Often at Tournaments, the lowest graphical setting is used to help eliminate latency. What you are mistaking for cell-shading is actual just "smudgy" graphics due to low pixel count.

this was the best final ive seen yet - strenx has improved a lot but so has rapha. SPOILER: loved strenx's comeback streak on the last map - you can notice that he is rapidly chasing down rapha while still controlling the items. that takes a lot of discipline in addition to the skill... still i think there are situations where he overestimates the importance of his aim.

Well there are some settings, that really help you as a beginner, f.e. to control your weapons with hotkey, not with the mousewheel, or to set the graphics on poor, which really helps your concentration on the enemy. A high FOV is also very important. What I noticed when I first played QL, was that people were moving so much faster than me -> It was strafe jumping, and for me this is the most important thing you have to learn when you start. It may take some time but it´s worth it. :) GL&HF

ovol1ty does that alot too.. once u memorize a map and all its spawnpoints it gets very easy to predict where the player is and exactly where to shoot

more accurately - its called using sound. Every weapon/armor/health pick up you make has a certain sound, and using that in addition to knowing the timing of when these things will respawn its generally not difficult to guestimate where your opponent will go next... this is pretty basic stuff in all arena shooters

Well I wouldn't say that. All the quakes, Unreals, Counter-Strike, Painkiller, and more recently Shootmania. It just seems the quality is declining over time

I just dled this game for the first time ever and started playing, what the hell have I been missing all these years. I did very decent at the game for the first time. I was just usually using the rocket and lighting gun, so I see theses guys are so I guees Im kinda getting the game. Anyone have any tips, thank you.

The confusion is often due to ARTS's skill abstraction mechanics. Yes, ARTS does require a lot of practice, and requires "skill" to succeed. However, it's a different set of skills. Instead of a focus on mechanical skill, ARTS focuses on meta-knowledge skill, generally the knowledge of character abilities and learning how to maximize the abstracted skill (leveling) within the game as fast as possible. Personally I enjoy Quake's "player/mechanical" skill rather than ARTS/RPG "abstracted" skill.

2GD actually has a learn2play series for quake that he does every week. check out his vods on the gdstudio twitchtv channel. (just twitch dot tv/gdstudio and look below the stream in the videos tab and look for QL learn2play) It's pretty much for people like you and me that have just started getting into quake. Learned alot from the episodes as a new person :D

That isn't true. While I agree that casual games do dominate the market, and that Quake is definitely a high-skill game, claiming that ARTS style games like Dota require no skill, or are "casual" is just completely ridiculous. They not only require knowledge of the expansive mechanics of the game, but also require a lot of training to master the many characters and skills in the game.
