incredibly pragmatic and practical. It's true that physical attractiveness impacts social experience, and confidence is impacted by that. However, BASIC self-esteem is something that exists on a mental level, even apart from physical appearance. Attractive people can and do have terrible self-esteem. Especially women, who are conditioned to behave in ways that actively sabotage a healthy sense of self. Mistaking lack of self-esteem for a lack of superficial confidence is an iffy thing to do, and can lead to overlooking more pressing mental health issues. I don't believe this channel does that, but it's a thin line. Oversimplifying positive social experiences to being perceived as attractive is a yellow flag to me.

I think maybe you don’t realise that probably quite a lot of people on Reddit are the type of people that need to be told the basics like teeth brushing. Maybe because they weren’t taught or suffer from depression. Also there’s a bit of a stigma there that many users have trouble socializing etc. so this advice while it may seem kind of unproductive, might apply to some people. ( I use Reddit myself. That's fair, still, like you said, there is probably a majority on there that really could use more than that kind of advice, and ultimately the idea of giving any advice at all is to help everyone improve, meaning ideally at least some people reading that post should eventually get to that point where they themselves need to progress to doing more than just brushing their teeth in order to be as attractive as they'd like, so the fact that nobody's willing to go there has to seem a little self serving or otherwise suspicious.

If you struggle to make conversation, ASK QUESTIONS!! Everybody likes to talk about themselves... if you are giving them a positive, interested response. Do NOT make up stories about yourself and your life, unless you never see that person again, your story will at some point be exposed as a lie. Even if the person never calls you out on it, it WILL happen. And then you will look like a liar. Which breaks trust and makes people lose respect for you. Ask questions, really listen. When something comes up that you relate to, then share your perspective or experience. The more you practice this, the easier it will be to do. Also, don't try to 'one-up' people. If someone tells you they went mountain climbing, listen and show interest, ask them a question, be impressed at their efforts. Don't respond by dismissing their story by besting them with the story of when you climbed a bigger mountain in a shorter amount of time. Wait until their story is finished, then tell them you also climb mountains, and wait for them to ask you to elaborate. That way you don't come across as an arrogant d1ck who is so insecure they need to best everyone. It doesn't make anyone like you. People like people who make them feel good about themselves. However, do not be afraid to talk yourself up when the opportunity arises. No one is gonna know how great you are if you don't tell them about your accomplishments, your talents, your experiences, etc. Remember, it's better to SHOW not TELL. Tell people about something you did, but don't try and tell people how they should perceive you. You can't control that, and if you try, you come across as insecure. Show them who you are, and let them draw their own conclusions. Desperation is the worst cologne. Don't try and control how people perceive you. You know your talents, you know how special you are. Show that, and the people who appreciate those things will keep coming back.
@charlicks88083 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I had to add this... People who are shy or under confident often have the perception that everyone else has it all figured out. That everyone else belongs, but they don't. The people you perceive as beautiful, successful, confident... those people are either feeling EXACTLY like you, but are 'faking it' (as mentioned in the video), or they have felt exactly like you in the past. Social success is a matter of practice, but also finding the right kind of people you want to spend your time on. If you are an intellectual who likes to talk about quantum mechanics or literature, then don't waste your time with people who want to talk about reality television and idle gossip (no judgement if that's your jam). If you are passionate about fashion and art, don't waste your time with people who only want to talk and engage in sports. This is a crass illustration, but I hope the point translates. You don't have to fit into a mould that isn't right for you. But it is possible to find a point of common ground with every person you meet. And remember, never presume you know who a person is or what they are about until you have put in the time to get to know them. Remember EVERYONE will always surprise you in some way. Everyone you meet has something special about them. Everyone has flaws and weaknesses. Everyone has something to teach you and something to learn from you.

Research shows that attractive people don’t worry any less about their appearance, sometimes quite the opposite. I’m not saying the halo effect isn’t real and that increasing your visual attractiveness can’t pay off (for instance in the workplace, dating etc). BUT; it’s important for most people to deal with their deepest fears, anxieties and obsessions first, before undergoing any treatment or making drastical changes to their body and life. Otherwise, this risks making existing body dismorphia or an obsession with looks much much worse, or in some people, it can even lead to them developing new insecurities about their looks, when previously they were pretty confident all things considered. Also, as you say, there is a certain volatility and uncontrollableness to physical looks. Even if you eat the best diet and take care of your skin, you could still look puffy and bloated on one day or develop rashes/pimples etc. Obsessing about how you look in all situations 24/7 is not going to help and it’s bad for your mental health. Also, and we tend to forget this, good looks fade eventually. Therefore, it seems much better to me for people to build their self-worth based on becoming comfortable in their skin, being kind to themselves and others and by doing something they love, which preferably is also a contribution to society. An obsession (rather than appreciation) of looks doesn’t enter in to it.

