I wish I could find more Marc Alaimo interviews. I hope he knows how much love his Gul Dukat is getting these days, 25 years since the show rapped. Best villain in Trek history. One of the best villains of all time.

I very much like the focus of many of these conversations. It's important to keep looking at all of the issues this series told stories about, because so many of those issues are still screaming at us, in expensive suits, every day.

Glad to see Marc Alaimo disagree with Behr's assertion that Dukat's basically evil. He's a very bad, selfish guy, but he had good things about him and showed genuine heroism, too. Also, he was so charming that I could never hate him. :) Thanks so much for uploading this stuff.
@dragonknightleader15 жыл бұрын
Like Hitler, Dukat was man of his time and extreme circumstances based on what was happening to his nation forces him to act in certain ways. Both were soldiers served a weak country on the losing end of war. Cardassia in general was on the decline and withdrew from whatever place they had influence even before the war with the Klingons. They then take steps to rally their people and become a strong nation again only to be defeated with significant military failures. Behr may be a less dangerous Mark Waid (Hail Hydra!), but what he actually did was show just how a man can turn evil. Dukat's situation got more dire the more involved he got.

Thanks so much for this. I loved DS9 and still do for the complexity and depth of its characters, the way their stories were told. There were so many shades of grey but that only meant there was so much more to each character than one could see on the surface. I also thoroughly enjoyed the story arc. It might not be a very popular thing to say but I much prefer that type of storytelling to TNG which for me is also enjoyable but I never felt myself invested in those characters as I did with DS9. Even the bad guys were good and so interesting, thanks, in no small part, to the amazing acting on the part of the gentlemen on this panel. The discussion about Dukat towards the end is a perfect illustration of my point. I do miss seeing Andrew J. Robinson here though, absolutely loved Garak!
@sarahkinsey54346 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! I love the long character and story arcs. It gives so much more depth to the characters, I felt so connected with the characters. I wish Andrew Robinson was here too since they had the rest of the Cardassians. Garak is one of, if not THE best written and acted character in the franchise!

I've always been a TNG fan. I tried to watch DS9 three times (and 3rd time was a charm) before it finally clicked with me. IMO, the series really picked up in season 4 and became must-watch until the last episode. Many of these actors (in this panel) were responsible for that. It's nice to hear their perspectives on these roles.

I think the problems with these DS9 Panels is the format. The actors are on such a leash to talk freely because the Moderator and writer guy, Ira, keeps injecting their politics in. What they should have done is just have a panel with only the writer and Moderator, and have a separate panel for the actors. That said, I've always enjoyed DS9 for the Cardassians, the Dominion stuff, and a bunch of episodes, but hated aspects of the overall series which made me despise it. DS9 was great at setting up issues and dilemmas that were gray, but had a nasty habit of forcing the gray to black or white conclusions. It's pretty apparent now that the writers like this Ira guy was responsible for that. Perfect example is like what he says about Ducat, nobody knew if he was going to be a "good or bad guy"....then Ira see's on the chat boards that the fans like Ducat, and decides can't have that. So he forces Ducat to be "more evil" rather than letting the fans decide for themselves. What about Kira? She was a terrorist, why didn't they force her to be "more evil" to pay for her crimes? Nope, forced it so that she's comes off as one of the "good guy". So much railroading just like in this panel and their injected politics. Anyways, loved Ducat, Garak, Dumar, and Weyoun....overall best acted, best characters, and best dynamic with other characters. I agree with Marc saying it was stupid they made Ducat a Bajoran for some dumb reason of making him his victims or something that the writer said. Ducat's long story arc should have been about redemption and tied with Kira and Garak, not some stupid BS about grabbing for ultimate evil power and Sisko and his worm hole aliens.

WE GET IT!! The Romulans and Klingons were communism and the Cardasians were Germany in the 40's. Lets hear about their species, not some silly tie in to today's political climate. lets hear about Casey Biggs salvation and all of his personal demons. geez, if all else fails, just loop a Morn fart for 45 mins.
