Germany actually had a port in China, it was Qingdao.
@tyleron1305 Жыл бұрын
And the first thing they did with it is, of course, beer
@HEEHEEBOII Жыл бұрын
Not only Qingdao, but also Weihai aka Way High as the Americans called it. They also held for a short time Dalian, but it was returned to China after. Additionally, you see much more German influence in Weihai than Qingdao, although Qingdao is the most well known since the beer brand - Qingdao Brewing Co. was started by Germans called the Anglo-German Brewery Co. For what it's worth, the Germans were by far the "nicest" colonizers to China compared to the British, and Japanese. Which is ironic consider what happened in WWII and what they did in Africa. Even the Imperial Qing Chinese Navy at the time received massive amount of help from Germany. Which included, buying German built ships, and receiving modern navy training from German advisors. Had there been no defections during the first sino-japanese war, China would've won the naval engagement considering they had I believe 4 modern class battle ships built by the Germans which outgunned and outclassed the Japanese ships at the time.

@@HEEHEEBOIIAs far as I recall, all the way up until and through WW1, Germany was fairly "nice" to it's African colonies as well. When it comes to charter companies diplomatic reputation matters a lot along with trust. So diplomatic ideas are actually better than trade ideas. Every diplo rep is +2 reasons, every point of trust is +1 reason. An alliance is +50. So an alliance, full trust, and 5 diplo rep is +110 reasons.

@QuarbitGaming that could be fixed with a supply demand system rather than percentage increase per each node travelled. Like choosing one node to sell a good, and the demand in that node determines the profits. Selling Spices in india would get you chump change while in Europe it could get you rich

Tho, Portugal was the only European nation that didn't forcibly colonized China. Macao was leased to them through diplomacy unlike the Brutal take over like the English and Germans. The Ming leased the port city to the Portuguese Jesuits back in 1557. And was hoping to set up a city as a window to the Western World for trade and tech exchange. The Qing continued this policy even before the Age of Humiliation. The agreement even lasted all the way to the Republican and Maoist Era. In fact, in the 40s, Portugal was one of the few surviving Fascist Regimes in Europe ruled by the Estada Novo Party. Funny nuff, the whole Iberian Subcontinent was the last surviving fascist stronghold which house the Spanish Franco and Estado Novo regime. And they survive by the merit of not joining the Axis in WW2. The regime presented themselves as a benevolent colonisers unlike the English and the French, and wished to incorporate all their colonies as official Portuguese territories. However, the natives of those colonies didnt take it kindly. Portuguese African territories immediately rise up in armed rebellion. That somehow the Portuguese army cant suppress. And to make things worse, the Indians recently granted independence from the British, purchased fleets of Soviet Tanks, and completely sweeped Portuguese occupied Goa in mere days. All these doesn't fair well for a Fascist regime that keeps a strong man branding. And China recently turned red, who defeated the same Indians in 1966 in a skirmish recently. The Fascist Portuguese knew if Mao decided to steamroll them just like the Indians over Macao, their legitimacy will crumble immediately. And there were already riots and demonstrations by reunification agitators that a deeply underpaid, demotivated and corrupt Colonial Government in Macao can barely handle. So the Fascists humbled themselves, and reached out to the Communist Party of China. Few days later, the People's Liberation Army surrounded Macao. However, they only brought infantry. And they weren't facing the Portuguese Army, but to their own border. Because they were stopping the Red Guards from invading Macao and escalate the situation in Macao. If you watch Command and Conquer Generals memes, Westerners often confused a Red Guard for a proper PLA trooper. But they are not, they are independent paramilitary fanboys of Mao, most of them teenagers, who are the main driving force of the horrors of the Cultural Revolution. They went after intellectuals, suspected anti Mao counter revolutionaries. Think of them as the rioters in the French Revolution during the reign of terror. And at times, they even overpowered proper PLA Soldiers, even Xi Jinping and his family was terrorised by the Red Guards for unfounded suspicions of being "Anti Maoist". Gangs of Red Guards even went after each other at times. However their story is for another day. The Party and the Estado Novo agreed to dissuade radicals from siezing Portugal, as they want to keep a window to the Western World out of pragmatism. In fact even releasing Propaganda calling the Estada Novo "Little Imperialists not worth our time...yet" The Portuguese Governor even signed a letter of apology under a portrait of Mao. But the Colonialist sucessfully negotiated down a reclaimation from the Red Guards or the Party itself. Even if the Party doesn't have any intentions of reclaiming them anyways. Few years later, the Socialists in Portugal overthrew the Fascists, and went down a massive decolonization process, not willing to suffer humiliation the Estado Novo received from the Indians or the Africans. When they presented their intentions to the Chinese Communist Party however, the Party responded: "Macau was never a colony, China merely rented it to Portugal, and we intend to keep that agreement until expiry date of the treaty." The Portuguese Socialists were left dumbfounded and kept Macau as tenants to China. Years later, in 1999, Portugal transistioned into Democracy, and negotiated a proper deal with President Deng Xiaoping. And Macau was returned amicably. For a colonialist that was the least brutal among the long line of Colonialists China encounter such as the Japanese, Americans and British. The Portuguese rule over Macau as "renters" was a wild ride.
