True. Ever since I passed my exam more than 10 years ago, I'm more and more amazed by the difference of what they wanted us to do then and the real world driving. It's more about predicting what the others will do, so you can stay safe and also get to where you want to be at a quick pace, instead of "oh, I need to stop to a zero at a stop sign or I fail my exam".

@@Orion3T Exactly my point. The fact that not stopping behind the stop line is a violation is one of the absurd violations that nobody follows and for a reason. You need to stop in a such way where you have visibility over the road, while not posing danger for the passing cars and this place is rarely the stop line.

They key takeaway for anyone watching these videos is that you are not being assessed to see if you are a good operator of the vehicle, you are being assessed to see if you are a safe and legal driver. You can have very rudimentary skills and still pass with no faults or you can having amazing operational control over the vehicle and still fail with a ton of faults.

She’s clearly being taught to pull off with just the clutch only, hence why she holds her foot on the break and slowly releases the clutch with no acceleration causing the petrol car to stall. Unfortunately, so many examiners teach this way which then proves issues if learners then go onto buy a petrol car.

Can understand Izzy's dilemma. Some car's I tried got that electronic hand brake where its just a small button you pull up to engage the park brake . The positives, it automatically disengages when you hit a certain RPM in the car. The negative and needs getting used to is when you have to use that on a Hill. You have to be able to get to the biting point and give it gas immediately specially on a petrol car so you won't roll back and so you won't stall. And that e-brake will disengage as soon as you hit the right revs, even if you are not on the biting point of the clutch. And if you are not on the biting point, car just revs, disengages the e-brake automatically and the car rolling back.
@jb078111 ай бұрын
My instructors e brake worked differently. As I got the biting point it released, I could freely set as much gas as I wanted but it wouldn’t release until I found the bite point. Even did a little sound as it released it so you knew

This is nothing against Izzy who did a great job under the conditions, but the fact that he passed her simply because of the situation is a massive flaw in the system. If anything happens that could be dangerous it should be a fail. What happens if the same thing happens after she has passed, but this time the light was green and they stall which causes an accident...is that really the new drivers fault or the systems fault for passing that new driver when they knew it could happen? Instant fail for hitting the curb when reverse parking....who is that going to kill? But its ok to stall on a roundabout if its clear as long as you correct it quickly, but lets say its not clear...you could kill someone. And then the guy who drives perfectly safely the whole time fails because he missed a sign hidden by a tree, but still drove safely according to the road conditions!? The way I see it I am ready to pass if I am confident enough to safely drive with my kid in the car. I would happily let Mark drive my kid, but not Izzy from this performance.
@infinite3joy Жыл бұрын
That’s why there are so many dangerous drivers. The British test also allows for too many minor faults in my opinion.
@randomsmile906411 ай бұрын
the 2 things I would say is, Izzy was driving a new car for the first time. she doesn't stall her own car. If she had a bit more time to get used to a new car i don't reckon she would of stalled. and 2nd. anyone can stall a car .. learner or not. But you are right the system is flawed world wide it seems. Seems like no country has it figured out lol.
@neilbradley308911 ай бұрын
@@randomsmile9064 yes I agree...thats why I said she did good given the situation. But her dad was also driving this car for the first time and drove it perfectly. I also know they have new driver plates which should help other drivers to prevent accidents but that wouldnt help for a side on at a roundabout. The biggest thing I'm saying is that a test is a test and saying I don't hit the curb normally this car is wider etc doesn't cut it so why should it be different with stalls or mirror checks. Both of which could potentially kill someone. It's obvious Izzy isn't quite ready yet, but the rules say she passed and her dad failed? It's worrying.
@Midnightwards66611 ай бұрын
@@neilbradley3089Mark is clearly far more skilled and experienced at both operating the vehicle and navigating the road, and I wouldn't hesitate for one second on choosing him over Izzy to drive me somewhere. With exams and even lessons, what you are ultimately tested on is not how skilled or even how safe you are, but how strictly you adhere to the DVSA guidelines in terms of things like speed, mirrors etc, then once you go out on your own you do it all your own way instead of strictly following the book. The reason Izzy passed and Mark didn't is because she was more cautious about driving "properly", not just skillfully. And that the instructor was intentionally being more harsh with the long-time qualified driver than the inexperienced learner. I think Mark did get unlucky to fail on one simple error of not seeing one sign. At least they all had a good laugh.

I don't really agree with stalling being Ok provided it doesn't affect anyone else. It's a lack of skill and it's only down to luck whether it affects someone or not. Not carrying out certain mirror checks only being a serious fault if someone was there is a bit different - if there's nobody there you can't be sure the learner wouldn't have seen someone if there had been someone to see. Like they might not be obviously looking, but they might well still be aware. With stalling, it should be either you react quickly enough or you don't. Whether there is someone behind you or not shouldn't factor into it. It's not like if there had been someone behind you wouldn't have stalled.
@Dr3Mc3Ninja11 ай бұрын
I keep my foot above the clutch pedal, it is more comfortable and means I never have to worry about my foot position. 14:18 I seriously do not understand why none of the students seem to utilise the handbrake for steep hill starts. It is the safest possible method, and easier. My car is powerful enough to do a hill start without the hand brake, but it's convenient, and it means you are forced to do proper observations. I see plenty who are just desperate to get off the hill, so they will rush into the road because they don't want to lose momentum. People forming the awful habit of only using the handbrake when parking, is why rear-ending in queues ends up so badly. Someone rear-ends you, you're probably going to startle and may release pressure from the brake pedal, sending you into the car ahead.

So many drivers do 10km over the speed limit. They only follow when they see speed cameras fr. When I was on my learners permit i felt my pace was slower than the crowd but it was in the legal speed limit. I failed my test yesterday. 2 minors and one serious 🤦🏾♀️ the examiner said it wasn’t actually my fault; the car behind me came from the right lane on a roundabout and sped in front of me.. forcing me to stop and disrupt the traffic behind me! The other cars were beeping at the driver who cut in front; they could clearly see it wasn’t my fault. It was either stop, or try and squeeze in, which would have 100% resulted in a crash 🤷🏽♀️ so it wasn’t my driving, but a stranger who caused me to fail 🤬 My next test is on 14/02, and I’ll continue to watch your videos, because they were a great help in keeping my minors to a minimum (1 for clutch control on a hill, 1 for speed)
