SA wanted to leave for years, stop talking rubbish. Then look at the ecosystem properly. Rugby is on a fast decline in NZ. Nobody cares about it any longer. Last RWC 12% of all the players were kiwis. 25% of head coaches would've been kiwis if Rennie hadn't got sacked. Now virtually every major team has a kiwi in the coaching staff, even SA have brought in Tony Brown who is doing great things with your attack. Take NZ out of world rugby and it is in serious trouble. The Pacific Islands will fold as their players learn to play in the NZ system. 23 of 33 in Samoa's RWC squad were kiwis. 15 of Tonga's squad were kiwis. South Africa has it's own political and economic problems that threaten its future. Take NZ out and SA loses it's greatest rival and it will decline to European levels, it will kill Pacific rugby, and most likely it will decline drastically in Australia. International rugby is at a major crossroads.

@@joaofigueiras1106South Africa was talking about it for years without active steps to make it happen. Just like politicians talk about building a speed railway or a new damn that never happens. South African rugby by nature is very conservative on the pitch and in the boardroom. Most pundits I still believe liked the idea of Super Rugby over European competitions, it just needs adjustment. So it was hard to change to a new format somewhere new. Isolating South African rugby during COVID was the action that turned the apparatus around and made it easy for South Africa to depart from their conservative nature to go and find new friends.

So much for expanding the best interests of the game which southern hemisphere teams will have financially benefited from. The sport was struggling since the late 00s and the wallabies have been majorly struggling since 2016 - when Folau was in his prime the wallabies had already started losing fairly consistently to the likes of Argentina and Scotland. Don’t get me wrong, great player but his whole fiasco was completely insignificant compared to the combined combination of 20 years of decline from far more important things like grassroots, the switch to Foxtel, losing players to NRL/AFL/overseas, etc

Brilliant interview, spot on when Quade remarked on impact of removing one animal from the ecosystem, in my view this applies to not only Aus/NZ but rugby overall.First step in my opinion is overhaul World Rugby ito of its composition and strategy , it’s biased and short sighted and could lead to the demise of traditional rugby( not disputing rugby needs to relevant, innovative and appeal to supporters), 2) support ideas of including tier 2 SA teams into super rugby to reignite competition as we have an abundance of players not playing international , WR to consider retention of retired players and how they could feed into mentorship’s, coaching and growing brand ambassadors to promote rugby to new generations/ markets , just my two cents thanks for a brilliant interview.

Guys , ! - step 1) Contact on Monday SA Rugby and ask them to allow the Pumas , Cheetahs , Griffons , Qriquas to tour & play in Super Rugby and get Argentine side back in. This , if you understand , is not humble pie , its a lifeline to your game. You wont get the current Boks but you'll get the future Argies and Bok's potentials which will test you proper. 2) Scrum are so important , just to assert dominance early like the ABs missed Vs Arg. 3) As Saffas we love our All Blacks rivals and Aussies but its sad whats happening over there , change course now, its in your hands.

@@allananderson949 no, the ARU pushed for that so the structure meant at least one Aussie team made the playoffs every year. I get it to a certain degree as Aussie team were mud and none in the playoffs means less exposure and losing more ground to NRL and AFL, but they should never have pushed for 5 teams. 3 was good and at least 2 were always competitive in a given year, going to 5 diluted the talent so much and they went for several years of not even beating an NZ team, which I believe flowed through to the Wallabies and knocked their confidence which is why they've not seen the Bledisloe Cup for so long. RA as they are now, needs to forget about NRL and AFL. Accept they're a minority sport but they do have a solid core in NSW, ACT and even Qld. Just go back to basics and build on that and they'll get far better results. 2003 they should've been flying after the RWC, but wasted all that money on instant success buying league has-beens. They have another chance now with a Lions tour and RWC 27 to fill the coffers. Spend wisely this time and invest in the grassroots to reap sustainable rewards in 10-20 years

SA got the best deal. Our Rand could never compete with the Euro/Pound and more and more top players were going that way before we left Super Rugby. We tried to impose a cap but it didn’t work. Now, we (SA) are getting the best of all worlds. We are playing top clubs in Europe with competitive local teams. And so many of our top players are playing for European teams as well. European teams are also benefitting because they are playing in SA a lot. For example, the Irish were not overwhelmed when they played in SA in July. SA has benefited immensely with the IP players have picked up in Europe. Cheslin Kolbe became a Bok due to his form in France. Andre Esterhuizen got back in the mix due his form at Harlequins. Jasper Wiese became a Bok due to his form ar Leicester. And so on and so on. We are competing against the best in Europe and we still play Rugby Championship. Aus and NZ are struggling without SA in the comp. And why on earth don’t they just allow their top players to go overseas? Look at your top footballers. They play all over the world.

Agree with Quade and most other assessments. I’m an England fan so mainly watch the Prem (Quins supporter), but will watch the URC, bits of the Top 14 and obviously the challenge and champions cup. SA joining has done them huge service, and has done huge damage to Aus and NZ. The Pumas obviously have a lot of their players in Europe too. It does no good, at all, for the NZ super rugby sides to absolutely trounce the soft Aussie sides week on week. The NZ pack looked meek and underpowered vs Pumas. Super Rugby is now a Mickey Mouse league and it’s showing. I want Australia to be strong. I grew up watching them in the late nineties winning everything, and they have the Lions next year - the game deserves and needs them to be back even halfway to what they can and should be.

I 💯 agree with Quad. This will be the downfall of two countries that have won 5 world cups. SA will be exposed every year to these teams and will laugh at the status of the rugby. Both Argentina and Boks don’t need ABs and Aus rugby style, they’ve played against it for decades… they will learn more from the north. Next couple of years will be interesting (FYI ABs fan).

My big peeve with rugby is that for the world cup they put powerhouses against minnows. The WC should have two leagues the powerhouses against each other and then the lowers against each other. I like to watch Georgia vs Fiji, but not one of these against a tier A - it does in my mind massive damage to growing the game. The winner of a tier 2 group should be promoted to tier 1 for the next WC and the worst team demoted to group 2. It is a win-win because we get to see more Tier 1 clashes, and then for 2-tier, we get to see more competitive games. Ice hockey does this. PS Cooper was an amazing player!

You need to remember that politics killed the domestic game in SA. The SA teams need to figure out how to fix our domestic game..... then we can look at going back to super rugby. As a country we have moved beyond the politics... but the politics need to be taken completely out of it... So that provincial rugby is 100% merit based.... there are enough players of colour and the system has loads of momentum for players of colour especially in the school system. If the negativity of the politics is away.... you might have a shot at really growing the domestic game.

Looking in from the outside its sad to see the level of Australian rugby right now. It just looks like no one is in charge and thise claiming to be seem to have no plan. Just before the South African teams left Super Rugby, the Australians were looking good with talent coming through the line but for a long time now we've hardly heard of any exciting young players coming out of Australia because we still get super rugby in SA. Watching it you can see its a one nation comp currently and its not benefiting any of the nations involved in SR, a lot needs to be done.

Super Rugby pushed South Africa out because they weren't trying to accommodate the way South Africa was playing and they're all the worse for it. Australia aren’t as bad as that result suggests. I remember when England were hammered 76-0 by a truly gifted Aussie team in 1998. 5 years later they were world champs. Maybe they needed this result to focus hard on the level of commitment needed to become great again. Don’t write Australia off in any sport. They’ll only make you look a complete mug.
