Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'm from New Zealand but my husband is African-American and his grandparents were originally from the South (grandma from Louisiana and grandfather from Georgia) but moved north to New York in the early 1960s due to "tensions" (as his grandma described it) in the South at the time. His grandma, having grown up in Louisiana would regularly cook dishes such as Jambalaya, Shrimp & Grits, baked catfish, etc whenever by husband and his brother would visit them as a kids. That said, sometimes as a special treat for my husband, I'd cook him these Southern dishes as they were his childhood foods, with shrimp & grits being his favourite breakfast foods growing up.

Thanks for the video! I always did the quick grits in the microwave, but I was looking for another way to make nice creamy grits. My 9 year old wants to learn how to make grits and this would make it more fun for him and It looks like they turn out much better!

I purchased Quaker Oaks, Dixie-Lilly & Jim Dandy 5-minutes grits and had to cook them for over 1 1/2 hours (some as much at 3 hrs.) to soften. I have eaten grits all my life (74 YO) and the grits were always soften and ready to eat in 5 minutes. Why, for the last year or more, have 5 minutes grits taken so long to soften. On rare occasions a bag, from one of those manufacturers will be soft after cooking for 5 minutes, that is not the norm. Have tried to reaching out to the manufacturers to no avail. Additionally how can they advertise their grits as 5- minute grits when they, in my opinion, are not?

I’m really confused about the amount of salt I’m supposed add. First you said to add a teaspoon of salt, then I heard you say that I don’t need all that salt, so I saw you add about a half teaspoon. THEN you said use 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt. THEN you said 1/4 teaspoon of salt! WHICH IS IT?? I played that part about the salt amount over and over again, to make sure I didn’t miss anything. But I get the same confusing info every time. WHAT AM I MISSING?
@Christinesworldspice2 жыл бұрын
Add the salt to your own liking. People taste buds are different. I used 1/4 teaspoon of salt. I never use a full teaspoon for a small Pot for 1-2 servings. If your making a medium size pot that serves 3-4 people I would recommend using a full teaspoon. It is okay to add salt to your bowl instead of the pot so you can taste it as you add the salt.

Wait!🤦🏽♀️ shouldn’t you wait for the water to boil? If they’re QUICK grits why do you stir so much? I’m confused. How long did you cook yours? Ok nice job. I’m sticking to OLD FASHIONED GRITS.
@Christinesworldspice2 жыл бұрын
You can cook grits anyway you want. I add my grits before boiling the water because even though these are instant grits they do not become creamy in 5 minutes! They are still hard. I stir my grits to keep them from sticking to the pan and to be sure they are creamy not undercooked and hard to chew. I don’t know about you but I like my grits cooked right or I won’t eat them.

Try adding just a pinch every minute and taste it. If it’s not enough salt just keep adding a pinch of salt. If you’re adding bacon you have to keep in mind that it’s salty too. It just depends on how much you’re making it. Also, try to add a pinch of black pepper with the salt and it will even it out.
