Quebec judge refuses to prohibit pro-Palestinian protest at McGill University in Montreal

On May Day, 2024, a justice of the Quebec Superior Court dismissed an application by two students at McGill University for an injunction barring five pro-Palestinian student groups from protesting on the university's campus. Dimitri Lascaris discussed this development with geopolitical analyst Leith Marouf, who is currently based in Beirut, Lebanon. Years ago, Marouf was himself an outspoken critic of Israel when he was elected to the Student Union of Concordia University in Montreal, and was suspended by that institution for his pro-Palestinian activism.

Given the opinion, made around 30 minutes in, that the US courts would also likely uphold 1st Amendment rights (to gather and protest etc), I wonder if some class legal action could be taken by the protesting students that have been assaulted, against the mayor, the police, the university's governors, and or the state governor? I don't know about the possibility of legal recourse, (and obviously I am sympathetic to the university students who have been protesting) but I think a serious effort should made to uphold 1st Amendment civil rights (as I think it is important that citizens be able to demonstrate their discontent without being suppressed by state backed violence). When I was a student, after classes ended in May, I was either looking for a job or working at a job, who could afford to stay in an encampment for weeks on end? NO ONE. Why are they masked? Maybe those two students should check their ego, put aside all they were taught, really go and listen without prejudice to what those students are protesting instead of wasting the courts and law enforcement time and tax money. Born and raised in Montreal all my life and I must say that this has been one of the most educational videos I have ever seen about my city in years. I have also traveled the world and agree that there is indeed a culture of servitude to the anglo canadian empire but also specifically in Quebec there is a culture of servitude to the franco quebec canadian empire (if you can call it that). I was in Concordia in 2002 and then switched to a French university after a year. I see my French Canadian "Quebecois" university friends to this day (including some with PHDs). You got it wrong about Canada. Folks in Quebec are not French. They are French speaking autochthones or Métis… France didn’t bring them back to France did they ? We were not considered French by the French and were rejected because we were mixte… At the time of the conquest, every French Canadian also spoke either Innu or Cree… Quebec folks are autochthones that happen to speak French.