It was really like seeing myself for the first time because I knew it was how i was meant to look. Acne is truly a condition where you have the power to change it or get rid of it ( not all the time though unfortunately genetics are a big factor). And ever since I’ve gotten rid of it, I could focus on my hair and clothes and overall general style. I just look better. Back when I was an insecure and lonely person, I befriended someone who would give me advice on how to improve my looks. However, while at first the advice was about makeup, clothing, hair, stuff that was actually useful, it pretty quickly changed to her pressuring me to get cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery done. I was none the wiser, still insecure about my looks, and spent probably close to 10 grand on the procedures she 'planned' for me before I realized her further advice is not gonna be a key to anything. The moment I got her out of my life was actually one of the most confidence-boosting moments of my life. Still, I choose to be grateful for the more helpful advice she gave me, but no, I'm not going to fix my minor facial bone asymmetries or my harmless pectus excavatum so I would look like a mathematically average human.

This man explains in another one of his videos about how attractiveness is all but one of the MANY ways someone can contribute to society. We all feel but hurt when we are told that we are unattractive because it feels as though it is a jab at our usefulness to society. While that is not in fact the case, having beauty standards will always hold true as it is part of human psychology and physiology. That outward attractive matters much more than people admit, and that changes the way people react and act towards you. And many people will never understand how it feels like to be attractive so they downplay how important it is. It's when potential mates find you attractive and actively seek you out, without you needing to put in much effort, or even mistreat them, and yet they persist. If you aren't born attractive, then there will be hard work to start, but most importantly the next thing - and that's upkeep, which can be expensive.

I think for hobbies, it depends on the deeper significance of that hobby to the person. Like when I talk about how I’m a huge Pokémon fan, I explain how it gave me something to hang on to when I felt very alone, and how I now use that hobby to try to help young people who might be going through the same thing, especially young women who are largely underrepresented in the gaming community. If somebody likes rock climbing just because it makes them buff or something, that’s not very interesting.
@thirstwithoutborders9953 жыл бұрын
Came here to say this. Talk about the why of your hobby, and it can spark a conversation and a connection. Then it doesn't much matter what the hobby is. I, for example would be turned off by someone who likes rock climbing, because I am not outdoorsy. Especially if they have nothing to tell me about it, except that this is their hobby. Then you might as well say you like to stick plastic blocks together, at least I would have shared that experience as a kid and get a conversation going.

I know you said women’s clothing isn’t your strong point, but I just wanted to throw out there that your advice for short women in this video (and also the previous video where you’d mentioned it) is sort of confusing and contradictory. You say to not wear form fitting clothing but also to not wear loose clothing, so I guess we should wear something in between? But it’s unclear what exactly that would be, and honestly in my experience things that are sort of loose sort of form fitting tend to be unflattering on short women- it often needs to be one extreme or the other, and then you can play off of the opposite end in the silhouette. If anything I think it’s really important for myself (and most other short women I know) to have some amount of waist definition or else some part of the clothing that is form fitting, otherwise the clothing swallows us and we look dumpy.
@e.starling1413 жыл бұрын
I agree about wearing something with shape that isnt too large. I also thinking making sure sleeves and pant legs are tailored to length help a lot. Also wearing one color head to toe really stream lines and gives the illusion of length. I've also alwats thought jeans or pants with a boot cut or straight leg that are wide enough to wear over tall heels or tall boots to almost reach the floor really elongate the legs. But unfortunately that stype doesnt seen to be around anymore. Whats trendy in pant or jeans length is (in my opinion) very unflattering to just about anyones legs. Having jeans cut at the ankle or above only shortens the leg.

