Thanks for watching and leaving feedback! Our return trip through CA, AZ, and NM was nearly as epic. We chased freight trains in the Mojave Desert and motocamped in the Grand Canyon ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJSwmqZpoqaAhJI ), and then we took a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque, NM ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4LLcoCXaK55m7M ). It was a humbling and awesome experience to ride these little machines 10K miles around the country. We're already planning to do it again on the 2023 Scooter Cannonball Run, but we'll probably be riding our Honda PCX150's for that next adventure. The PCX's aren't that much faster, but they are more comfortable and will run longer between refills. We'll be riding and motocamping with even more friends the next time around... that's if I've done my part to c̶o̶r̶r̶u̶p̶t̶ convince more people into my moto-insanity! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What a great series. Recently bought a PCX 150 for my work commute (my first bike) and really love being uncaged for those 15 mile trips. As a former long distance runner and current recreational cyclist, I can (almost) feel the pain and accomplishment of such a great journey. Looking forward to the return trip videos.

Thanks for the support, and congrats on your PCX150! The PCX's never fail to amaze me with their efficiency and utility. If ridden conservatively, mine will return 115-125 MPG economy around town and 100-103 MPG on the freeway. I know what you mean about feeling "uncaged". I constantly crave that feeling of freedom and finding the occasional Zen out on the backroads where there is no crazy cager traffic. My mood always seems to improve when I commute to/from work by motorcycle rather than in a car... wind therapy does wonders! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Well done for the fantastic epic on the Cubs, I saw your clean down vid a couple of days ago, I get a cub was second but you did very well considering you towed all your support instead of using the van and I am sure if you pair had not towed you would have been in the top four . My trip is a bit shorter with the UK North Coast 500 but starting 450 miles away in Reading makes it the same as three of your days but I have a week to do it in.

Thanks for the feedback, William! We started our adventure with the intention of participating in the "tourist class", and we had no delusions of winning or even placing well in the results. To our surprise, we were actually doing well in the points standings for the first few days, so we tried just a bit harder to be competetive. If we take these bikes and trailers again for our 2023 Cannoball, then we will rent space on the support truck to carry our trailers during the ride days. We will carry only essential road tools and tire patch kits with us so we can travel fast and light. The trailers will haul all of our suport equipment and moto-camping gear for the trip to/from the event start and endpoints. Good luck with your UK North Coast 500 event... that sounds like a blast! Great to see Americans riding what you term "small bore" bikes. I moved to France from the UK, don't have a full bike licence and can't be arsed to take a french test. But I can ride a 125cc. So I bought a Honda Shadow. Its great, esp around these country roads where a big bike is a handful....as my friend has found out when his Yamaha Tracer fell on him...once in the woods and he was trapped for an hour and once more last Christmas when he dropped it and broke his ankle. In France a bike is a bike no matter what the cc. And many French start their driving experience with a scooter or small bike and consequently as car drivers are respectful of bikers.

I certainly can see myself following this route, however I would never keep a motorcycle throttle pinned. I would ride at a pace of 80% throttle and never allow my bike to bottom out. Rewatchng you SCBR trip. My son and I went through Chester this summer on our 300's, you went through in the nick of time. We came through on the Hwy to your left at the 26 minute mark. Much of the forest and trees after that point are gone, looks like a nuked wasteland now. I used to work at Lassen, stopped and saw some old coworkers they said it the winds turned the fire into a blow torch, leveled the place. Chester was spared but just barely. I have footage if I can ever get around to editing and posting our trip.

Wow, that's interesting to know! We wondered if the fire would continue in that direction where we rode. It was burning to the south of us that day, but you can see all of the smoke in the video. Breathing all the smoke for 10+ hours that day really sucked... burned my eyes and nose, clogged up my sinuses and chest for the next couple of days. 😉👍 --QM

That is the KipMoto SherpaX adventure trailer: kipmoto.com/pages/sherpax . The trailer is a universal application that fits almost any motorcycle, but the hitch (front hoop) portion is specific to each motorcycle fitment. I might contract KipMoto to fabricate a mounting hitch for my Honda SilverWing 600 scooter and also my Rebel 1100. Texas doesn't require registration/licensing if the trailer's gross weight is under 250 lbs. I added lighting (tail, brake, and turn signals) to a custom mounting plate at the back of the trailer to be on the safe side. The amber warning strobe that I added (STL Z3-TIR, www.speedtechlights.com/LED-Grille-Surface-Mount-Lights/z-3-tir-led-surface-mount-warning-light-head ) probably saved us from a dozen or more accidents at night. We discussed the possibility of side effects and other potential health issues due to sitting in the same position for 12+ hours/day for nearly a month straight. Is the fuel bladder in front of your seat connected to your fuel tank or are you having to stop and add gas to fuel tank?

