Degueulasse means disgusting, revolting, swinish...not puke, not bitch, not scumbag.

@Jelios01 dégueulasse means disgusting! that's it! "Gueule" means throat so in french is something that has to do with taste, simply like disgusting... and its not "slang", its part of the normal vocaubulary

Getting off the Degueulasse thing for a moment, I just want to say that the music in this last scene is some of the best movie music I've ever heard. It's sad, romantic, thrilling, cinematic and beautiful. God, is this a great movie.

from a french "Déguelasse" is a french slang word, a little bit difficult to translate, ... bastard, rotten, rotten bastard, he's a real shit,... ( little bitch or scumbag can also work here too but...) and for me: disgusting is more appropriate for a thing, a fact than a feeling or a state of mind
@Nakewi

I think it's too difficult to translate. I am french and I saw this movie with my friends. We didn't understand the same thing. "Je suis dégueulasse" : Michel understands that his crimes are disgusting and that's why he didn't leave Paris and wait the police. "C'est dégueulasse" : This situation should have been better, it's disgusting. "Tu es dégueulasse" : Bitch ! Why have you denounced me ? Sorry if I made any mistakes.

"C'est dégueulasse" is a well-spread expression in colloquial French. It is used to point out the seemingly unfairness of a situation, or of a decision that fell upon you. For example, if you were punished at school without a proper/alleged reason, you could exclaim "Mais c'est dégueulasse !".

I kind of feel like the controversy comes from translators taking too many liberties. It seems to be pretty clearly 'It's disgusting.' 'What did he say?' 'He said you're disgusting' 'What does 'disgusting' mean?'

Well, I'm French. He says "c'est vraiment dégueulasse", which the voice off erroneously repeats as "t'es vraiment dégueulasse". The former means "it's truly disgusting", the latter "you're truly disgusting".

@lcascone86 "a person can be disguting like a food" yes Icascone I agree, that why, in french we can use this word "deguelasse" for a person or a fact. (son of a bitch, bastard,...) is just for give an idea of the meaning because in french, say "deguelasse" for somebody means a little more than "a bad taste like a food"

@wiatomlo, I think it also plays on the fact that Patricia is American, so may not know all the French slang. But yeah, it's not that hard to translate, it's more a matter of, 'Why did that happen in the film?'
@tsntana
@tsntana 14 жыл бұрын
@Jelios01 That being the case, why don't they just sub it in quotes? I'm/You're a "déguelasse". What's a "déguelasse"? I think this would make more sense in the translation instead of trying to translate a slang word.

So much confusion here. He says: "J'suis vraiment degeulasse" (listen again if you think he says "C'est vraiment degeulasse". That's what I heard first too, but then you can clearly hear "J'suis). So that translates as "I'm really disgusting" as a statement, not as a question to Patricia as somebody else suggested. Then she asks what he said and the policeman turns it around on her reporting he said that SHE is the disgusting one. Then she asks what "degeulasse" (disgusting) means.

C'est vraiment dure à dire. J'ai la version Blu-Ray avec la track sonore plus claire et c'est vraiment difficile d'en être certain. "J'suis vraiment dégeulasse" vs. "C'est vraiment dégeulasse". Je remet en doute, mais tu as peut-être raison.
@cedrickrajotte7612
@cedrickrajotte7612 8 жыл бұрын

@Jelios01 Yes... we are saying pretty much the same thing eheh I mean i just wanted to say that in English you can say disgusting to a person and you have the same meaning of dégueulasse... that is why i dont understand why three different translations for this scene of à bout de souffle

@tsntana Yes I agree, tsntana that why I watch movie in the originally spoken if I can understand it's better than trying to translate. I ve write a comment about the translation just because a lot of people spoke about that on this page.

Ce qui est dit : - Je suis vraiment dégueulasse - Qu'est ce qu'il a dit ? - Il a dit : "vous êtes vraiment une dégueulasse" - Qu'est-ce que c'est "dégueulasse" Cela suppose que la traduction faite par l'homme hors champs soit volontairement mauvaise.

the last one's probably the closest. "degueulasse" is a french word that means "disgusting", but it's a lot more vulgar than that....we don't really have an equivalent in English, but "makes me puke" is pretty close

He definitely says "C'est" (It's) and not "Chui" (I am). I don't even think they say "chui" in France it's a very Quebec French "Joile" term. I am French and I am 100% sure he says "C'est". "Je suis" kills all the poetry of the line.

I mean that in English, the last one makes the most sense. In the first clip, the cop just adds the last part and finishes his sentence for him, which seems a little silly. In the second, I suppose "It's a real scumbag" technically works, but typically one would say "he's/she's a real scumbag" or "they're real scumbags." You don't tend to call an inanimate object or abstract thought, which "it's" is used for," a "scumbag." Therefore the last one is the most gammatically correct, and believable.

I'm doing a paper on Breathless and I'll share a little secret with you folks: Michel was an existentialist. What he found disgusting was as soon as he realised he was destined to die he was finally able to live his own life rather than imitate a hollywood ideal (bogart, with the lip rub) but alas, almost as soon as he gets this understanding he was shot dead, and breathless. patricia misunderstands more than what he says: while he dies making playful faces she responds with the lip rub. enjoy.

cantstaythesame: people love labelling, but hate being labelled. Truth be told Absurdism can almost be studied as a direct extension of Existentialism. Stress the "almost", because Camus' work was significant enough that if he wants his own subgenre he damn well deserves one. But absurdism is really getting at the same concept as Ex., in a different method. Camus wanted to distance himself from Ex. to emphasis this difference. Camus might as well have said he was an Absurdist, not an Algerian

The beginning is muddled and ambiguous. "Dégueulasse" doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I don't even know what "c'est" is referring to in this case. Sometimes I'd like to think he says "elle," as in "it (life) is really disgusting." But that's more just my wishful thinking and it would be disregarding the sibilance at the beginning. Wouldn't it make so much more sense though (and correspond with the confusion between Seberg and the detective)? Too bad it's a reach.

(continued) Godard changed this entire ending too, by the way. Truffaut (the writer) wrote: Jean-Luc chose a violent end because he was by nature sadder than I. He was in the depths of despair when he made that film. He needed to film death, and he had need of that particular ending Michel is a character obsessed with his future. Earlier, he returns a paper b/c it had 'no horoscope'. Famed French existentialist author, albert camus, died mere weeks before filming began, by the way.

Eh bien non, en réécoutant, on ne saurait dire s'il dit "je" ou "tu", c'est aussi ce qui rend cette scène si fascinante. Toute l'ambiguïté de la nature féminine est dévoilée là. Elle a mal, elle est libre, elle est opaque quant à ce qui domine. Opaque, surtout à elle-même. Solal a signé une des plus belles bandes son jamais livrée. Gageons que cela sera revu et étudié dans un siècle, comme les Kubrick les Chaplin et les Welles.

There is no way he is saying "tu"! Listen to it! He says, "Chui vraiment degeulasse". The ambiguity / irony arises from the fact that the man repies, "Vous etes vraiment une degeulasse" -- which is NOT what Michel said... And Godard is, in fact, already regarded in the same category as Kubrik and Welles. Godard codified the very notion of "auteur" in cinematic theory, and French New Wave is a very important and influential movement in 20th century cinema.
