I know incredibly little about the tech audio side of development, but this is fascinating to look into, well explained too!

Marcus, what a lovely message! I'm so happy to hear that it's been fun to take a look at even from a non-tech audio perspective! Thanks for watching.

What's nice about Quads over Ambisonics is that Quad arrays can have a really nice spacing which can give your ambient sound bed serious width over typical Ambisonics format A recording arrays which rely on extremely tight/point microphone arrays. The timing between the speakers of a larger quad array really exaggerates the depth of the environment. The IRT cross is my favorite approach to quad ambiences, as the diaphragm spacing is just about head-width.

SUCH a good point. The width from these Quads is enormous, so that makes a lot of sense! Thanks for this super clear explanation and now making me purchase two more DPA's to complete an IRT cross :D

but then it boils to how you render/listen to the content...

Do you have any good primer recommendations on what quad ambiences are? I'm super new to this, but what I'm thinking they are is a way to add directionality and panning to a spot sound source. Would it be like standing in a single spot in a forest, and hearing a creek to your left and a bird above you? Instead of doing them all as separate point sources, they're all together? That's a blind guess based on this, but I'd like to get the basics, because this seems really interesting to integrate.
