I agree that the “beginner bike” label being placed on small bore motorcycles is annoying and usually wrong. I’m definitely not a beginner either but I like small bikes for their maneuverability in tight spaces and great fuel economy.

Agreed! I'm always trying to show new and prospective riders that they DON'T need a liter bike or something that has 100HP and goes 100+ MPH to have fun. I could ride a leafblower-powered skateboard across the country and still have fun! It's all a matter of perspective and managing expectations. The media and public opinion are biased toward the "bigger + faster = better" myth. The paid reviewers and marketing materials show professional riders/racers on closed courses doing crazy stuff that would put the average rider in the hospital, jail, or the morgue. Riding 600-lb+ adventure bikes across the Sahara Desert, rock hopping through shallow rivers, dragging knees/elbows through canyons at breakneck speeds... none of those things are a reality for 99% of riders, and they never will be. They are selling false hopes and dreams that most people will NEVER realize in terms of skill or real-world experience. So, 99% of the marketing hype is nothing more than B.S. I'd rather show people what they can ACTUALLY do with ANY bike and how to manage their expectations for a good experience. Best of all, I'm not a paid advertiser. This is done with my hard-earned cash, so I have some skin in the game! Anyhoo... that's just my $0.02. 😉👍 --QM

I’ve been a rider for 50 years. These RE 350’s have a ride very much reminiscent of the small bikes I rode in the early 70’s. I bought a Meteor last year and can say I throughly enjoy it. It’s just simple riding and a joy in the mountains of Virginia. I’m sure the Hunter will be a welcome addition to your garage.

Just picked one up, used, $3,500. The previous owner had about $5k in the bike. Only 1,100 miles. First service already done. Buying used will save you hundreds if not thousands. Drove it 75 miles to get home on small two lane Blue Highways. Some of the best 75 miles I have ridden. Wonderful bike. It has the RE bar end mirrors, windscreen, and engine guards already installed. 2023. Rebel Blue. Wonderful bike. Wonderful exhaust notes. Bike is simply wonderful, especially 3rd and 4th gear. Cruises effortlessly at 70mph in 5th gear. Absolute steal at this used price.

I sold my Husky and bought a Hunter, for the same reasons you did. I took it for a test ride, and was grinning before I left the parking lot. I'm 57, started in the dirt, age 12, a moped at 15, and lots of everything since then. I've come to prefer simple and reliable over all the other qualities of machinery, and the REs fit the bill👍

Just what i was going to.say....in Uruguay most of.rhe bikes are 125 cc , 350 cc bikes or the BAJAJ Dominar 400 cc are already considered as a medium size bikes. I have de Dominar with 140 k Miles on it and still running great and never a problem with engine. Just burn the Stator at 140 k Miles ...still running with the same original clutch that came from factory....Big Harleys i don't think Will be so reliable as this.

We do have roads like that but a few, India to be on par with the US looks like a far-cry to me, but nonetheless you are more than welcome to visit our country and be our guest.

Hi from Australia. Bought one of these in December, same colour. I love it. I'm 60 year old returning rider and agree with every thing that you have said pretty much. 3500km so far and no problems. The fuel economy gets better as the bike computer changes the fuel mix at 500. 1000. 1500. and 2000km as it runs in. I think. The RE fly screen smooths out wind buffeting too. Worth it.

I agree with you 100% concerning beginning bikes. Every time all I hear is this might be a good beginner bike. I'm 72 years old, 6 ft. And weigh 260 lb. I have had several bikes including two Harleys. So you could say a good beginner bike or a good bike for fat old men.

I totally agree. If you have an eye for it - then less is more. Simple is better than complex. Light and nimble is better than big and heavy. It doesn´t matter if it only have 20 hp - it's the way it is delivered. Thanx for bringing this video - I can SO relate to your conclusions. And I think Royal Enfield has created a world beater with the Hunter 350. Design wise it is top notch - it has the lines of a classic 60s, 70s and 80s motorcycle - a relief among all the modern StarWars designed bikes.

Nice bike, they are really fun to ride. I bought a meteor late last fall and have put 10,000 miles on it this year with absolutely no issues! the more I run that little engine the more I like it. I can't wait for a road trip video.