No, that's just a jerry can that isn't plumbed into the main fuel supply. It slides out from the right side, and I have a long, curved nozzle that attaches to the filler neck for refueling. It holds about 1.3 gallons, so that doubles the little Cub's range. I primarily used my two 1.75-gal RotoPax containers during the SCBR. The central tank was used a few times for extra capacity on the long 500+ mile days just so I wouldn't need to stop at any fuel stations. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Howdy, Peter! If you're talking about the red fuel tank in the center tunnel, it's one of only two "Neil tanks" in existence! Adrian and I have the only two prototypes ever made. Our buddy, Neil, custom fabricated those tanks and mounting cradles for us before we left on this 10K-mile cross-country trip for the 2021 Scooter Cannonball Run. They hold about 1.3 gallons of fuel, but they aren't plumbed into the main fuel supply. We used them as emergency fuel supplies and as transfer tanks during our extended road trip. Petrol in the UK now costs the equivalent of US$ 9.24 per US gallon. Actual gas (in natural gas form) is now called "unaffordium" (a brand new element). The smoke that was killing your eyes was caused by hot fire retardant, as you guessed, highly toxic.

Thanks for the feedback, and greetings from the USA! The red tank in the step-through area are our "Neil" tanks. Our buddy, Neil, fabricated those tanks and mounting frames for us to have backup fuel on our adventures. They are jerry cans with ~1.3 US gallon capacity, and they aren't plumbed into the main tank... they are just auxiliary/emergency fuel. I carried fuel in my Neil tank during part of our Cannonball trip, but I didn't use it regularly because my twin Rotopax fuel containers were my primary sources. Adrian used his Neil tank daily to carry additional fuel because his No-Spill can only holds 2.5 US gal. He used the Neil tank as a holding tank and then transferred that fuel into the No-Spill for quicker refueling on the side of the road. Yep, and keep in mind that we were flogging these little 125cc air pumps at or over 5000' ASL for several days. Our little Cubs' meager 8.5 HP was down nearly 33% to ~5 HP during our summit climbs to 11K feet. We probably only had ~6 HP for most of our time in the mountains, and we were lugging a combined weight of 530+ pounds of weight up those hills! Honda builds some amazing little machines! 😉👍 --QM

The trailer tires still look new after 10K miles! They weren't dealing with very much weight (maybe 50-60 lbs total), so they will probably last for a VERY long time... or at least until dry rot takes its toll. 😉👍 --QM

I've been watching all your videos of the SCBR and am wondering what the weight of yourself and all your gear is combined? Would help give a better idea of the performance your supercub is with X amount of weight.

I touched on that a few times leading up to the SCBR and on the ride up to Maine. My riding weight is ~170 pounds with all of my gear (e.g., helmet, jacket, boots, etc). I would estimate that our average trailer + gear weight throughout the actual SCBR route was ~85 pounds. The DrySpec D38 roll bag on the rear rack (with contents) weighed 20-25 pounds. The total pack weight varied during the trip, depending on what we were carrying. Our trailers weigh ~40 pounds empty, and that includes the mounting hitch/yoke. Our Rubbermaid Action Packers were initially overloaded with ~80 pounds of gear when we started the trip, but we eventually thinned that down to ~50 pounds as the trip progressed. There were times when we carried more cargo in or on the trailers, particularly where spare tires and fuel were concerned. My total trailer weight exceded 100 lbs at times when I was carrying 3 spare tires and 2 full RotoPax containers. It didn't ride well with that much weight because the trailer's inertia and flex in the hitch became problematic in fast transitions. As long as we kept our trailer weight under ~50 pounds and all of the heavy items down low, then the trailers rarely made themselves known behind the bike. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I will probably ride the Super Cub again, but I will install a big-bore kit on it for more hill climbing ability, and I will definitely offload the trailer to a support truck so I can run faster/lighter. How is the trailer connected to allow for turns?

