Google how many quantum computers exist and how many are in use. Something doesn't quite line up.
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
There is no well-known answer to this because of the increasing number of companies and research labs creating quantum computers. The number of them is probably at least doubling every year. There are already several dozen different quantum processor designs from various companies based on at least two (maybe three or four?) different technologies for building them. Microsoft’s Azure cloud service makes quantum computers available from four different manufacturers.
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
Also, how many quantum computers exist today isn’t the point. The growth will be increasingly explosive as developers and researchers continue to figure out the best ways to exploit quantum computing. There are several areas in which case studies are showing tremendous value from quantum computing, including generative AI, machine learning, cryptography, drug discovery, and material science. We’ve moved beyond “if” and are working on “when”, “where”, and “how”.
@Hello-pl2qeАй бұрын
@TheDeacon-z9m Okay, of course quantum computing will be valuable one day but a bunch of no name companies claiming they are at the forefront of it most likely will not be.
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
@@Hello-pl2qe There are multiple fronts along which quantum tech is being developed, and most companies do not work on all of them (I don't know that even IBM does). There are also the patents being filed, which at some point force some companies to be acquired even if they do not have much revenue. I would also be careful about assuming these companies will all fail. Most disruptive tech is developed by smaller companies, not large ones. If the tech proves sufficiently valuable, they either become "name" companies or get acquired by them. Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and even stodgy old IBM were once no-name companies. Where are they now? Also, the most valuable company in the world right now is Nvidia, certainly not IBM.

No IONQ is a big spoof. There trapped ion technology is 1 dimensional, so they failed and tried to diversify in developing algorithms and providing consultancy services. They are not at all involved in any quantum computing.. they are using Nvidia chipesets for goodness sake...
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
@@MrZealot1Your claims do not match what I’m reading about IONQ in recent months. They are continuing to advance and produce quantum processors, but they are integrating chips from Nvidia to support hybrid quantum computing (both conventional and quantum computers used in cooperation to solve problems, since each excels at different aspects of computing). They are providing those other services to support their customers in developing quantum apps. Other quantum companies are doing the same to help increase quantum adoption and hardware sales.

2050? That's how ridiculous people are thinking about quantum computing - it'll never happen because you can't write software for it. AI is nothing but s buzz word and way for Corporate America says you're being fired for AI. You won't be able to go down to Best Buy and ever buy a quantum laptop or computer - both are good ways to waste your money in the stock market. Kind of like pharmaceuticals and passenger aircraft.
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
You simply misunderstand how quantum computing is being used. It isn’t a direct replacement for conventional computers, but rather it excels in several sub-areas. It has trouble with wholly deterministic algorithms due to tendency to produce noise in the results. However, there are areas of less precise computation where it can provide tremendous scale, speed, and power savings. These include generative AI, data generation for machine learning systems training/testing, simulation studies (such as drug discovery and material science), etc. Quantum computers are now available on some cloud services, and there multiple software libraries out there that support them. In the future there may be sufficiently broad need for them that it would make sense to create laptops that embed a quantum computer within a conventional one, but we’re not there yet. The cost would need to come down, and only some quantum technologies can operate at room temperature (rather than the massive cooling that others require).
@c123bthunderpigАй бұрын
@TheDeacon-z9m Nice text book answer, in other words its a waste of time and money and won't be available for two generations, there is no way to partially use quantum physics, its all or none, and won't produce any consistent performaning products for commercial or consumer products for two generations until the principle of entanglement can be replicated. Its primarily use today is to get funding for tenured professors and their lab lackeys.
@underratedblastoise3908Ай бұрын
can you buy a data center at Best Buy?
@TheDeacon-z9mАй бұрын
@@c123bthunderpig Your understanding of the state of QC appears to be lagging a bit. Many companies are working on commercial apps and R&D, including hybrid approaches to computation (quantum and conventional computers are both used to work on different parts of a problem in cooperation). Both Microsoft and Amazon cloud services provide access to quantum computers from multiple manufacturers. There is support for quantum software libraries in multiple programming languages. Additionally, just today Amazon announced its Quantum Embark program to help customers prepare transition to quantum computing. This includes use-case discovery workshops, a hands-on workshop working with quantum programming environments, etc. For another viewpoint, I’d check out IONQ and see what their business growth and technology story looks like. They have $37 million in trailing 12-month sales, and are estimated by analysts to do over $80 million next year. That’s not chicken feed, and it’s all about ramping up for enterprise-level QC apps.
