That school couldn't have gone to better owners. Not only have you restored it, you have modified it faithfully. No big metal boxes and modern design, proper brick and mortar with wood.

As a former archaeologist, I'd get some self-testing kits for the soil in the areas where the toilets used to be - even dig down about a foot to test below the frost levels or "sunshine line." You might not want to grow any food there, and/or you might want to bring in some extra soil or gravel to make a barrier. Old human waste can be dangerous, even if buried, even if exposed to the sun or that lovely diesel. There are also amendments and biological things you can add to human waste soils to accelerate the demise of harmful bacteria or viruses.

For the kids hall on the concrete area, have you thought about a floor to ceiling built in bookcase, you could fill it with 2nd hand kids books (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, Tricia Belsen, Black Stallion, etc), reference tools (encyclopedia, thesaurus, etc), and other classical literature.

I was just scrolling through the KZbin listings, and your video popped up. The farm across the street was my grandparent's. The core of their house on the farm uses the original 1 room schoolhouse that served the area before your bigger schoolhouse took over across the street. They took an old chicken coup, and butted it up to the north side of the building to serve as their kitchen to get started. Later on they added more additions, so you can't really tell that the core is an old wooden schoolhouse nowadays. I always found the schoolhouse connection between the 2 properties quite interesting. Their children now own the farm. I've seen that building sit empty most of my life. Some people tried to mess with it over time, but the financial burden was to great. It's amazing to see that you've truly transformed that building into a home.

Thanks for answering the bathroom Q. Way back in the day I was head custodian of an repurposed elementary school for BOCES in Sayville. The school was 2 stories and a full basement built in 1936. It opened in September 1937 with giant ramps out back to basement for bikes, one side for girl and other for boys. The skeleton lock and keys were the first to go. Second was breaking shellac on stage floor for the flip up foot lights, that still worked! The halls were terrazzo with green tiles 3/4 up the walls and recessed lighting in foyer. Large round windows on staircase landings. What a difference 30 yrs made in schools.

Your home is beautiful . I can’t imagine the patience and hard work that went into it. As for inspiration for your children’s rooms, maybe ask children, and theme their rooms around that. My brothers were obsessed with camping when they were little. So my parents made beds out of air mattresses and tents, and put themed decals on the walls. This lasted until they were about 10, when Power Rangers became a thing. My parents just swapped the decals, and got furniture that was simple enough to go with anything. As for the giant vents, I think they would make wonderful lanterns for your garage top deck.

Around the time that I retired, I had the chance to buy a unit in a former school. It was beautifully converted. One classroom was the open plan living space, another had been divided to produce two bedrooms, and, I think, the girls' toilets became utility space, guest toilet, and two en-suite bathrooms. It was a great property. I sat down in the sitting area and realised that it was not the place for me. As a teacher approaching retirement, the living space just screamed "work" to me. I simply could not see beyond the classroom. Such a shame. I wish you a fantastic life in your school. You have done an amazing job. It looks like a homely place, but if I was there, I would be seeing the classroom instead of the home. I'd be waiting for the bell for the start of lessons 😂

I've followed you through this entire process. Your dedication to the hard work this massive renovation required is unbelievably impressive. You didn't just hire people to take care of it, you dove in and accomplished so much of it yourself. True sweat equity. As for those two metal fixtures from the old roof you're storing in the murder barn, I'd go with twin bird baths. Clean and powder coat them if possible, and if not you could use rattle cans. Let a water source to come up through the cavity in the center, and have the water fill up in that gap at the top between the trim ring and center cap. This will allow the dome to create a small hill island in the center for the birds to sit on as they drink and/or bathe. Those hot dry summer months will create some very thankful birds. Add some bird seed feeders around them and you're entire family can enjoy the wildlife. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
