This video talks about qualities of character and styles of communication that I look for in an ideal president of the United States, and in any leader in general. It is entirely non-partisan and I do not talk about any specific issues on the left-right spectrum, nor about any specific presidents or candidates.
The most important quality to me is respect. I want a president who speaks respectfully of others, ESPECIALLY others they disagree with. This includes political opponents, people within their own party they disagree with, and world leaders, including in moments of tension with those leaders.
Another related, and critically important quality is listening skills, and ability to fully understand and accurately explain the viewpoints of people who disagree with them. This is important so that they can accurately represent the viewpoints of their political opponents, and work together with these people and build a consensus around important issues.
The last quality that I discuss is that I want a president who does not exhibit "party loyalty" but rather, is committed to representing the people, to reasoning through issues independently of political biases, and to discussing and working on issues independently. Even in the cases where I strongly prefer one party over the other, I want a president for whom their party affiliation is less important, and I want one who is committed to weakening the power of the two-party system and getting us out of the us-vs-them mentality that often plagues the conflict between Democrats and Republicans in the U.S.
I hope people find this video uplifting and that it can influence future selection of candidates for the presidency, especially in primary elections!
