On "Seaside Rendezvous", the "musical" bridge are Freddie & Roger using their voices to mimic the instruments, even the kazoo. That song makes me happy. Freddie sings all vocal parts on "Love of My Life" (same as the a cappella intro of BoRhap); Freddie wanted harp so Brian learned to play. "39" is about space travelers heading out on a one-year journey to explore other lands. When they return, they find that 100 years have passed for their land and families. Brian is an astrophysicist so no surprise he wrote it. RIP, Freddie. There can be only one!

This album was a massive inspiration for My Chemical Romance's The black Parade and you can totally hear it with the dark lyrics with playful arrangements.

"Death On Two Legs" Sheffeld who was Queen's manager had stolen their money and while they were 3 albums in and three very successful 9 month tours, the band were still living in the same tiny flats they had been from the beginning and each making about 20 Quid a week. Their manager showed up in a brand new top of the line Rolls Royce and that is when the $hit hit the fan. When the band asked for an advance so John could put a down payment on a home, their manager informed them that the band was bankrupt. Freddie was so angry that he wrote this song. Brian was concerned that they might get sued but Freddie said if their manager sued them, then he was admitting that this song was indeed about him and that he was guilty of all of it. Sheffeld sued and lost for the most part and the band had to buy their way out of their contract.

Queen seem to be a legitimate example of an artist whose greatness is easier to perceive for people who aren't music obsessives. Don't need to look very hard around reaction youtube to find some normies getting their faces melted by stuff from this album, but us indie hipster types have never been able to embrace them the way we have, say, Bowie. I think it's just easy to imagine this music was aimed at a very different kind of audience from us, which isn't necessarily true; Queen obviously ended up having a broader commercial appeal than any other rock band ever, but having listened to their first seven records with fresh ears a few years back, I would say Queen's creative vision is almost as idiosyncratic as that of Floyd or the Velvets, or anyone else who pioneered the concept of "Art Rock." The normies may have eventually embraced them, but they were working with countercultural weirdos in mind first and foremost, and were staunchly committed to making every track as cool as they possibly could.

Personally I never could really get into Queen, maybe it's because their music is often way too operatic and funny-ish to me? I never understood why Bohemian Rhapsody's solo is so good, it does really nothing for me and the opera pastiche is just sp comical and over the top that I don't like at all. The 2 songs from Queen I love are "Innuendo" and "Show Must Go On", probably because of how serious they are and "Innuendo" would be probably one of my favourite albums of all time if the rest of the tracklist continued this vibe but then you got "Dilalah" or "Hitman Song" which don't get me wrong, has killer riffs but again it's just like, to me Queen's music gives me vibe as of the band don't treat themselves and their music very seriously. And now, I know that this might sound harsh but all wrote is not really a criticism but my personal perception of their sound that doesn't really allow me to take great pleasure from it, it's just not my jam. And there's nothing wrong with not taking your art very seriously, I don't expect all music to be fkin King Crimson's "Starless", I love a lot of electro swing or joyful alt rock, such as Weezer or Yuck, but Queen's stuff I perceive as a bit too comedic

@pinkraven4402 As someone whose favorite band of the alternative era is Ween, I would say you're grossly underestimating the place that humor has in the art of music itself. Musical satisfaction is often a very similar effect to comedic satisfaction, achieved from the same elements of establishing and breaking patterns, and almost all great music contains potentially comic inflections. Just look at The Beatles, the common heroes of Ween and Queen, who maintained a kind of gonzo, absurdist attitude even as they revolutionized their genre and their society. I've seen it argued that the very quality of their greatness was that they DIDN'T take themselves too seriously, even when putting in extraordinary amounts of effort to create sounds no one had ever heard before. I think playfulness and whimsy are fundamental aspects of musical genius, and I don't think Queen rob themselves of any profundity or depth by remaining committed to those childlike virtues. It's why the theme of their first great anthem is Freddy's insistence upon the veritable reality of his childhood land of make-believe; the "Seven Seas of Rhye" where he so confidently states that he can and will take you, the place where no evil power in the world can touch him. That's not some idle hippy daydream, that's genuine, militant Romanticism, a fantastical idealism every bit as staunchly defended as that of any God or nation, a firm and earnest belief that the realm of imagination is REAL and that creativity acts as a spiritual conduit to the power and majesty of our inner worlds. Pretty esoteric stuff for a couple of arch jokers, I would say.

