In this video, I explain how to do a grounded theory study, and debunk 10 common myths about grounded theory. I review all key elements of grounded theory research, including the purpose and definition of grounded theory, methods of data collection, data analysis, line-by-line coding, axial, open and selective coding, theoretical sampling, constant comparison method

Thanks Dr Kriukow, I am a PGR in my second year. The first myth that you have debunked has actually taken away a very big burden from my head. You have explained it in a simple and relatable way that I was very anxious about. I though my research could benefit from GT but the thought of constructing a new theory has been haunting me. Your video is very helpful for a beginner like me. Many Thanks!!

Your explanation is great! Thank you very much for sharing this. Btw, I have read (or listened) somewhere from you that Constructivist Grounded Theory is easier to use than other approaches. Can you please explain this a little bit?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 11 ай бұрын
It is just less strict and more realistic than the older versions. E.g. it does not make the claim that you are not allowed to do any reading prior to your study , which is one of the ideas of the previous approaches. Constructivist grounded theorists , however, agree that this is simply not realistic as it is through reading that we develop a research idea in the first place. In addition, they also note that this is particularly problematic for students, who are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the literature prior to engaging in their research study

Thank you Dr. I have a question, which goes thus; I saw a research report with interview analysis that moved from "themes-codes" rather than "codes-themes" in thematic analysis, is this admissible?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of such thing. I mean, this depends, sometimes when you analyze the data, you do want to start with more inclusive codes, to kind of categorize your data into more general groups (e.g. according to the interview question, etc.), and then break these codes down into smaller ones. This sounds a bit like what you described, although I would still refer to these as I did, as codes, even if they are general or inclusive, rather than themes

@@qualitativeresearcher Thank you very much for your response. This shows the report was faulty as I thought. I learnt a few thing again with your reply. Thanks for making this video. I am planning to use GT for my research and was super scared after reading a lot of material on GT. You made it super simple and debunking the myths was icing on the cake. Can you briefly explain the difference between using GT as the methodology and using as data analysis method. when is the later used?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
Glad I could help! As a data analysis method it would just mean that the data analysis procedures are influenced by the deatiled GT approach. This can be used whenever you want, I for example use an approach in my analysis that has been strongly influenced by the detailed, line by line coding in GT. I just find it to be very useful and effective, so I use it for all my data analysis regardless of the methodology used

@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
the goal is usually to develop a "theory", or a detailed explanation of how a certain phenomenon or aspect of social world "works" - this means that more often than not, GT aims to provide a detailed understanding of a certain process rather than something fixed and stable

You mentioned that we should not use any preexisting frameworks in GT/CGT, which I understand makes sense given the goal of the approach. However, several studies have used another broad theoretical lens to define the subject matter and then applied CGT in analysing the data. I have particularly came across papers that apply lens like intersectionality, Actor-Network theory. What is your commend on that practice, please? Do you find the two aspects incommensurate with each other?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadeen, yes you can to the above - you can apply a grounded theory approach just to the data analysis, rather than use grounded theory as the overarching methodology for your study, and it seems that this is what they did in the examples you provided above

I have been reading a lot lately on grounded theory and I am a bit confused about the term "coding framework." It seems that if I use a pre-set framework, it won't be grounded theory research anymore, because the codes are not "grounded " in the data. For me, a "coding framework" would be something that I come up with during the open coding phase of my research. That would be a preliminary coding framework that later can be nuanced. Does this make any sense, or do I completely misunderstand the term?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
you are absolutely right and apologies if I said something that indicated otherwise. THe only time I talk about a coding framework is when I mean exactly what you described - the codes that You developed in the process of data analysis, NOT a pre-existing framework. The later can still be done but in studies that adopt a very deductive approach, which as you rightly pointed out, is competely the opposite to what grounded theoriests do

Dr.. Kriiukow. I plan to use grounded theory in doing interview, but I cannot get rid of what I have already known and my knowledge and my reading. May I not use grounded theory? I just wanna use thematic analysis to analyze the interview data. But how to ask questions? I am going to ask questions based on previous studies. Do you think it is OK?

I'm not sure, to be honest. Theoretically, I'm tempted to say yes, as I don't recall any official guidelines saying you Have to have interviews in a GT study, but in practice I have never seen a GT study that would Not have either interviews or focus groups in it. This may be because in GT you really have to dig very deep into the content you're investigating. When you conduct interviews, based on your analysis you can react accordingly during the subsequent interviews, ask questions based on your emerging theory, etc., which would not be possible when analyzing documents and other sources of data like this.