Thanks! I think this is the best color option becaue it's neutral and shouldn't end up look dated like some of the trendy colors. The gloss paint will also be easier to maintain than the matte finish on the "premium" options. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hi Tara, hope you're well. I'm a bit taller than you but have a mutant long body and an inseam of only 26" so I was struggling with the same issue. You don't need to buy a lower seat, the existing one can be shaved by an auto upholsterer which is what I did with pretty good success. I just searched for custom motorcycle seat Sydney, found a company called Sydney Motor Trimmers and it was done in about 2 hours. Change Sydney to wherever you live and I'd say you'll find an equivalent business in your area. This is not exactly cheap but I also upgraded the rear shocks (YSS RZ362) and ordered them 10mm shorter which dropped it a fair bit without causing the sidestand to be too long. It rides much better, didn't change the geometry and can now flatfoot (on one side) You can see my bike with the shocks and the shaved seat here: imgur dot com /a/ Vph4XKU (hopefully that works if you take out the spaces and put a real dot in. The link was removed earlier unfortunately). I've made a lot of other modifications too - indicators, tail light, fender delete, to name a few so might not look exactly like yours. Everything stock was not so much of an issue on flat road but I had struggled on steep inclines with heavy camber and had dropped my bike in that situation. These changes made a massive improvement for me. Good luck.

Standard tyres are awesome, 1700 miles on mine and wet dry and proper hustling the bike around the lanes and wearing down my foot pegs on the corners and the tyres are great so much so that i will fit the same when the time comes👍

Cool to see you riding one of these. I sat on a couple before I settled on the Trail 125. I’m a 51-year-old first-time rider and went with a smaller bike for my first. The Hunter 350 is still on my short list for a year or two from now. If I don’t lean more towards 250-300cc duel sports.

I learned to ride in my local MSF course on a Honda Grom and the Z125 Kawasaki clone of the the Grom. What's funny about that is I usually tell people that's not the best "beginner bike" despite the fact it's so small and unintmidating. The clutch on those bikes was very unforgiving and if that's the first bike you ride everything else will feel huge.

I am in my 51st year of continuous riding and I laugh at people who use the term beginner bike. I ride a 2005 HD sportster 1200cc and some people refer to it as a girls bike!😂. These people probably are fair weather riders who only ride to the closest bar. I am going to buy a RE 350 classic, which I think would really work for me. I like to do my own wrenching, and that 350 motor seems like the perfect do your own maintenance motorcycle. The other higher reving motorcycles from Japan use shim under bucket valves and they are more-involved in adjusting. Great video and safe travels on your Royal Enfield 350.😊

I check out the Hunter and the Classic 350. I loved both but I went with the Classic because the ride was a little softer and I really care most about comfort. I would have got the dapper ash myself. I ended up getting the dark stealth black Classic. Maybe I can get a Hunter as a second bike one day.

A lot of royal enfield mileage claims are in imperial gallons because it’s a popular brand in the UK. 100mpg imperial is about 83mpg American.

I'd consider downsizing to this but I'm kind of surprised the weight is so similar to the z650rs. From the numbers I'm seeing the Kawasaki only weighs around 10lbs more

Over 500 miles on my 'new' hunter in the UK. Had the same plasticy smell for 200 miles or so not to worry. Also had a small buzzing noise from the front end in high RPMs/low gear that gradually dissappeared until after first oil change (suspected overtight exhaust header bolts causing it to buzz itself loose, or heat shield vibing against exhaust). Will soon be fitting some bar risers I found from Hitchcocks that sweep back slightly as I am a taller person at barely 6'. Hope to also fit the new air filter and fuelx soon. Keep riding, hope the hntr is still bringing you joy.

G’day great video, Growing up in the 60’s my dream bike was the classis 1966 Triumph bonneville 650cc when I did get my licence in 1969 going to university all I could afford was a 130cc Rabbit scooter, but to this day that love of the classic style bike had never left me, nowdays I live most of the time now in Thailand and ride a Honda scooter and I have been giving a lot of thought to buying the Royal Enfield 350 classic in the dark red, I have already picked out the saddle bags as I plan to tour Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia by bike. Im almost envious of your weather. I have -9 with about 4 inches of snow. My Bonneville is under her tarp and likely done for the season. Great review, to my eyes, the Hunter is Royal Enfield’s best looking 350 cc machine. I’m trying to hold out for the upcoming Scram 450 because of it’s off-road capability and a little more grunt for highway riding. However, the first time I saw the Hunter I was definitely impressed and I hope you enjoy your bike. Looking forward to seeing more of it in the future.

