Jets are just not efficient or you would see them. The power to weight ratio on outboards to inboard pretty much make inboards and IO’s obsolete fit the most part. Plus the space you save inside the boat.

@@HERPDEDERP49 jets are very inefficient compared to a prop driven motor. Mercury and Yamaha both offer a jet drive in various sizes. Hears the rub, it takes a 115 hp power head to generate a 80 hp jet drive. And it still won’t keep up with the same boat with an 80 hp prop drive. The Four winds you had delivered a ton of torque with a V8 that was very heavy. That same boat with an outboard would burn “half”:the fuel and be out performed by a new V8 Mercury 225. These boats and motors today are incredible. I’m retired and live at the lake. These new boats and motors deliver unbelievable performance. 1980 Corvette vs 2021 Corvette comparison. Blessings.

Idk man, the 425s seem slow compared to the mercs. It's a 25hp difference but the gap in speed is big. Maybe it's just the foot/drive of the engines but once you have more than 2, you should have the option to go for speed because the torque is more than enough. I mean, 4 of the 300s did 50+mph so 425?

Perhaps you left out boat size and type of boat in your comparison. If you strap a trolling motor on a raft, you will move right along. Same trolling motor on a yacht and it's not really moving. My point is, types and sizes of boats require more power. Now, certainly, this boat may have overkill for power, but you don't know what the needs are for that person or boat.
