One tip that I'd give is just start speaking. I'm an intermediate student and I'm sure the people who have heard me speak regretted it later but once you get into a conversation the words just come out. You may have wrong conjugations or use wrong words but as long as your point gets across it's a conversations and it's a great way to grow
@DoTheFloppАй бұрын

@clath2823Ай бұрын
What would that sound like in English? Is there any type of an example of how using wrong conjugations would seem to an English speaker? I’ve always wondered how broken my Spanish will sound if I say screw it and start to use all verbs.
@samstromberg5593Ай бұрын
@@clath2823 TL;DR: Specifically with bad conjugations, you'll still usually be understood, especially if you use redundant pronouns, and even if you're not you'll just be asked to clarify Yeah so the best example I can think of in English is (we actually do have conjugations, they're just a lot less common so people often don't realize it) "he goed" or "you is" and both of those are still absolutely understandable. They make you look uneducated if you use them while the rest of your speech seems fluent but if you're obviously a Spanish learner they'll cut you a lot of slack, at least in my experience I once had a Spanish lady stop me on the street and ask me if I spoke, and I told her a little, and she asked me for directions to the nearest bus stop. I literally just pulled out my phone and pulled up Google Maps, pointed and said "We here. That's it" (in Spanish of course) and that totally did the job Of course you should try to get the conjugation right but usually you're understandable and even if you get it atrociously wrong they'll probably just stop and correct you Vocabulary is a little harder to pick up from context so more often you'll be stopped on that one. But even when you get it wrong it can lead to some comical exchanges. I was once chatting in Spanish with a fluent friend of mine from high school and I said something about being "tonto díficil" when he just busted out laughing - makes sense, as I was pretty sure I used the wrong word but I just went for it anyway because that's what conversation is about. Turns out "tanto" means "a lot" or "super" while "tonto" means "dumb". "Stupid hard" works in English but not so well in Spanish Basically, one of the worst things you can do is try to prep your response in your head a bunch before you deliver it. It's (at first) probably the best way to ensure you don't use any wrong conjugations but it also pretty much guarantees you won't understand what the other guy is saying, which is way more important than speaking perfectly

This is the first thing my fluently bilingual husband told me about speaking in Spanish: Don’t’ try to translate in your head. Think in Spanish. Once I started doing this, my Spanish improved dramatically. Also, learning Spanish in chunks is very helpful. The Spring Spanish KZbin channel teaches Spanish this way.

I think your idea of using "chunks" instead of individual words may be a good idea (in addition to using phrases in which the verb is already conjugated so we don't have to think about it as you mentioned in another video). You are a wonderful teacher. You do what all good teachers do. You make your lessons relevant to the student. You provide multiple examples of what to do (say, consider etc.) and explain why. Also, by displaying various backgrounds as you walked, you made us curious about what was going on and therefore engaged. I don't know if you consciously knew the value of that, or if it was something subconcious and intuitive, but it was highly effective. Perhaps being a poor Spanish student in high school is what makes you an excellent Spanish teacher now. Full marks (from a SPED teacher 😉).

I then took it back seriously in 2008 and then after a few months I went to BA Argentina and studied at a school for my 3 weeks that I was there. Then in about 2013 i stopped again. I then took it back up in 2017 online with a course online I found from KZbin. This course was quite good. So for the past 5 or 6 years I log onto an app called Tandem. This is a language exchange app with different people. And now I gave come across your vídeos that have really inspired me. It’s good to learn from a non Spanish speaking native because I know that you were once where I am!!! I really need to crack this listening!!!
@QrooSpanish Жыл бұрын
Thanks for following the channel. Listening comprehension is the toughest part of learning the language. I found that it was helpful to focus on listening to speakers from the target country. That way the "timing belt" in your head gets calibrated to their way of speaking. I equate it to English. I've spoken it my whole life but if I watch a show or movie on BBC, I put on the subtitles so I don't miss something. My ear is just not as in tune to that English.

This was amazing! I plateaued a long time ago and had no idea how to continue. Didn’t want to take yet another class that doesn’t work. You hit the nail on the head here! Now I’m excited again instead of discouraged! Thank you! New subscriber!

I'm so glad I found your channel. I follow several other 'how to learn spanish' channels here on youtube and your way of teaching is different which gives my spanish a new fill to it. Keep up your good work/. Jennie from Sweden

Thank you, I am currently in La Pineda, Costa Dorado, holiday resort manly for the Spanish. Most locals speak Catalan and are very abrupt by nature. But once they notice you are making an effort speaking Castilian the attitude changes completely and folk couldn't be more helpful 😊

Very interesting and useful concept. Getting the conversation rolling and not overthinking it is a great way to challenge yourself and level-up your Spanish. Beginners can also start by using conjunctions i.e. "conjoining words" like and, but, or and stretch the heck out of those! Lol

I found this helpful, using your chunks for now as I`m a beginner

I think you might have the best 'learn to speak Spanish' channel on KZbin. Maybe it's because you're self-taught you have a special insight that allows you to explain it simply.

Before, I couldn't even watch a video that called them "chunks". It made me blow chunks lol. Then I discovered your videos. "Constructions" sounds much more appropriate and accurate. Thanks for that term, and for being so no-nonsense in your educating technique.

I'm not a fan of the term chunks either.

Great advice, I see that 2 weeks ago Wayne Yinger mentioned something, that happens to me which causes the slow train effect! i.e. time taking to think of what you want to say firstly in English, then translating it in your head before actually saying it! This I suppose is at the very essence of learning to think in Spanish. The problem is this becomes an elongated train in itself and because that's how we all start it becomes a bad habit to break. I find what helps is to pick a subject you know well like a hobby (e.g. gardening / growing / caring etc etc) then conjure phrases and use masses of repetition. I do this with my native Spanish teacher who luckily loves gardening! The good thing is that you can go straight to Spanish with the initial idea forming activity of what you want to say. Its still also an issue for me though, so thanks for your 'chunking' ideas which is a development from what I have been doing, Saludos Steve

You know what? Native speakers (of whatever language) do the same thing! So this technique is not at all artificial; it leads one toward natural fluency.