I love systems, so I checked out the kibbe one, I think it's kinda true in some ways, cause part of it it's based on body geometry, also the taking on the proportions it's great, the only problem that I found it's that encourages cliche images and personalities, I hate the names too, for example, a dramatic type woman who probably wants to look soft and approachable will find it difficult because the system encourages just to follow your already determined features instead of "fixing" them, the point is that not all the types are equally attractive, yes you can find people who can be as beautiful as others, but the point should be to look as proportionate as possible.
@shirin94523 жыл бұрын
@@An-kw3ec I think it’s important to note that you can go against the rules once you have them down. Like I love when a dramatic woman wears a flowery frilly gown, maybe in a column style to go with her vertical line. Makes her look so otherworldly. And Reese’s romantic/tr looks in Legally Blonde are so hyper feminine for her gamine countenance that it’s really striking. I follow my TR rules but I’m very fashion forward, so when I’m trying a weird silhouette or loud print I make sure you can still see waist definition ^^

to be honest, i think hair plays a big part in someone's appearance, that's why taking good care of your hair, using good products with good ingredients, trying to figure out what hairstyles suit your facial structure, is very important. another thing is mewing, you did touch upon that in this video, but yes, correct mewing is very important i did realize a difference in my appearance after i did some research into that topic and implemented it into my life. getting a tan could make you look more tone, so if that's what you are looking for then you could try that. i personally have fair skin but it goes well with the rest of my features so i dont think im gonna go out of my way to tan. if you have a big nose, dont get a piercing on it. piercings are going to bring attention to your nose, and if you dont want that then dont get a piercing, same with using highlighter on your nose, if u dont want to bring attention to it then dont highlight it. ALSO, eyebrows, EYEBROWS ARE SO IMPORTANT. so shape them to suit your features.

Guys, don't wear pleated pants. Even if you're lean like me, they flare out at the waist, which give you a feminine-looking figure from the waist down. You want a V shape, not an hourglass shape. Throw that crap away... unless you're competing with me for the same girl. In that case, you should definitely wear them all of the time. : ) Another tip for lean guys is to wear European cut rather than American cut shirts, which includes soccer shirts, and dress shirts that are marked "fitted". If you're in small town USA, you'll need to visit stores in larger towns for these, incl. soccer shops, H&M, Express, and American Eagle. Don't wear baggy stuff to look less skinny. Umm, excuse me? If someone tells me staying home and watching Netflix while eating ice cream is their hobby, then I am very much interested and I know I'm not the only one. Personally I think geeky hobbies aren't anything to not share with others. It seems close-minded to say you can't be attractive because of confidence in your needy interests.
@shirin94523 жыл бұрын
I think it’s totally cool to be into that, who isn’t? But it would also be good to have 1-2 other things you would be able to say, like playing an instrument or something. Still, I haven’t gotten to that part of the video so maybe I’ll think differently when I hear it.

"Are you really going to tell someone your hobby is staying in, watching netflix for 7 hours and eating ice-cream?" - Oh yeah, I can tell you from experience that you can definitely get away with that if you're attractive, and preferably have a high-earning career. Attractive people tend to feel intimidating and are subconsciously perceived as arrogant and unapproachable, so admitting to weird or geeky hobbies can work to their advantage by making them more relatable.

I have to disagree with your stance on confidence. When people are able to lead conversations and put themselves forward in spite of whatever physical imperfections they may have that from my perspective is undeniable attractive. Confidence doesn’t always need to be linked with attractiveness. Take industry leaders for example, or management in the corporate world. There is a certain magnetism that comes from power and leadership.
@Wangriceman3 жыл бұрын
@Tony Montana Untrue - people respectfully exude confidence when they are good at what they do and excel in their domain. I'm going to give you specific examples here - politicians - Boris Johnson looks like a knob but is he not confident? Of course he is confident, he's a great public speaker and had the skills to get elected. Athletes, politicians, scientists - people from all walks of life are confident without their attractiveness necessarily coming into the picture.

Commenting twice because while this channel is generally good - the section at 21:10 about confidence and 'This doublethink around what you tell yourself and your lived experience' is absolutely BS. Humans are absolutely *terrible* at self assessment and there is use in confidence. Your 'Lived experience' might tell you that "If you're bald you're less attractive" but only if you're ignoring the millions of men who are Bald that are; married, have children, lead successful, fulfilling lives. Etc. This is true for whatever 'problem' with attractiveness you want to address. What the 'confidence' argument is getting at is the nice way of saying, 'get over yourself'. What isn't attractive in, to keep with my example, a balding man - is when they go on and on about how they are losing their hair while they are surrounded by friends who love them. Its one thing to acknowledge that you're balding, and even have some emotions surrounding it - actually its encouraged to be honest and open - but don't let that be your whole personality and/or get in the way of human connections.

