Personally, I would change the story of the movie, and that it would have been that the Nerd had been traumatized by the E.T. game like in the movie, but let the plot be the search for the creator of the game, and discover how difficult it was to do it at the time. That would make sense of his review of the game at the end.

That's acually a really good idea as the E.T game acually does have a fascinating development history itself. Maybe throw in the sword quest sword as well :3

It's also something that the Nerd would totally do, to try and find the creator of a game just because he hated it, and to not even be deterred when he learns that the guy is near impossible to find. There are some other recent reviews of this movie that point out how weird it is that the Nerd is filling the role of an everyman, instead of an unhinged weirdo like he is in the videos.

As a former fan and long time watcher of James; I can say this is the worst decision in his life was to shoot the movie in California to make it a ‘big budget movie’ rather than a more low-key indie film like Clerks, that really bit him in the ass as the film loses a lot of the charm that made the Nerd videos great. A simple road trip film with the Nerd and some of the characters from the web series trying to track down the mystery of the E.T. game would’ve been sound, but the direction they went with was totally off and extremely dated (even for 2012/14 standards). You can tell that the failure of the movie really affected the quality of the website and channel immediately after, leading to the Screenwave buyout. 2015-16 was pretty good for the channel, but after that, the passion left when Bootsy and Kyle left.

What made AVGN work was that the nerd almost treated the game like another person, as if TMNT on the NES was a horrible criminal and he was interrogating and punishing it on their awful actions. It took something that is technically meaningless, and gave it the fiery frustration we all felt as kids, as if we had been stabbed in the back. The movie doesn't have any of that

Honestly, I understand why Mike isn't in it. If the movie was about James Rolfe, the filmmaker who stars and makes the AVGN videos, Mike should be in it, since he drew the title cards, recorded a good amount of the actual game play, and acted as multiple characters throughout the show. But it's not. In universe, Mike does not exist. AVGN even referenced it when he played the official AVGN game that he doesn't know anyone named Mike. In universe, he actually was attacked by The Joker, Jason, and Bugs Bunny.

Also, Mike never wanted to help on the videos, it was just that James couldn't get anyone else early on. I wonder if this happened because James was really picky about what kind of help he wanted, because it seems like that's the big change that happened in the Screenwave era, he decided that all he needed were some warm bodies to help him with his videos and his band.

The Lady Emily video about the AVGN said it best when she said “James is not your friend.” There’s still a lot of people out there who seen so much of his work that they subconsciously act as if they know him personally and are afraid to give any criticism that they feel might be hurtful. Sure the perception we get from his videos is he’s probably a cool dude you want to hang out with. But in this day in age there have been countless examples of people who have an online persona that appears to be in one thing and then in real life they’re quite the opposite. I’ve watched and enjoyed a lot of the AVGN videos but I’m not afraid to say this movie put me to sleep the one time I watched and his band which includes some useless blob on “backing vocals” is mediocre at best. James like everybody else has flaws. Exhibit A: His affiliation with Screenwave. He’s human like everybody else and that means there will be failures and triumphs.

@@Thomasmemoryscentral I couldn’t agree more. And what’s sad is he knows better…at least I’d like to think so. Maybe he’s one of those people who can’t say no and gets taken advantage of. James has his place in KZbin history, who really benefits from the whole Screenwave deal? They get to ride off his visibility on the platform and get protected by his good name because of course when they screw up he’s gonna be the PR face that fixes the mess. Meanwhile he gets dragged down. A few years ago seeing videos that put AVGN in a negative light were almost blasphemous on this platform. Its not a good movie. But James had fun making it. It's HIS movie. He made it how he wanted to make it. I respect it and enjoy it as a goofy extended episode of AVGN. People should look at it through the perspective of James. It's pretty charming. If you follow the Nerd as often as I do. He's gone on record saying so many times, that AVGN is something he's doing to have fun, he keeps trying and doing new things to keep it fun. Making KZbin videos is fun for him, and it's cruel to spoil somebody having harmless fun. I respect the Nerd, I love James' content. He's an inspiration to us all. I loved his content since I discovered him in 2013. He's always been charming to me. The variety is excellent. Fear & Loathing is one of my favorites of his because of how unique it was.

It's always a good sign hen the biggest controversies for an internet celebrity are either non-issues like the Ghostbusters controversy, plagiarism without sources which lies both with James and the unnamed writer (the writer for doing it and James for not checking) and blasé content. Part of this is that James is his own boss and is the executive producer of Cinemassacre. He doesn't have a Mike Michaud-like scumbag breathing down his neck. Unlike Doug, he can and has branched out beyond The Blasé Video Game Nerd.

