Thank you for making this video! I only recently watched the bluray release after having watched the VHS version multiple times and was surprised how much material was new to me!

VHS cuts were overseen by Kneale himself and he said were to remove lengthy transitions, technical issues and tighten up the pace a little. For years the Penguin/Arrow books were the only unedited source outside of occasional screenings at the NFT.(Now BFI).

I've got the whole, uncut thing, on a set of DVDs I bought from the BBC, decades ago.

2 edits I miss when watching the restored version are the fanfare music & lingering shot of the Martians at the end of part 3 & the edit from the Gargoyle to the close up of the Vicar poring tea, felt more atmospheric & claustrophobic.

Not too long ago I actually bought the original VHS release from 1988. I knew it was edited but I didn't know what was cut, I must say the edited version still flows very naturally and a lot of the lost footage is superficial. I should get the Blu Ray at some point since I've heard it's one of the better looking Blu Ray upscales from the BBC.

As a huge Quatermass/Kneale fan I (also hugely!) appreciate this go-thru!! I wonder if the up-rsed version put out, I believe, on Blu-ray also had these same cuts? Do you know? Or other cuts that differ from this earlier composite assembly? Thanks again. Good wishes from LA, CA, USA!

If you are referring to the 2018 Blu-Ray by the BBC; it is uncut. The serial was also released on DVD in 2005, but that had some minor pieces cut due to technical reasons. The blu-ray is the most complete version.

Truth be told, I can't tell what is omitted: the bit on the right or the left. 🫤 Still, great video. I love the Quatermass stories. 😎

It is possible that some of those edits (e.g. the teddy boy or the librarian's dialogue) were made with the partial intention of removing or reducing payments to individual actors or their estates.
