Russ I just found your channel about 3 weeks ago and I have been bing watching your videos. You do an amazing job at what you do. I love how you narrate the videos and tell everyone about what we are seeing. Your a rockstar at this stuff. The drone is also unreal. That's so cool how we get both views from the ground and the air. Quartzite looks like an awesome little oasis down there. Please dont stop with the videos. Thank you for all of your hard work, I think I can say from everyone on this channel keep up the amazing job that you are doing and I look everday now to see what's next from you.

I love storms in the desert... and floods are a bonus! The smell of desert sage and creosote bush, when it's wet, is fantastic... like the smell of pines in the forest after a rain! We need smell - o - vision

Russ, great video. I am set in Quartzsite now and experienced the storm. IT WAS WONDERFUL. Being from Texas where we have had way too much rain and flooding, it was nice to see this storm do its thing and then move on without damage. Really lovely. Your video captured all very well...Thank you.

Thanks for showing the after affects of a rainstorm in Quartzite. Has the city ever considered digging ponds to hold / retain some of that water, or is that against some law?

Kimberly Shalaby.....I used to work with a woman who eventually retired to Arizona for the winter months only. She said there is so much rock not much below surface that basements do not exist. It requires considerable expense to break up the rock, however, I notice it doesn't stop anyone from having an in ground pool.

If you are boondocking on BLM land around Quartzsite, be advised the ground can get soft when there is rain. Unless you are towing a travel trailer with a beefy 4WD truck, expect to keep your RV parked for a few days until the ground dries out and hardens before you try to move that RV or you can get stuck in the mud. Learned this the hard way.

I don't know anything about the desert. The ground is so dry why doesn't it soak up the water?
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 5 жыл бұрын
First, there is very little organic matter in the soil. It's extremely sandy with little water absorption capability. The sandy soil gets extremely dry and the spaces between the grains of sand compact so there is little room for the water to run into the soil. I have trees with water wells around the base of the trees. If I fill the water wells with water once a week, the soil will absorb water readily because there are spaces between the sand grains because the soil is still moist. A tree well will hold about 4-inches of water and that will absorb into the soil in about 10 minutes if the soil is damp. In the spring, when the soil is extremely dry because the trees only get watered once a month instead of weekly, it may take up to 20 minutes for the water to penetrate the soil. Lastly, when it rains in the desert, it is often not a gentle rain that soaks the soil over a long period of time. Instead, you may get a storm that may rain at a rate of 1-3 inches an hour - but only for 20-45 minutes. So, it's a whole lot of water on dry soil and it just runs off. Many times it's rained hard for an hour and if I go out and turn the soil over, I will find the water has only penetrated about an inch and the soil is totally dry beyond that point.