I do not consider Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie to be a bad film. And it's for one simple reason: it makes me happy to watch it. It's not exactly a life-changing experience, but I appreciate that it exists at all. Whatever the content of the film may be, one cannot deny that... he did it. James Rolfe made a film filled with all of the things he loves. He MADE this movie. His passion project came to life. And that's inspiring to me. That I, someday, can create something I have dreamed of making.

There was NO REASON to shoot this movie in LA. He could have made this movie anywhere else and probably still had a budget before the cameras rolled. People who worked on the film have said that things were pretty incompetent. James was said to be somewhat distant, and always agreed with whatever changes were made, regardless if it fit his vision or not. Kevin Finn was originally credited as a producer, and was there to be a friend for James, but it was said that he apparently took over when it became clear that James had no idea what he was doing. It was also said that the budget was one of the film’s biggest issues, as it was nearly gone by the time they had started filming. That probably explains why none of the extras were paid for their time, and at most received a free lunch and a signed autograph from James. I’m willing to bet that they probably blew at least 3/4 of the budget just on the locations alone. James had it wrong all along. “Hollywood, that’s where movies are made”. Yeah, that was true at some point, but nowadays, that’s where movies “used to” be made.

He co-wrote and co-directed it, and the episodes it fits best with are the ones with the Ninja Gaiden ninja and the Glitch Gremlin, both characters played by Kevin Finn that lean heavily on stereotype humor. Kevin also seems to love Hollywood and worked there even before the movie, while James later expressed regrets about making the movie there because it made the movie cost much more than necessary.

Yeah, you bring PewDiePie and Logan Paul as examples of people getting attention that the movie doesn't match, but the point of someone being famous online and irrelevant outside of it is very much a common thing even to this day. And the aspect of doing online work AND working a 9-5 job isn't crazy either, there are people like SomeOrdinaryGamers who have both online and offline work. 2. "The movie adds so many elements because it's probably the only time they're gonna be able to make a movie" This one is a little tricky because only James knows 100% what was on his mind when writing this, but that idea makes no sense to me, especially when we're talking about a person that has claimed to be more into films than games. If you have so many ideas for cinematic projects...why not focus on the one or couple that will make the movie go from point A to point B, so you can then make more budget and then create a series of films so you can build your career a lot more? Of course there's the argument of the culture at the time being against the idea of crowdfunding, so if we go through that, why not do something like Fantasia where you have serveral projects in one package, to show what you can do as a film maker. That way you can have all of your ideas made in different isolated stories, instead of forcing them all into ONE plot. Because the idea of a game turning people into zombies can be quite perfect for a 15 minute short film. 3. Everyone will do and act according to what the nerd says, because they can't think for themselves I don't think i need to mention how accurate that is, especially in hindsight with people being even more into the behaviour of acting like sheep and only caring about what reviewers, critics and vloggers say about any kind of product.

James will never break free from the boundaries of the Nerd or low budget KZbin content. 1/2 l due to Ego and overambition and 1/2 due to lack of self awareness (Behind the Scenes video), awkwardness, and introversion. AVGN popped off because it reflected what was on the minds of millions of people who grew up with Cr*ppy games; while the film was 1000% what James what wanted to see (at least concept and intention-wise) - and James at his core is a Nerd. Definition of a Nerd: A person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest (Retro Nintendo Games, Board Games, Old Monster Movies, Godzilla). Maybe next lifetime James. Also, he really should of shot his film in his home state. It would’ve saved 2/3 of the films budget and even rural states (Utah for instance) would’ve offered a film grant which would’ve buffed the budget by at least a 1/5th.

Regarding the sexism, my wife and I and some friends watched this film a few years ago. My wife isn't a dramatic or thin-skinned woman by any means, but she was actually wincing at some of Mandy's and the other woman's lines or lines that were spoken to/about them. Also, neither of us nor our friends we were watching it with laughed once, and a couple of people left early because it was getting late and they didn't care about this inept, boring movie.

James Rolfe seems far more a movie nerd and a *retro* gaming fan, so I almost think at least at the time of production, he was genuinely and unironically out of touch with modern perceptions of the gaming industry like the issues with FPS in the late 2000s and motion control push in the early 2010s

