Fantastic overview Tom. With the new investment by VW, Rivian looks pretty solid as a company now. So many people here in the comments miss how performance sells vehicles, not "this is a basic grocery getter..."

Great video. Rivian still has work to do on that suspension, they have got to get that suspension working better on the launch. All of that jumping, wheel hop, side movements is hindering it. Still crazy impressive for a large vehicle like this to be able to run those speeds and ETs. 130 in the 1/4 for any big SuV is fast. Some are even faster than that. Nuts. Great time to be alive

What fun!! I would love to play around like that! But I do wonder when the focus on unbridled speed will end. From a public safety point of view, these really FAST, really HEAVY vehicles pose an increased risk for injury/death - especially for persons in smaller/lighter weight vehicles (& motorcycles) and, worse, pedestrians/bicyclists. What are your thoughts on this? I seriously think at some point in the future, acceleration speed may be regulated as top speed is. We have brought automotive performance far past the imaginations of traffic manager and urban planners. Your thoughts?

Hi Tom, we often hear the US Grid is not capable for full EV adoption and I know you did an awesome video on this earlier showing that it is not true. However, could you do a video on the US grid conditions, ownership, and upgrading. I live in Canada and here I believe all the grids and utilities are government owned. However in the US I believe many are privately owned, are older, but very profitable so not they are interested or incentivized to enlarge or make improvements. Thank you.

How many vehicles for this price range can you name that has this kind of performance? You pretty much have to double the price range (at least). Also, none of the vehicles you would come up with would be able to forge through 3’ of water and clear 15” obstacles off road, then haul 7 passengers to the airport with enough room for all their luggage.

Instead of faster, they should focus on efficiency and charging, both of which Rivian is fairly bad at. Basicly, no Rivian owner will take their vehicle to the track, but they will charge and drive it every day. Just sayin.....

I really don't understand the continued need to increase the speed and power of EVs. I've got an F150 Lightning and I have very little desire to floor it and dump all the horses to the road, not only for the cost of premature wear to my tires, but I'm not running on a track or drag strip and have no need to go that fast right away. Sure it's great when on the highway to have instant access to all the power to pass a slower vehicle, but I'm sure that most EV owners would be quite satisfied with slower 0-60 times, lower torque, and greater efficiency / range.
@BBingo-v5i3 ай бұрын
Agreed, this is a relic of the last decade when Tesla started this in order to get people excited for EVs when nothing else was an advantage of EVs over ICE cars at that time. Power comes very cheap and easy in an EV, just use a bigger electric motor or use mutiple of them. More thoughtful engineering is expensive, like creating a balanced chassis or a comfortable yet sporty suspension, these are actually the more important parts of a fun driving experience. Nowadays the EV technology and the ecosystem around it is more sophisticated, some EVs can compete directly on range with ICE cars and the charging speeds are much faster (at least in China...) or excel in traditional engineering like the new 800V-suspension system of the Porsche Taycan. EVs also find other ways to entertain like the simulated gear shifts in the Hyundai Ioniq 5N. A reason why the new Model 3 Performance is one hell of a boring car. It misses out on traditional engineering but also on unique EV selling points like vehicle-to-load/vehicle-to-grid charging or a frunk storage (It does have a frunk tho) or on quirky things like the simulated gear shifts. These are things why the mass market will switch to EVs, just faster acceleration isn't. I feel like this quad motor Rivian is following the old trend. Sure it is fun for some people and these people are willing to spend the money on it but it has become so normal to have an insanely quick accelerating EV that the excitement will die down after a while. BMW wants to add quad motors with 1200hp to its upcoming electric 3-series sedan, even the Rivian will feel slow then. Stupid development...but at least we know the BMW 3-series will be fun to drive at lower speeds and around corners, too.

this miss of the 0-60 times is a big thing! a big miss
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney2 ай бұрын
I don't see it that way at all. The claimed 0-60 times for all cars are with 1 driver and a fully charged battery when the voltage it at its maximum. My best run was four-tenths of a second slower than the quoted 2.5 time and I had a second passenger (about 170lbs) and the battery wasn't fully charged. That basically proved the claimed time as far as I'm concerned.

More range and features, not faster 0-60. My real world range doing 75-80 mph on highways is 65-70% of Rivian’s stated range. That’s still sub 300 miles for the Gen2s which doesn’t cut it for road trips vs an ICE or hybrid SUV. Similarly, their stated 2.5 second 0-60 isn’t real world. I’ve yet to see a KZbin review where anyone achieved 2.5 seconds. And that’s under ideal conditions, on an incredibly sticky track with heated tires. It’s not real world if it’s not consistently repeatable. Bottom line, don’t care about these crazy track times when Rivian has so many more important improvements to make to become more than a niche player.
@Eric-xq4dy3 ай бұрын
Not going to watch this based on title covering quarter mile times. All these 'reviews' that cover 0-60 times are just meaningless to me. I want reduced cost and better range before I'll consider these vehicles. These are pickups and cross-overs not Taycan or e-tron.

EV sales nowhere near where they should be…. Range and comfort is way more important to prospective buyers than stupid fast acceleration….. my wife’s Range Rover V8 ONLY has 540+ hp and would get smoked by these vehicles but she won’t even discuss switching to a Rivian…. Ride quality, comfort, quietness and RANGE is far superior in the RR… it’s not even close. Sorry Rivian but when my wife wants to buy a drag racing car maybe we will look at one…. In case you missed it, RANGE and COMFORT are way more desirable in a $100k vehicle

What’s “juvenile” about pushing motor technology to its limits, not to mention electrical and mechanical engineering and software development? Really? Your comment is juvenile and, quite frankly, pissy. “Sour apples” as my Great Grandmother would say. Let people have joys and interests and hobbies and even JOBS that make them happy and that they enjoy purely for pleasure. Nobody needs your negativity. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. As an adult, you should have learned this already. Manners matter. Empathy should be the default emotion. Not judgement. 😠

There is just soooo much more to care about than 0-60 so long as it doesn't completely fail at that too. I'm not going to watch this. It's a boring figure.
