The coin's reverse depicts a fasces, symbolizing unity and strength, and an olive branch, signifying peace. A Fasces was an axe made of a large bundle of wood sticks lashed together.

It’s pretty mind-blowing how quickly places can become overgrown and reclaimed by Mother Nature. Across from my parents’ place it is nothing but woods, but it was all a farm field as recently as the 1960s. I would’ve never known until I found a stone wall around the perimeter of where the field used to be and done the research.

Boy that large medallion is amazing. Been searching the web since I first saw it. No luck yet. Interesting thing is that the busts of most figures on what I'm finding are facing left not right, so that should help narrow it down if someone could find a match. Also looks to me like "Annual Encampment" with a year designation in front of it like 34th or something. The dates at the bottom of the other side look like maybe "1896 - 1897"??? And the name like someone else mentioned: Albert, Alfred, Alanzo and Danty or Daney or Da???. Did a Find-a-Grave search and found some possibilities but nothing to be able to base an id on.
@trolltaker Жыл бұрын
I see the "Annual Encampment", too. I've found G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) stuff with "Annual Encampment" on them, but so far that isn't helping me.

I read the annual encampment and the dates you saw too. A little careful conservation and that will be a great piece.

Charlie’s medal is a GAR medal. On the front it says Department Commander at the top, 1896-1897 at the bottom. In the center is the bust of Alfred Darte. On the reverse side is the monument and cemetery of the victims of the Johnstown flood. At the top of the reverse it says 31st Annual Encampment and at the bottom it says Dept. of PA. G.A.R. It is made of bronze and would have originally had a clasp ring attached to an ornate bar, lettered in fanciful characters, DELEGATE with a Red ribbon and upper bar, on which was a view of the hall of Post 30, G. A. R., with a floreated border and a ribbon below, lettered JOHNSTOWN 1897.

That token Charlie Harley found looks to be of civil war area. The monument on the reverse looks like the state of Pennsylvania memorial in Gettysburg. They have the largest one on the battlefield. My friend and I did our civil war circle in 2013. We went to Atlanta, Chattanooga, Antietam, Harper's Ferry, and Gettysburg (150th anniversary). Great video as always. My Tuesday is not complete until watching the crew.

I think the confusing one is a type of broach that sits at the neck to hold scarves/shawls in place. If I'm correct (not an expert), the bar would sit closest to the skin with only the square being visible on the outside...kind of pinched around the cloth it would hold in place.

That monument on the token looks very very much like the unknown plot statue at Grandview in Johnstown PA. Pretty certain the top of It says _ _ th annual encampment. The obverse side with the man looks like it says commander on the right top. The last name {we assume} appears to be DA _ _ _. Maybe Alfred?? 189-something for dates. So close, yet so far! We looked for well over an hour!
