Latinum, much like real-life gold (at least in monetary theory) is rare enough (and unduplicable by replicators) that it's prized by those who seek out such things, but bountiful enough in supply to serve as a universal currency. The Ferengi probably put a lot of effort into finding it.

Something just occurred to me that makes this scene even more moving: It's not just Quark realizing that his friends are his assets. It's the rest of the station- even Odo- realizing that Quark is, on balance at least, a huge asset to them all.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 Жыл бұрын
For Odo its both a case of better the devil you know and that Quark is, frankly, a worthy adversary, life would be too boring without him. For the rest it's simple, he's their barman and frankly a damned good one dispite his flaws, a good barman is hard to find. Got to remember going to Quarks is entirely a social experience, you can get drinks and food at the replomat down the corridor, or anywere basically. That he has contacts that in general can be used for the greater good also doesn't hurt, he is like Garak in that regard as far as Sisko is concerned.

Quark may be the money grubbing Ferangi he always is, but over the course of the series, he provided an invaluable service. During the Dominion War, he was the ultimate spy, a reluctant soldier, and later a breath of reality to Sisko after Nog got wounded. He presented a side to Star Trek that has yet to be redone. The civilian point of view.

Quark was the best mirror of humanity. He embodies the worst qualities of humans at first but deep down he actually has some real human qualities of empathy. Ferengi have cultural rules against Charity being accepted. When Sisko enters Quark and Rom stand in respect even in their tone how both quickly respond with speaking his rank. Broken as Quark feels, Sisko is still his Captain and he understands the respect the Federation demands of those under it. Likewise, Sisko is aware of the Rules of Acquisition and knows that Quark has to make a demand of him to save face as well as to have funds to get the bar going again. This means that Quark has an easy option to reopen as he can figure out what he needs and sisko will provide it. Not as "charity" of course... lol, but as a "storage fee" for all the material the station is keeping there. This is what makes DS9 so powerful of a show. Its not just a show about being "human", but about expressing what it is to be humane. Here you see in a single scene a dozen races coming together expressing their own reflection of values to help another race that has differing values, all the while everyone coming together in a show of mutual respect. Odo with his "gruff and annoyed" reflection of dealing with station problems. Sisko as the Federation overseer demanding a "services" of someone on his station. Bashir expressing that he can't keep payment for his services under oath. Dax passing along a gift from prior experience. Morn bringing his own chair to sit in his normal spot and waiting to be served. During everything, everyone is giving time for Quark to get his mind back together after the horrible ordeal he went through so that life can return to normal. Its not just a message of "you're the barkeep, get back to work" even though its implied. Its also a stern notice to anyone watching that "Quark is one of us and if he's here then we are here for him."

This scene was really touching beyond description. I think they were all impressed how Quark stood up for himself. They realize how brave that was of him. An easy way out for Quark would be attempting to fake his own death or attempting to kill Brunt. But openly disobeying an FCA agent? That takes a lot of courage! Or he may have forgotten the line and got caught up at the moment, but in staying in character, the director thought it was more impactful and kept it in. Sometimes the natural reactions, when kept in character, while technically an upside, are more powerful than an original scripted moment. Another such moment was in TNG when a bunch of kids came on the bridge to thank Picard, and he picked the youngest up. She had a fuzzy toy in hand when she came onto the bridge. He hand was empty when she left. It was stuck to the back of Picard's shoulder. The rest of the bridge crew struggled to not break out laughing. As scripted, the child was supposed to leave with the toy. But the crew's in-character natural reaction was just so natural that they left it in.

I don't think it was just pride, those rules are what defines his entire race. Those rules are so important to their people that its one of the rare things the Ferengi are willing to die for. When Quark steps up with the "bill" to Sisko, because Ferengi aren't supposed to accept charity. Its Quark testing out if they are doing this because they respect him or if they are just there out of pity. Does Sisko, and by extension the station, still respect him as a Ferengi. The very thing that defines his life in the end after all. Sisko accepting the bill, treating this as a task that Quark is being "hired" for shows that the answer is a wonderful YES for Quark.