I would also agree that simple back to basic motorcycle is somehow exciting to me, maybe because most of my best memories are on such bikes! I'm sure the seat release is behind the side cover to keep some punk from getting to it. Locked side cover because I have seen them taken also, at least it makes it not easy for them to. Last bike I had that didn't lock the seat was my 1971 Yamaha Enduro.

No setup and freight charges??? Where I live, Illinois, those fees total between $1k to 2K per bike so your bike would have been $7000 out the door here. This past spring, I bought a KTM 390 ADV bike which retails for $7400. It was close to $9500 out the door for me. I think setup and freight charges are a scam by many cycle dealers who don't disclose those fees until you purchase the bike.

This dealer (TJ's Cycle) includes the freight fees in the prices of all the bikes in their showroom. I figured that out when their "base price" of their Hunter 350 was $450 higher than other dealers (MSRP of $3999 + $450 freight/handling). Fortunately, they didn't add a bunch of bogus setup and prep fees, so my OTD price was under $5K after all the state taxes and doc fees. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I went to a RE dealer yesterday to look at a Himalayan and Scram 411. I took a look at these hunter 350’s and boy what an excellent little bike with a fit and finish that I would have never guessed it would have for its price range. If I were looking for a street only back road bike and wasn’t 6’3” 220lbs this would be on the short list for sure. Over all I went into the dealer with lower expectations on RE especially with the fit and finish of the bikes and boy was I wrong. Even the Scram 411 had a grey appearance to it. The only thing I could say without owning one is the welds on the scram aren’t real pretty on the frame but they are solid. The price you paid was also great. The 350 is $6000.00 OTD here in the PA/WV area with dealer fees and all the other nonsense.

The feel, and the sound of that engine is just beautiful! But you have to get used to the "low iddle" lol, especially if you're used to Japanese bikes... I ended up with 2 to choose from. The Royal Enfield 350 classic, and the Zontes 350GK Sporting Cafe bike... both were perfect for me. But very different bikes. I ended up getting the 350GK 2023. Very pleased and am surprised every time I take her for a ride! You can cruise, but when you need to pass a vehicle it's a rocket! It's a higher revving engine bike, and has excellent brakes, with ABS too! Besides all the other extras it comes with! 40 horses is plenty. And the big reason I went for it was in the mountain curves, or any curvey roads the suspension, and wide radial wide tubeless rims and tires are for cornering !! Very comfortable position too!! Enjoy the Hunter!! Looks like a winner my friend!😊

I've been considering the Bullet for a fuel-efficient commter. So many people have said that these are too slow for US Highways ("you'll get run over). If it'll do 60mph, it'll keep up on any Highway I need to go on. I just have to keep off the main interstate. Just because you can't zip past other vehicles like they're standing still doesn't mean you'll get "run over".

I've bought one here in France to live alongside my Harley Dyna (which for some reason I now never use...?). Because of name copyrights etc they are called HNTR here 😂 I have put the Kent performance cam and DNA air filter in it which has made some difference, but boy is it loud now with the increased induction noise!! Anyway, all in, a great bike. Which is pretty much what everyone who has one says, same as with the Classic and Meteor variants.

Isn't it funny how owners with both large- and small-displacement machines tend to use the smaller ones more often?! I'm the same with my fleet of motorcycles and scooters. I currently have 16+ machines ranging in size from 50cc scooters to 1100cc hyper-sports and cruisers. I enjoy and ride all of them, but the smaller machines are the ones that see the most road time because they are lighter and it's more fun to ride slower. THANK YOU! That’s been my pet peeve too. "Beginner’s bike”, "Starter", "Trainer", "First bike", all those little subtle throw off comments stupid article writers and reviews make. They assume everyone that would want a low powered bike like a Royal Enfield is somehow an immature unlearned kid, novice or inexperienced nincompoop. When the truth is just the opposite. The riders that want the Royal Enfield bikes know and appreciate value, safety, and future livability with their bike. They aren’t looking to abandon the joy of the road for some alter of overpowered, over expensive money pit in the name of their ego. They want to ride, work, and commute on their bikes every day. They aren’t interested in letting them become some garage Queen, that their scared to take out and get dirty or worse, scratch. Royal Enfield enthusiasts “Get It” at it’s core passion.

