It has everything to do with one's growing experience, and little to do with being objective, although it may please some Japanese (well observed from the comments here), whose most favorite topic is 日本すごい. I have been living in Tokyo for more than 10 years, still can't stand the Japanese food, or at least don't enjoy it, every China visiting is a salvation for my stomach. But the good thing of living in Tokyo is that there are always other options, I'll give you that. But guess what, those kind of options are dramatically increasing in China too, especially in tier one cities. The economy of Japan has been plateaued for a long long time, if not shrunk , while that of China is still upwards, at a breathtaking spread, every time I go back I got the "山中(日本)方七日 世上(中国)已千年" feeling.
