Noted Arthur! I haven't done one yet as I don't really have a tried and true method that I feel I could do a whole lesson on. But I'm sure I could come up with something. Thanks for the feedback and support!

I believe is very the oposite of what "rock tunning" usually is. Loose bottom on toms and high tension on top heads for the high pitch. Having coated heads helps on the more "muffled" warm sound. Of course it will depend on general taste.

There are so many iconic bebop phrases…it makes me think there should be a comprehensive book or manual of some sort of these popular phrases. Your knowledge of the style as well as the way you approach teaching this stuff makes me think you could do this pretty well. I know I would personally love this kind of tool for my practicing.

1:40 “The foundation of most modern drumming is bebop”- I finally took the plunge in practicing bebop - Riley’s book was very lonely on the bookshelf, you kept popping up in my feed, and I was tired of sounding like a rock drummer playing jazz (and a bit bored playing rock). A few weeks in everything started to make sense and my funk chops and rock chops (and my sense of time in general) took a massive leap forward thanks to the bebop practice! I want to let you know that I really enjoy and appreciate what you’re doing. Thanks, man!

Great video. Among my many old drum tutor books, I have a book of Max Roach solos. It was only when I tracked down recordings of him playing some of the patterns that I realised what was 'meant' by the notation. Of course, 10 drummers will interpret and play the same notation in 10 subtly different ways. This taught me that 'feel' cannot always be adequately notated and has to be learned and developed through experience - from playing, listening, copying and a degree of analysis.

Hi Quincy. I hope you are having a good weekend. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. Your videos have re ignited the passion in me to learn/practice like I haven’t felt since my early teens. I’m now practicing things I should have practiced way back then. I just didn’t have the knowhow really. Your videos have really inspired me. You teach things in a really clear way and easy to follow (quite easy😊). You have shown me how good simple phrases can sound. Shame I didn’t have a teacher like when I was growing up. I’m sure things would have been so much different for me now. I doubt I would have quit when I was 20 years old. Maybe now I might be able to put a simple but impressive solo together (pending months and months of practice). So one again, thank you so much for sharing your great talent with the world. (I’m in the UK by the way)

Thanks Quincy for the encouragement. I’m getting quite disheartened with it ☹️I think I might have set the bar too high for me, expecting to be able to play all the rudiments at speed without the tip of the sticks coming higher than 1 inch from the drum head ☹️I will keep trying for a bit but I don’t think I’m going to master that ☹️enjoy your day 😊

Hey Quincy! I really enjoy your videos! This one especially is very helpful! I had a question regarding bass drum foot technique. I’ve been using heel-down technique because it allows me to have more control for feathering in jazz. But I’ve noticed a lot of jazz drummers use heel-up technique for certain situations, like if they want to play fast and loud. What are your thoughts on heel-up vs. heel-down?
@drumqtips3 жыл бұрын
You need both techniques but for jazz, heel down should be your default technique using heel up when you need to play quick doubles or louder notes. Thanks for the question Lucas.
