Quadrajet Trick

Here's a way to easily install a Quadrajet's air horn without damaging its primary metering rods. It's a trick I've used for years - and hope it helps you! More over at www.epautos.com - the web's best Libertarian gearhead site!

That little ring thingy is a lock ring that holds the metering rod piston thingy into place whilst you put the air horn in place. What you are calling the power piston is actually an accelerator pump piston. That carb is either a 1705 series (76 thru 79) or a 1708 series (80 up to the end of production). Almost all those series have the same size primary metering rods (at least all of them I have measured) and overall fuel metering of the primaries is done by altering the jet size. The secondary metering is done by varying the metering rod size but not the primaries. True, they are delicate and getting them inserted into the jets is frustrating. Take a 1/8" pin punch and force the little piston retainer into the area provided at the top of the power piston bore. If it wont stay in place (piston pops out) just stake the top of the bore with a 1/16" or 3/32" punch in 3 places to hold it in place. The metering rods don't shut off the fuel, they are tapered and graduated so that as they lift up higher in the jet they allow more fuel to pass thus enriching the fuel mixture to provide more power. Not a trick, it is a clumsy way of doing the job, and ineffective. The job of that little ring is to hole the piston in place so that the air horn can be installed, simple.

All you had to do was seat the power enrichment valve piston retainer, note the accelerator pump is not the power piston,

I've done them for years, I push the rubber peace down and it holds its self. Just saying what ever works for you, but for me it works the best. Like your video

I just put a dab of super glue around the black retainer and let it dry before installing. That'll allow enough pressure on a worn retainer to hold it in place until install of gasket and horn.

people mocking him about the retainer...well, on well worn carbs, even if you try to stake them, they still don't stay in place.

my dad has since forgotton quite how to do it, or what the theory was, but he was telling me how they used to never change the jets in the quadra jet, but would rather drill out something next to jets or something to get it to run better, and maybe to elliminate it bogging when the secondaries opened, or maybe not that last part. i just cant remember what he was saying, but he would talk about drilling somethin at like a 45 degree angle to make it work or run better. any idea what he was referring to. i appoligze its not so clear of a statement/question, but i just cant remember exactly what he was trying to explain to me, as im not too familiar with the quad jet

Hi Eric!! What can I do to fix permanently well plugs leaking head ache? I had seen people using JB Weld some kind of malleable sealer and other used Marine Tex with short time results. Please, can you help me with this, do you have a video doing this job? Thanks, Ray Ray from Puerto Rico.

you have to drill it out and use new plugs. Epoxy like JB weld works temporarily but will leak over time

You don't know much about quadrajets do you! The little round thing your thumb is on is the keeper. Press it in with a screwdriver and it holds the rods down.

You peen the metal on the piston and the accelerator pump not power piston is a piece of cake your way over thinking this process a small tap on the side of the piston w the metering rods while holding it down with a sharp punch holds it perfectly and the gasket seals it