These are the KipMoto SherpaX trailers: kipmoto.com/pages/sherpax . The trailer is connected to the motorcycle with a hitch/hoop at the rear axle with pivot bolts that allow up/down motion. The rear of the hitch connects to a vertical center pivot at the front of the trailer itself. That pivot allows the trailer to articulate left/right up to 45 degrees around turns. The trailer leans with the motorcycle, so there is no lean or yaw motion independent of the attitude of the motorcycle. When the motorcycle leans into a corner, the trailer follows that lean angle exactly and the trailer articulates in the center to follow the same arc. For some reason these days the corners frighten me a little bit. They did not used to, but they do now at high speeds. I wonder what causes that I have not had any crashes or any problems or near misses with corners. I have no problems at all while driving a car just motorcycle. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry to hear that! Do you have any issues with vertigo or ear infections? Those could cause balance and confidence issues. Leaning into corners on a motorcycle might trigger balance issues that you don't experience in a car/truck. Otherwise, it's just a fight against the clock... time and age aren't friendly to motorcyclists. Declining vision, slowing reaction times, and declining physical fitness are all not-so-subtle cues to our self confidence and subconscious that tell us, "riding doesn't feel safe anymore." I've noticed that my confidence has been shaken somewhat since my major motorcycle accident in October 2023 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKqofYCqesqfbsk ). I've taken nearly 6 months away from riding, so my balance and "feel" for the machine has been attenuated. I'm dedicating more attention to the mechanics of riding now than I used to and I'm consciously reinterpreting what used to be "muscle memory". So, I'm taking shorter rides around town and practicing basic skills again (e.g., figure-8's, U-turns, slow maneuvering, controlled "panic" braking, speed and time-to-distance estimation, weak-side cornering, etc) to be sure that my reacctions are up to par. Howdy, Marc! I receive a lot of questions & comments on my recording configuration. My helmet and microphone setup can be seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epDPk6CCmcqhfrc . The only change since that video was the addition of the Ulanzi Vlogging case to hold the GoPro Hero and audio adapters together in a single mount. The Ulanzi case also has a slip-off rear door that is much easier to open/close than the original GoPro cage. Now the mandatory battery swap every 30-40 minutes is a simple affair. I'm still using the GoPro Hero 7 Black camera for my helmet camera. It's smaller and lighter than the Hero 8-10 models, and it works well. I will occasionally ride with my Hero 8 Black and the MAX360 for additional camera angles. The microphone is one from an old Cardo Scala G9 kit that was left over from an upgrade, and it has the requisite 3.5mm plug. The mic is plugged into the camera via the GoPro audio adapter and it's all held in place by a Ulanzi vlogging case. The microphone was the biggest surprise of this setup... it worked on the first try and it has excellent audio quality. The gauge data is recorded by the GoPro Hero7 Black camera and my Garmin GPS. I use a third-party application called GoPro Telemetry Extractor ( goprotelemetryextractor.com/ ) to generate the gauge overlays. It will work with any GPS data streams from the GoPro video files or other devices (e.g., Garmin, DJI, etc). I use Telemetry Extractor to combine my GoPro data and also the GPX files from my Garmin Zumo GPS to achieve better accuracy for some of my videos. The gauges and layouts are completely customizable, so that creates more work... but I think that the results are worth the effort. All of the editing is done in Adobe Premiere Pro, where I apply color correction and audio normalization. Adobe Premiere has audio normalization and noise reduction tools that help to improve the raw audio and remove some of the wind noise. I really wish that I had installed another camera mount on the back of the Cub facing the trailer. It would have been really cool to watch the trailer in action from behind the bike. I'm sure that we had those trailers airborne many times during our trip... especially in the Badlands over those washboards! 🤣👍 --QM

How can people that sign up to ride so far be such wimps. What do you expect traveling on scooters main nice roads the whole way.

Long-distance riding is a serious mental and physical challenge. There were lots of first-time riders who washed out early because they didn't realize how gruelling these trips can be. We lost several veteran riders to accidents and mechanical failures. Some of the roads we traveled were barely suitable for ATV's and off-road trucks, so this was no cake walk. Several locals stopped and asked us WHY the F we were out there, especially on such small bikes, because they wouldn't even take those roads with their farm trucks! 🤣 --QM
