This is a beautiful presentation about starting a business and I'm 66 years young and this is right up my alley, I'm still employed, will call it quits when I'm 70, but I have 36 acres and will be raising honey bees, rabbits and now quail, love your presentation

Great advice! Wish we would have heard this a year ago, "build customer base first". By far the toughest aspect we faced and still continue to work on every day.

This is the same challenge for any small business. Marketing and building a reliable and consistent customer base is the main reason why most of them fail. Doesn’t matter if you are a farmer, baker, or restaurant owner. The true magic is in being a good people person and making it work against the odds!

Great start for your new advice section. I wanted quail for about 2 years, but my sister was not on board. Finally I just bought 40 pullets at an auction, lost 2 in the transition. After about 24 escaped (latch got left undone??), left with 32 (captured most over time). I butchered out 8 myself (took me 1hr 30 min), something I had never done before. I know now I need better quality (to get bigger quail) but I can see myself doing this with the right information and support. And yes, we had them for dinner recently. Lol I will be watching. Thanks

Spot on advice. This is exactly how I started a commercial beekeeping business. I built from within. And when when I needed a large increase I bought hives to cover the increase. I’ve had people ask me “ what number should I start at”. I tell them start where you are at. Even if that’s one hive. You can’t get started if you don’t start somewhere. This video reminded me to follow my own advice. Thank you Zack for your time.

Raising Quail is definitely a LIFESTYLE! EVERY DAY, stuff to do and get done, and NO vacation, unless you trust someone with you're business. Agree completely on having customers and great marketing BEFORE getting in over your head! Luckily, I have been fortunate in creating accounts while I went a little crazy. I also recommend finding a color or variety you love and raising the best. Quality is key!

Thanks for the video! I’m looking forward to this series! You know my daughter has been asking to start a business. We just need a plan before we kick it off. We sold nearly all of our jumbos. So, I’ve learned a bit about the local market. It’s probably time to build another cage for our “customers.” I liked the part about taking care of the birds for them, they are not yours. That mentality will also help my daughter part with them.

Fantastic starter video for what promises to be a fantastic series of videos!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us Zack!! My wife and I are growing these quail for our own self sustainability first and foremost. Since we started our journey a little over a year ago (it started with your jumbo wild eggs by the way), we've been surprised by the interest in our project from family, friends, and neighbors. It's very exciting to see all the people around us that are more and more interested in buying our eggs and meat, as well as looking to start raising their own, instead of chickens. Many people wanted to raise something for themselves but were put off by the challenges they faced with chickens. After seeing our system and how simple we keep things, raising quail seems to be a much better fit for their plans. Your series on "Quail for profit" may be a very useful tool for us as we look at how, & if, we want to grow larger going forward!!!!

I see it as I'm saving money on eggs and poultry. I would have to move to a more livestock friendly area to sell to strangers. Neighbors or those we know are the only ones I could sell to. Gardening , canning, dehydrating and always looking for free firewood sucks up time almost year round. Today's supposed to be hatch day. Waiting to see the new gray and whites. Nothing yet.