@@pinkraven4402 Of course not everyone enjoys everything. You have obviously given Queen a fair shake. I think if you don't like Queen in your younger years it easier to enjoy their music as you age. From my perspective their are loads of serious music. Music is for expression, there are many different emotions to express. Music critics have given the idea that the only music that really matters is music about suffering or something with a worthwhile cause. These are certainly good topics for songs, it was what I gravitated towards at a younger age. But I come to really appreciate Queen more as I age, there are not many artists that makes really sophisticated music about happier or more uplifting topics. Queen music is full of Freddie Mercury's whimsical personality. Freddie Mercury loved life, and he was a really big jokester, so you can get that from his musical output. I like the whimsical nature of Queen's music especially in the 70's, although Innuendo is one of my favorite Queen albums as well. If you click with Queen's music is extremely uplifting. Of course Queen is popular because of their live performances. A Bob Dylan fan once said to me that Queen sounds artificial and I disagreed, he used Bob Dylan as an example of being authentic. Of course I had to point out that if Freddie Mercury suddenly started acting like Bob Dylan it would very inauthentic, because that is not his personality. Artist have different personalities that they bring out through their music. I do think Bohemian Rhapsody is actually quite serious, the song is about the pitfalls of the music industry and what it means to be an entertainer. You might have to kill a prat of yourself or sell your soul in order to be famous. The song takes you on journey. The mock opera section is reference to Gilbert and Sullivan. In Gilbert and Sullivan operettas they often showcased the most heinous acts or the most difficult conditions conditions with overt comedy, because they could not necessarily show the darkest deeds on stage. This section can be seen as a trial for the soul of protagonist, or it is the time when the hero faces his inner demons with different voices and conflicting voices speaking to him. It also alludes to the difficulties of being an entertainer, This is also a very British thing to do, where you face your most difficult times with a dry sense of humor.

I love this album since I was a kid, and is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I think that the overexposure of Bohemian Rhapsody meant that many have not listened to the entire album, and it is really very fun to listen to, apart from how well played and produced it is... I just subscribed to your channel because what you did live when BoRap started was amazing, incredible!!! Now I just want to be your boyfriend, but I'm far away, so I'll dedicate myself to watching your videos, next DM's Violator!!! Kiss from Argentina!!!

The modern Queen hate really feels like everyone is just taking music too seriously. Queen was 4 outstanding musicians who make a lot of serious music but also always had fun with it, let themselves play for all their emotions, and didn't censor themselves for an image, but people call them mid because not every song is some solemn masterpiece. They have those songs, with their own flavor, but I think their strongest point in songwriting is their short, simple, sweet and fun songs. Writing those as perfectly as they do is a feat of music Or people just want them to be another band and criticize every way Queen differs from their contemporaries

Freddie was in love with Mary Austin and left her nearly everything in his will. He considered her his common law wife. Freddie couldn't be put in a sexual category, he never really defined himself, he's a mystery even to his very close friends. Queen did all types of music which drew a wide range of fans. Metallica covered Queen's Stone Cold Crazy, it is known as the first thrash metal. Queen was an epic band. The effects were very difficult in 75. Love of My Life was written by Freddie for Mary Austin. As a Queen fan for 51 years I have to say you did a great reaction and I liked your honest opinion.

I'm so happy to see that recent events have helped Queen click for you, they're very much a comfort band for me during hard times because they're absurd bullshit made wildly entertaining! Some fun trivia is that Freddie Mercury actually regretted the lyrics on the first track, feeling he went too far, but I consider the actual instrumental spectacular.