It's got the nerd, a retro game, and a sketch surrounding it, except it's had a lot of effort put into it because of its status as a milestone achievement. The biggest problem with the avgn character and series is that you can't really make it last 1hour+10 minutes without major pacing issues or make the script super convoluted. The Movie should have started with him reviewing ET like every other episode, but halfway through the review, he snaps and leaves the basement. Credits roll as he drives to New Mexico. Written and directed by James Rolfe Instead of the confusing storyline about the aliens and area 51 it's just a simple road trip story. The whole movie is just James, kidnapping HSW and planning on locking him up in his basement and showing him the game and how much agony he caused. Have a cameo with Mike working the counter at a bar and he winds up in the car. Kyle also joins as a drifter with a guitar and give the 3 some entertainment. The Whole movie could have been filmed with the four of them in the car, maybe throw in a planes trains and automobiles or mad mad world reference, show James taking him to the Atari building, the landfill, and all this time they're being chased by a lone police cruiser. during the last 15 minutes of the movie he finishes ET and screams in HSW's face telling him how it ruined his life. However HSW Finally snaps at James saying "you had to play it? Boo fucking hoo, I had to create it in 3 days, you think I like being blamed for the videogame crash and bankrupting Atari? I tried my best yada yada" and the nerd has a revelation that it's easy to shit on games because it's plastic, but back then, it was really hard to make games, and people poured their hearts into making them and that in his reviews, he's essentially shitting on other people's dreams. Nerd lets him go at a bus station, starts driving home, sirens hit, its the lone police car, pulls over, there's a knock at the window rolls down... It's Officer fuckin Bootsy "Hey guys! Wanna play Cops and Robbers!?" Nerd, Mike, and Kyle just sit in the car and yell "mother Fucker !" At the same time

Oh man, I can't wait to see you tackle the Channel Awesome movies. I feel that a lot of the points you make about AVGN hold true for Nostalgia Critic. Doug Walker feels like he really wants to make movies, which in my opinion led to the downfall of the actual series as more and more episodes were unnecessarily padded with acted segments. For one thing it completely explains his review of The Wall, one of his most infamous videos. This is before even getting into the massive amounts of drama behind the scenes, both during production and within the company itself. Expecting covering this to be a full series tbh.

I think I said this on the Cinemassacre backlash video... the thing about AVGN is that it's a concept from the early days of KZbin. It's limited in that way, James playing a character that he appears to be tired of to some degree and uses to pay the bills (the man has a family, more important than KZbin, contrary to that subreddit's belief). However, I must say, the latest episode was really good - pretty clear he wrote it himself rather than letting Screenwave do it. As said, James was never a gamer, but he's kind of stuck in this character with this big audience and its limited concept. When it comes to the movie, at least it was something he wanted to do and could have fun with. Much of the more recent content on the channel did not feel like that. Doesn't make it any more quality than that stuff, but eh. On the plus side, no matter what you think of AVGN or anything else going on, at least James never became Channel Awesome or any of the other content creators who turned out to be gross.

How do you nerf pvp? I actually once played a game that did this. Explanation: pvp would use up item durability and ammo/healing items so it wasn't just free to do for fun. However after each match, both the winner and loser would receive useful items, the winner receiving more of them. Thus you'd constantly see people farming PvP even ones who disliked it. However the people running it changed the loot from pvp matches to useless crap nobody needed or wanted, and pvp matches almost entirely ceased. THAT is how you nerf pvp.

There's more to the story, but this is what i can recall out of the bat because its been almost a decade ago.

Very well analyzed. Wasn’t Freddy Got Fingered an allegory for how Tom Green was wasting the movie studio’s money? I wasn’t much of a Tom Green fan but yet after seeing the trailer for the movie my teenage self was moved enough to go to the movies the first night it played. And watching my friend squirm in horror, trying to hold back puke while Tom Green swung a newborn baby around by its umbilical cord nearly brought me to tears as I laughed hysterically. It’s such a weird film to me because mood dictates whether or not I enjoy it upon rewatches. One time I watched it and didn’t laugh once and then another time I sat there cracking up at it’s “fuck sentimentality” attitude. There’s certainly a “I shouldn’t be laughing at this” kinda vibe that goes throughout the film but watching that kid get hit by a baseball is funny dammit! And his realistic scream and crying just shows that not all child actors suck! It being a satire of the kind of movies Hollywood was pumping out at the time certainly was a rallying cry to my younger self because I thought those movies blew! A bunch of pandering garbage screen tested for my supposed demographic. Hollywood just assumed I want to see someone fuck a pie.

Because simply as a movie/story experience it’s absolutely stupid. The dialogue is childish, it’s narrative is nearly incoherent and I’m sure the first time a movie studio executive seen the script they thought they just read the ramblings of a sociopath. Who thinks of taking roadkill and grabbing a knife to cut it open and put themselves inside of its skin?! It amazes me Freddy Got Fingered got funding to this very day. And it’s damn impressive a movie so bad can have so many unforgettable scenes. Whether remembering those scenes is considered a good thing I’ll leave to the viewer’s discretion.