I have to say your frustration is very entertaining 😂 No but seriously, I guess the advice on these threads is very general and easy/cheap/simple to do because you're writing generally, these are advice that everyone will benefit from and can do without having to pay a bunch of money or spend tons of time and effort to do. You can't just go through all possible "problems" that can be fixed through surgery or whatever and say "if this is your problem, do this, if this is your problem, do this, etc.). And a lot of people actually don't keep up with hygene, health and basic grooming, simply because they feel like they'll be alright without it.They don't prioritize hygene and health. Without realising the importance it also has on their image and in turn their chances at finding a partner. Some people are just dumb like that 😅 Advice like these serve as a reminder for those that care about finding a partner more that about hygene and health.

I mean, yes, their advice is superficial, but yours kinda is too. You say I need a glow up first and confidence comes later... Well, then, how do I glow up? Surgery? You only added to their comments of changing your style and fixing your teeth, but how do I change my ugly face? Maybe you didn't want to go into detail in this specific video, but I think it would be useful
@RedApple333333 жыл бұрын
It's superficial from the start and very much based on stupid "universal" standarts that the more you know about them the more you understand that it's all a facade designed to sell (surgeries, etc) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Despite that right when he started the vid he was like: short bodies aren't attractive. He stated it like a fact which I didn't like. Then he continued on how to make this "ugliness" kinda better using clothes. Why do short bodies have to considered ugly in the first place? 🤔 followed by yellow teeth and bla bla bla Most of the times these things are genetical. As for the hygiene part it's smth ppl ought to be taught in early childhood. The thing is: be confident first and you'll see beauty in yourself later. No need to change anything and give more money to surgeons etc etc. Tired of people selling the button nose, big lips, perfect teeth and face. Our features make us unique. No need to fit in a "universal" standart.
@AkiraScrolls3 жыл бұрын
Do you have a discord? What’s your gender? I went through a very consistent glow up from childhood to early twenties. It’s hard for him to express the minute details and lifestyle changes that one has to personally go through for this to be sustainable for one person specifically. If you want we can talk about it! I’m very into this topic. And I assure you my glow up had nothing to do with puberty, it was a very strenuous routine that I implemented in my life. Other than that his advice is legit and straightforward, want a better face? Lose weight, better body? Workout (lift weights and do low intensity cardio), sunscreen everyday and tretnoin for age spots or melasma, FIX YOUR POSTURE, learn to do makeup for your specific failos in your face, long hair if you’re a woman and CLEAN hair (better if it’s straight hair that reaches your mid back), always show off your figure even if you’re fat. There’s no reason why you should be ugly ugly, I truly believe everyone can be at the very least decent, how sustainable it is depends on your time and need for it. If you want it you’ll get there

People that obsess over their looks tend to be the least confident people I know, so in a way everything discussed on this channel actively works against building true confidence. Obsessing over your appearance manifests itself in trying to always appear beautiful which leads to constantly caring about what others think, which is the closest thing to an antonym of true confidence.

I love your constant drive for excellence in your videos. You always go into detail which is very essential especially in this aspect. I really appreciate that you always tackle the causes and effects of things rather than just settling on what's on the table, only few channels do what you do and I'm glad that I discovered this channel. Also, I love the way you go into-depth in a clear and concise manner without using excess words unlike others who keep on rambling when they could've stated it in a short manner but still get their point across. Hoping that more people will notice your channel. I guess what resonated a lot to me in this video is when you said, "self confidence comes from social experiences and if you have positive social experiences, you get more confidence but those positive social experiences are more often than not correlated with your physical attractiveness." As a guy who's short, bullied and rejected a lot, I hate it when people ignore the fact that looks do matter in our society. I appreciate it when people are real.

There's a difference between being attractive (not available to everyone) and doing the best with what you got (everyone can do this). That's where you get the comments about moisturising, sunscreen, changing your hairstyle/color, changing your eyebrows, working on your posture, losing weight... Because those are things you can actually work on yourself. And they absolutely make a difference, but truth is, for most of us TRUE attractiveness is only available through surgery.

Just fyi, the "wider silhouette for shorter people" thing directly contradicts the advice of basically every professional stylist ever. Wider silhouettes make you look shorter. In my opinion, the older man looks "frail" because his coat isn't tailored, and his jeans are cuffed about an inch too high. The slightly loose shapeless coat makes him look thin, and the too short jeans make him look short.