The J series is the finest true retro engine on the market. Air cooled, simple two valves and a breeze to maintain at home. The style is a matter of personal choice. I went for a Red and Chrome Classic but the power plants are all identical. Had a Kawasaki 900 and have to say my little 350 has way more soul, character and is hugely more fun to ride.

I love small cc bikes, had a FZ09 after owning my Grom. It was fun for a while but I missed my Grom too much. Sold it to buy my CB300R, fun bike, a bit too plasticy to my taste but did everything well. It died when I crashed into a deer la year. Next year I'm going to buy something new. I was looking at the Hunter or Meteor.

I think that those 100 mpg observations are from the UK, where they use IMPERIAL gallons-small note! An Imperial gallon is equal to 1.2 US gallons. To put it another way, a US gallon is 83.3% of an Imperial gallon, which means you should get in the low 80s for max fuel economy on your Hunter. I know, because I'm a Meteor 350 owner, and our bikes share the same engine. As for break-in, what I did was listen to how the engine sounded at about 55-60 indicated, top gear (i.e. 5th), and burned that sound into my mind. I then shifted when the RPM sounded like they did at 55-60 indicated. I tried to refrain from opening the throttle more than 2/3 to 3/4 of the way. I basically emulated the Honda break-in procedure for my old, Honda Helix scooter. I found that this technique served me well. Like you, I couldn't follow the book, either, when it came to break-in. I tried to initially, but my Meteor 350 would lug whenever I hit an incline; since I live in a hilly area, that wouldn't work. Hence, I paid attention to what the engine sounded like at 60 in 5th, then just used that aural indication/RPM level to time my shifts. Breaking in my Meteor 350 this way seems to have worked well for me. I have about 3300 miles on my bike.

Yes, you are correct! The best fuel economy that I've seen with my Hunter was around 78-82 MPG US while running freeway speeds of 65-70 mph. Unfortunately, my Hunter 350 suffered an early demise at only ~1600 miles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipawqqd7h82LeK8 . --QM

Yep, found my speedo off by about 3-4 mphs as well. Always reading higher than true mph based on GPS or those electronic signs that tell your speed as you travel by. Wouldn't rush to adjust valves, did mine at 250-300 when installing aftermarket cam and were a little tight, but fine. Its mainly exhaust to worry about burning if tight, but that one is normally set at .006-.008" of an inch giving you have plenty of cushion there :-) The intake runs a tight .0015" lash and would have the most chance of closing up, but sees much less heat stress on it.

My BSA C-15 250 runs 65-70 2 up with plenty of throttle left over. Plenty of room for 2 Western sized people because it was transportation. Not a kid's toy. I run normal regular crash bars on all my motorcycles. My little Honda CM-185 Twin Star would cruise at 60 mph all day in Florida. We had the 55 MPH limit. I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine. I have had my Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto for 40 years. Commuted for 30 years back and forth to work in all weathers. Also used my BSA C-15 250 as well. Reliable and dependable transportation. My Sportster and my URAL side car outfit are my daily driver as I don't have a car. I have 4 BSA C-15 250 singles and a Triumph TR25W that the Triumph guys called the Triumph Turd. Mine with knobbly tires and high pipe runs great in the dirt. Don't forget your motorcycle is electronically limited because of European regulations.

@@QuasiMotard I went with 120/70/12 in the front and 120/70/10 in the rear. I got mine off of amazon. I don’t think they would fit with the fenders on, but no rubbing at all with the fenders removed. Just put on the S23 exhaust too, very happy with that. Not overly loud, especially at idle, good price point and looks way better than the stock!

