Quincy, you really are a great resource. Not only is it useful for me to follow you but it gives me comfort, given the strong bond you have maintained with the great fathers of drums and your ability to be both institutional and direct. The language of jazz drums (whose strong direct or indirect influence is however evident in many drummers who have made the history of rock, blues and R&B) benefits from an approach like yours: specific, precise, competent and yet open to everyone. Being able to convey not only "what" and "how" but also "why" is not easy and you do it, getting to give Music and musicality lessons even when they seem to be just lessons about technique.

Really great lesson Q! Those are true bebop ideas that everyone needs to know. There's a lot of stuff I heard when I was starting out that's based on more modern concepts that I got confused by like Bill Stewart playing groups of 5 and 7. I remember having to stop and really spend quality time listening to Philly Joe Jones, Max and Art Taylor to understand the foundation. I'm still going back in time learning about the greats!

Quincy, in the opening of your video you sounded similar to what Philly Joe would play. Philly Joe and the klook were great bebop drummers. Miles said in his biography that Philly Joe was one of his most favorite drummers of all time, then along came Tony who really blew his mind. To me Philly used the drum rudiments probably more than any other drummer that I can think of. He was something else.

Hello, I have been following your vlog for a while now and wanted to write something. First of all I would like to thank you for the time and energy you put into posting these beautiful and informative videos. I am a drummer of almost 62 years of age and have played pop music for most of the years, but have always been a fan of jazz music. Lately I started doing some jazz exercises for fun. I still had some exercises from carrier days when I went to class but these have been narrowed down to some jazz swing exercises. And the history of jazz music is so big that you lose your way. That's why your videos are so vital for me to find the right direction. Greetings from Belgium, Erwin

Great video! Quick question, is the "Be bop" phrase two 1/8 notes with a swing feel? or a doted 1/8 followed by a 1/16(basically the " a")? Thanks!
@unityquartet3297
@unityquartet3297 2 жыл бұрын
Both! Or even first and third notes of 8th-note triplet! Each has a slightly different feel, or “accent/dialect” (this is a language, right?!). Dotted 8th 16th “a” might be considered more old-school/trad swing; can sound a little stiff or corny? All subjective of course! Learn them all and find what sounds good to you...? I nearly forgot - straight 8ths too - you’ll be surprised how straight some horn players play their 8th note phrases. The accents/weights they give certain notes in the phrase make it swing. OK, enough already! Thanks for the great video Q!

With the third phrase, I noticed that sometimes you transitioned a little from swing to straight feel and then back to swing. I do that sometimes, but I want to know- is that a viable way to play while you solo? I know that swingin it hard is the move when you play medium tempo swing and that there are different levels to it, but sometimes (especially in a jam setting) switching up the feel has it’s positives and negatives. Just want to hear a pro’s opinion on switchin it up because sometimes it works and sometimes it throws off the band 😂

Awesome question Theo! It's all subjective and super personal. So as long as it feels good and appropriate to the idea that you're trying to play, it's all fair game:)

4:00 man, that accented paradiddle pattern R l r r l R l l at that speed…how long does it take to get it there? unreal 😮 I believe that‘s a Philly Joe phrase…he plays it on Dr. Jackle

Don’t worry about the speed. Just play it clean at a slow tempo and nudge it up slowly. Of course I would first just isolate playing paradiddle on the snare and focus on getting the speed up there first. Have fun!

Buddy played every style INCLUDING bebop with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. But most drummers only no him as a swing big band drummer. He was so much more than that.

Your right. But when young people youtube Buddy they will get big band swing. Buddy played bebop not sure he loved it.

Hi Quincy. I will speak for myself. We all can,t or did not go to a top music school. I have young guys tell me all the time that they watch you and others and become fine Jazz players. Most will never play in a real pro jazz ensemble that only exists at the top schools. Maybe 10 guys got the best gigs on the road or the studio. To what end is all this for. We are mostly stuck in the basement. I have said it before to young guys. If you want to at least be around Jazz or music in general then just become a music teacher. I watched a JAZZ!!! lesson the other day and the guy went straight to that hell place for a drummer. He said before I deleted his page that today we will be learning some useless stuff. 6/67 1/76 how about on your next gig you could impress everyone in the jazz trio with compounded 32nd notes as fast as you can. Practice and enjoy. There are no gigs. No one has found that sweet spot for drummers to learn Jazz. Listen to albums and learn from the greats respectfully but do not use much of it today because some square jazz guy will say just playtime??? BUT!! I went to Texas A&M. I studied for 6 tears in school and the guy says playtime. Is that all we are good for?? . I have polished up on so much of your stuff and have nowhere to go. Your jazz future guys will be at PS 40 in any city. You will not make any money either way. BUT it is fun. Why compounded rhythms? Life is compounded enough. What a joke, just playtime. You're wasting your time with 5 hrs a day practicing 32nd notes. I am not sorry for talking real honest drumming with you. learning inverted this and that and 45 ways to play a paradiddle. Most big band leaders have no clue what a paradiddle is. Big bands with no drums for the most part come with CD and music charts that you can,t interpret. Anyway, have fun and get a teaching degree. $. P/S nothing I said here is new. Wedding gigs do not pay the bills and you will never get to play Bebop. All those guys are gone. We can never sound like Philly Joe but you can mimic it for fun. Turning in My Round Badge kit to the anals of the basement. Yes, I am one of you a drummer and I have been around and use to watch these Vids. Do not forget the club dates. You may get a free beer (TAP) of course and $33.00. The steak house gigs do not feed you. Most of us just go to a cheap buffet after a night of playing time. How fast can you play Hava Nagila It will be required in the real world of gigs. NOTE. Do not put laundry or pillows inside of your exotic wood drums. I rely on hope you let the students read this. It is not taught at SCHOOL. No offense meant. Just been there and done that. Do not forget your 100 miles an hour hand speed it will come in handy at an audition.? Usually will get you canned.

I will just say this. I'm sorry you're jaded. I'm sorry music hasn't worked out for you. I'm sorry that you feel the need to TRY and tear down the hopes of others who watch this and actually feel inspired, motivated and excited to LEARN. Most people who watch my videos are not pros, nor are they striving to be pros. Many play as a hobby, just like I play tennis as a hobby, knowing I will NEVER make a full living as a tennis pro. But maybe I can win a amateur tennis tournament and win 50 bucks. Cool and healthy goals that keeps me motivated to learn and get better. Many of my subscribers are players who play because they simply LOVE IT and want to improve at it playing the occasional gig here and there. I strive to spread light, not darkness. I hope whatever you're going through gets better and I would encourage you to keep such negative and jaded comments to yourself because most drummers who watch my videos do not feel the same as you, nor do they care to hear from someone like you who is just a frustrated person who could not live their dreams through music. Music is beautiful thing. We need more beauty and love in the world, not ugliness, bitterness and anger. I wish you all the best and hope that more love will start to seep into your world that you won't feel the need to share such negative energy with others.
