Thanks a lot for following my tip. Armel has more plans for improvement, but since the current version of his firmware uses up almost every byte of the flash memory, he will have to do away with built-in features. FM broadcast seems to be at the top of the list for a 3.0 version. He already has removed some obscure, little-used features like the flashing flashlight to free some space. Numerous bugs have been corrected, too. His firmware is open-source, just like Egzumer's.

Thank you for the tip. It's good stuff. I understand the memory limitation, but FM broadcast monitoring is important to me, as I don't really want to carry more radios. The bottom line is to receive as many frequencies in as many modes as possible, and to be able to transmit on as many ham bands as possible as well. After that comes the features. For instance, I don't really have to have 2 different S meters. I prefer the mods Armel has made to the classic. No need to waste mem on 2 of them. In fact, an S meter isn't really essential at all if there is another useful feature that can be put in its place. I can guess at the signal report info about as well as my uncalibrated HT display produces. Signal reports are left over from the days of big base-stations, log-books, QSL cards, and some of the contests. Sis reports on HT's are essentially meaningless. Having said all that, I wonder about the possibility of upgrading the internal memory. A lot of us can desolder and replace onboard mem chips. Having twice the room for code would make everyone happy. And of course as soon as the manufacturers see hams doing that mod they would start selling HT's with the expanded memory storage so no one would need to swap chips.

I bought my radio thinking that even if it was a flop, it wasn't an expensive flop. So far, I am having more fun than I thought would be possible for $30 USD (including shipping, tax, etc.). I can't figure out which firmware I want to try...like a kid in a candy store! This one is a strong contender right now. Your videos are very helpful!!!

i tried others, this is the one i kept on all 3 of my k5's. egz is nice , the am fix is great for Airband listening, but the radio would glitch out on 2 meter tx for some strange reason screen would do strange stuff like washout or just not tx , ijv for some reason would not pick up air band at all even using my outside antenna . so far this version works flawlessly and i have not found any glitches. hope that helps

Armel’s tweaked Egzumer firmware is without doubt the best out there atm, 2.6 is basically the same with a few tweaks. Excellent video Ben

I tried this firmware for a couple if week and found it very stable but went back to Kamilsss firmware as I missed the spectrum speed scanning feature and I found the items on the display quite hard to read, may be you should demonstrate the Kamilsss firmware Ben

What is "spectrum speed scanning feature"? I've tried the Kamilsss firmware but didn't find that. The regular frequency scan (long press *) works at the same speed as it does in F4HWN, and both of them have the band scope functionality (f+5).

@@user-ml3sz3mm5y in VFO mode set the A and B to set your scan range for example 144.000 in A and 148.000 in B then long press button 5 this will now show the frequency the radio will be scanning, press button F then button 5 again and you are in spectrum scanning use F and * to adjust your squelch threshold, to blacklist (miss out) frequencies push the button below the ptt it is easy once you get the hang of it

You should do a K5 tutorial on how to set up a repeater, from beginners level. A lot of people don't know what all the settings mean.

From the features and easy to use perspective, this one is the best so far. But I feel the reception little bit weak compared to another firmware, even with another egzumer fork like Kamilss NuNu I used before. The sql seems the problem, I have intermittent sql open with this FW and no problem with another FW on same repeater. But when I open the monitor function the signal is strong. Sorry for bad English

Are you finding your K5 battery doesn't last so long? Have you done any battery upgrades?

Only real way to upgrade the battery in a simple way is to buy an UV-5R Plus, take it's 2200MhA battery and cut the notch on top of it to make it fit on all models. Other than that I found a 3D Printed battery pack from the IJV firmware website.

Unfortunately this radio is not capable of transmission on 27Mhz with any firmware.

I don't get this 1Watt setting. The radio default is around 3 tot 4 Watt. So does this setting mean that 1Watt is the max transmit power after installing this Mod?

No, that's just setting the low power output level. So High will still be say 4w, mid 2.5w and low, whatever you set in the menu from 1w down to 20mw.

I believe you go in to the hidden menu PTT and button below and switch on there is the disable TX in there

@@petercarter9034 yeah your right but id like to see a shortcut for that, like if you could program one of the side buttons to disable ptt. I carry my radio everywhere with me and sometimes the ptt gets jammed on when im driving and gets stuck between the seats or whatever. It would be nice to be able to toggle tx on or off quickly without having to go into the menu all the time. Also those times you forget to enable it and you want to reply to a call, you’ve then got to switch the radio off and go through the procedure of holding buttons. Its the one feature im looking for on this radio but not one firmware seems to have at the moment.

Nerdy question but..... Why no Channel Names on display?

That is displaying name so all the repeaters etc show the name etc but I've named all the 2m & 70cms simplex channels with the frequencies with the exception of 2m APRS and 2m SSTV. Thanks for watching 👍