Good to see you found the one you wanted, an somewhere not stacking on fees. From what I understand looking at videos of the classic 350, the speedometers all seem to be about 5% off. 2.5mph at 50 indicated. One of the two abs rings are used for the speedometer and the speed governor. No one seems to know which. So a tire 5% bigger around would fix the error, or abs rings with 5% fewer holes. Its nothing internal as it shows the same error and shuts off at the same speed no matter the sprocket size. I have put the bug in a few ears of people that have changed sprockets. But so far no one has posted a video doing a top speed run with the abs sensors unplugged to disable the governor. I talk to a lot of beginners so use the term beginner bike often. But while I do encourage 200cc to 350cc, I mainly use the term to describe bikes that are light an cheap, so fear of dropping them does not get in the way of practicing harder riding maneuvers. The real issue is US riders disdain for any bike under 1000cc. Shocking the amount of riders hanging out on new rider forums just to tell anyone that will listen to never buy a 3 digit size bike. Either because its somehow dangerously slow or they will outgrow it to fast an be wasting money. Failing to mention that cheap bikes, especially used ones resell for about what you payed for them. I currently ride a 230cc cvt bike an I have been riding for 30 years. It will cruse all day at 55, out accelerate most Harleys an keep up climbing the mountain I live on. I have been eyeing A classic 350 thought. I like that old military look an would not mind being able to hit 70 mph every now an then to jump a few exits where side roads are lacking.

I will be doing a bunch of upgrades and testing with my Hunter on camera, so I'm sure we can find those answers. I plan to upgrade to a 16T front sprocket, and I'll strap a Dragy GPS to measure actual top speeds (in addition to my camera GPS). I'll try disabling the ABS or disconnecting the front ABS ring to see if we can fool the ECU into running wide-open up to the rev-limiter. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I bought hunter 350 about one and half month back Being a new bike , experiences heat issues from the engine @ 50 km ride in hot climate . So I upgraded engine oil from semi synthetic to 100% synthetic oil for heat control & engine protection. For siff rear suspenion eventhouh good for stability , but worse for the pillion rider in offroads.. So , decided to install RE classic reborn 350 rear shock absorbers for the pillion rider... Hopes.....better performance from the bike...

Ive had all sorts of sports and adventure bikes, I much prefer a smaller lightweight bike. I was touring across Europe for a few months and the adventure bike riders always struggled with them where as I on the other hand had no issues with my Vespa 300. The RE Hunter is going to be my next purchase in a couple of weeks.

@QuasiMotard one more question you could answer me though .... The gate opening at my property in spain is 660mm , could you fit the Hunter through a gap that narrow?

@CiBi1968 The spec sheet lists the Hunter as "800 mm wide (without mirrors)." So, you might need to tilt the handlebars left/right through your doorway to squeeze through. If your 660 mm wide passage is a longer corridor instead of a doorway, then you'll certainly have a problem. I just turned the bars to full-lock left and right, then measured the width from the end of the grip to the opposite turn indicator. It appears to be 640-650 mm wide. The width across the middle from the edge of the exhaust to the left footpeg also appears to be about 650 mm wide, so it's gonna be a close shave! Good luck! 😉👍 --QM

You gotta give it a name 😁👍 I too have a 30" inseam but being 5ft 10 with a long reach I guess the bars will be perfect for me ... Can't wait to swing my leg over one .... Still undecided on Colour ... But if I make the wrong choice I'll just buy another Tank & Panels 😁 or another bike .... I can feel a Cafe Racer & a Scrambler style coming on .

Hey , cool bike man , Best of luck with it ! I was lucky enough to ride the original 350 Bullet with the separate gearbox and fast neutral lever , all over India many yrs ago . The bike was perfect for the roads ( and rivers and mountains) it had to deal with . I loved them . I ride a 125 cos its perfect for the roads I use and what I need it for. Just one thing , on your clutch cable , both those adjuster nuts should be on the upper side of the lower cable adjuster bracket on the engine cover . One locks the other . It's a common mistake .

The 350; engine is a beauty . It NOT a beginner's bike , i moved down from a pan European 1300 v4 because i just dont need a rocket anymore. i put 5000 miles on my meteor commuting and touring averaged 106 mpg on long runs and 90+ all the time ( uk gallons) . These days 55 mph is enough for me 60 on longer runs 👍👍ps clutch is cable so a drop of oil on the cable now and then 😁
