I believe is very the oposite of what "rock tunning" usually is. Loose bottom on toms and high tension on top heads for the high pitch. Having coated heads helps on the more "muffled" warm sound. Of course it will depend on general taste.

Hey Quincy! I really enjoy your videos! This one especially is very helpful! I had a question regarding bass drum foot technique. I’ve been using heel-down technique because it allows me to have more control for feathering in jazz. But I’ve noticed a lot of jazz drummers use heel-up technique for certain situations, like if they want to play fast and loud. What are your thoughts on heel-up vs. heel-down?
@drumqtips2 жыл бұрын
You need both techniques but for jazz, heel down should be your default technique using heel up when you need to play quick doubles or louder notes. Thanks for the question Lucas.

1:40 “The foundation of most modern drumming is bebop”- I finally took the plunge in practicing bebop - Riley’s book was very lonely on the bookshelf, you kept popping up in my feed, and I was tired of sounding like a rock drummer playing jazz (and a bit bored playing rock). A few weeks in everything started to make sense and my funk chops and rock chops (and my sense of time in general) took a massive leap forward thanks to the bebop practice! I want to let you know that I really enjoy and appreciate what you’re doing. Thanks, man!

AWESOME!!! Been playing for years but my technique is seriously compromised by a seriously damaged right wrist that has had 7 bone crunching ops on with drills, bolts, screws grafts and so on. I’m awaiting my 8th op at the moment, also don’t have anywhere to set up my practise mesh kit until we move at around the end of July … Now I don’t play jazz/bebop but I have always wanted to be able to play a bit, not looking to become the next Buddy Rich as far as speed and intricacy is concerned as my wrist seriously restricts that to the point where the momentum alone going around the kit can be painful but as said would like to learn some. Now I’m ok with single stroke, double strokes and paras BUT their not really that controlled but I can do them … Think these little phrases will help to get them a bit better. All in all you make it look a bit more accessible to me!! So thank you for that and I’m SUBSCRIBED!!! 👊🏻👊🏻

What note value are you playing on the roll at the end ? I slowed it down and it seems you are playing. A single then 8 pairs of doubles after it per drum . ( 17 notes per drum and a rest after the first single into the doubles would give 18 notes per drum . ???
@drumqtips4 ай бұрын
Short answer, I don’t know. Long answer is, I tried to just feel the note value rather than think about it. So I practiced it at different temples then it starts to become more natural that I don’t have to think about it for it to work out. I hope that makes sense!
@raywoods3938 Жыл бұрын
after some listening over and over to you playing EX.4 I am able to duplicate your feel ,there appears to be a subtle difference between your feel and straight more ridged way to play paradiddles, ,,can you explain the difference ,at this point in time I am playing them both ways,,but I am not sure what the technical difference is , could it be swing?
@drumqtips Жыл бұрын
It’s somewhere between straight and swung. That’s all I can say but seems like you figured it out👍🏾
@richwilson37672 жыл бұрын
I’ve been playing for for over 40 years and I still can’t do paradiddles very frustrating. I use match grip. I think that limits some of the freedom on drums.
@drumqtips2 жыл бұрын
It's not how fast, it's how clean. Speed is overrated Rich. If you can't play a paradiddle fast, it doesn't mean you can't play with expression and soul. My hands are super slow compared to many of my peers but that doesn't keep me from playing with feeling, passion and clarity. Thanks for watching Rich and stay encouraged my friend:)

Great video. Among my many old drum tutor books, I have a book of Max Roach solos. It was only when I tracked down recordings of him playing some of the patterns that I realised what was 'meant' by the notation. Of course, 10 drummers will interpret and play the same notation in 10 subtly different ways. This taught me that 'feel' cannot always be adequately notated and has to be learned and developed through experience - from playing, listening, copying and a degree of analysis.

Hey Quincy, love this as usual. Any chance you could do a video on what instrumentation works best with what soloing? Like, how do you decide to play certain cymbals or patterns depending on the instrument you're backing up? I tend to play closed hats for bass solos, for example, but other than that, I don't really know how to adapt to different musical situations in jazz through instrumentation.
@drumqtips2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for watching. The best advice I can tell you is listen to how the masters handle playing with different bands and different instrumentation. That's the best way to learn what to do. Cheers!
