I have a single golf face compressiceps in my 40g with few julie transcriptus and leulupis. They get along well since they're lots of rocks, plants and wood to hide and they haven't eaten the plants (maybe a bit but they're big plants), I'm excited to see how they grow up it's only 1.5 inches or so and it seems like a slower growing cichlid compared to the south american ones im used to keeping.

They are not that hard to keep. Like Discus many are being bred in different types of water perimeters resulting in fish that can handle the perimeters better. I am lucky the water we have in my area is spot on with the water found in Lake Tanganyika and they do very well. I agree 100% with everything stated here, but do not fear buying this fish if your water perimeters are good for it and you have decent filtration. Mine are doing great in a 75 gallon with 2 marineland 350's and a sponge with a powerhead. I do weekly water changes and have never had problems keeping Calvis. That being said I have only kept Frontosa,Calvis,Tretocephalus. I am glad to know it is bad to have Tropheus with them as I was thinking about buying some to add in with them which I will not be doing after this video. Thank you for posting:P

The goal is definitely not to scare people from buying this fish...just to avoid them buying this fish to add with tropheus he he. They are less prone to illness in higher pH and GH parameters ;) Thanks for your comment.

Agreed. Chasing water parameters is very rarely required except for wild caught fish. Chasing PH especially is a sign of someone that doesn't know what they are doing

Hope you're well I got 6 calvus for $30 each very small, for a fun project. (The Black's ) 75gl tank I put feeder guppies about 50 in the tank with them to slowly feed on as that grow. Thinking the guppies would have babies for small fry food. I do feed pellet and flake as well. Was this a good or bad plan???????

Hi Richelle, I enjoyed your video! I recently picked up some Gold Head Compressiceps about 6 weeks ago. So far, everything is going well. I just felt a need to expand the hobby, and I am enjoying them. They are about an inch long in a small colony of six in a 40 breeder that I decorated pretty heavy with Holy Rock and Escargot shells that have been of course cleaned; I hope I am doing this right. I use some Tanganyikan buffer and some Cichlid Lake Salt. If you have any input, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks very much for sharing

Hi I have the Altolamprologus compressiceps. sometimes two out of the 3 change to a dark rusted brownish yellow color and their strips and fins are black.. it's pretty, but what does that mean? Also, the other compressicep sometimes turn very light in color as if it is white. My fiance and i got them from a fish show in MD in 2019 from one of the FIsh exotic guys in Florida who calls them F1's.

Hi there I have a compressiceps guarding a shell entrance, I have two of them, one is smaller wih dull colors, and the other one is slightly bigger with darker colors, the bigger one guards the shell, but I never saw the other one dwelling around it. The bigger one is the only one standing nearby. I assume it's the male, is it possible that is just faking the spawning driven by instinct? (while there are no eggs)

i don't think one needs products to keep calvus/comps. if they are wild caught....maybe...... unless water is too acidic. ... i have kept and bred calvus at 7 ph. a stable ph is better than a high one..
@QuebecCichlides
@QuebecCichlides 6 жыл бұрын
A stable pH is important but if it's too low, you might have issues on the long run. If you are lucky to keep them a long time in that pH, good for you. With all the bad experiences I've seen with people who have low pHs for African cichlids, It would be irresponsible of me to advise people to keep it that way. Just because one has been smoking their whole life and hasn't been sick doesn't mean that smoking doesn't kill.

@QuebecCichlides
@QuebecCichlides 6 жыл бұрын
Just because it works for you doesn't mean that it's the "ideal" environment for your fish. African cichlids will adapt but it's not the best. They're from lake Tanganyika and thrive in the Tanganyika tank with appropriate water parameters. Of course, I never said that they wouldn't survive in such a mixed tank as yours. It's like if you've smoked cigarettes your whole life. You could say that they didn't kill you but it would be irresponsible to tell others that it's healthy to smoke.

Ok, I'm less than one minute in & I'm already worried by the bad advice. Unless you have wild caught fish, which are very, very rare, or have very soft, acidic water, then messing with water chemistry is going to cause more harm than good. 95% of these fish are born & raised in plain old dechlorinated tap water. It's stupid to try to imitate the waters of a lake that the fish hasn't been anywhere near in many, many generations. Take it from someone that's been breeding Tangs for longer than you've been breathing
