Quads - The Most Common Double Bass Fill

If you have a double pedal you probably have at least tried to play this fill. Doing it poorly or overusing it makes you look pretty lame, I even mess it up a bit in this video, but a few good ones sprinkled into your playing can sound pretty tight and its a go-to skill for the big loud noise-making moments at the end of songs or the height of a drum fill... without actually requiring much ability.

The sticking patterns are RLKK and LRKK. Nobody ever mentions this, but Quads are simply paradiddles with the diddles played on the kick.

Larry Casteel that’s one way to look at it, but it’s also debatable. I’m alternating between the sticking at random but my pattern at one point is like: LRKk RLKk where the lowercase k is left kick and uppercase K is right kick. So technically LRRL RLRL. But the first example is all RLKk RLKk or RLRL RLRL just singles. Next example is all LRKk LRKk or LRRL LRRL. None of those looks like a typical paradiddle sticking. Now, you could play RLKK and then LRkk using essentially single bass double strokes and get something that truly resembles a paradiddle... or a lot of single kick guys will always do right kick RLKK LRKK or LRRR RLRR. many options. So I guess my point is that it could be paradiddles, sure, but doesn’t have to be. The essence of the true double kick quad is just that it is 2 hands 2 feet. And like I say in the video it could also start with the feet and go backwards.

If it were a paradiddle, the diddle would be played with a single foot and not with both. It's para-para, R-L-Rk-Lk or L-R-Lk-Rk or L-R-Rk-Lk

I totally agree in the sense that these fills are kinda like a magic trick; once you get the hang of them and can do them second-nature they’re perceived as WAYYY more virtuosic than they really are, lol. not sure why but I think it’s the rapid sequence of strokes. like I always thought those Bonham triplets would be like IMPOSSIBLE to learn cuz they sound so advanced and perfectly executed at just the right spot (which they are) but they’re really pretty easy for any intermediate-advanced drummer to master.

Quads are one of those fills that sound really hard and impressive to the audience but actually is pretty easy! It might be hard in the beginning but after just a little practice it is really not hard

I don’t know I think Quadruples are an excellent technique which takes a fair amount of coordination and effort. Just because a movement comes easy or sounds full it’s not a bad thing

Derek Landin nothing wrong with it but any simple pattern gets old if you don’t mix it up. I’ve used this type of fill on records and at shows, but not every fill in every song. I’ve seen and heard people who pretty much do it every single time which I think is a bit excessive.

It’s in thousands easily. Not pop songs, but any kind of heavier music usually has some on any given album.
