Well, I had hopes that this video would be better but I got dissapointed by your choices from the worst to best. Races and Opera at 9 & 8? Really? Mustapha>Ridiculous? The Miracle and Magic so low? Especially Miracle while you have Game and The Works higher? Dude... Your ranking sucks, is lacking taste and perception for someone who claims that he didn't allow any new member in his band if he didn't like Queen. With that logic I'd say no to you myself if you wanted to get to my band based on your ranking. I also like all their albums but the ranking man.. Loser in the End>Doesn't work? Brighton Rock>Ridiculous extended? Prophet's Song>Too long? Come on.......

Works was great and there is literally nothing wrong about this album. The Game is fine too. That's what I agree with him about. But the points he made about the songs mentioned by you were quite dumb honestly.

I have been waiting for this one Professor James. I was very happy to see The Game being somewhat up there on the list. Seeing that tour brings back some fond memories. I could never do a Queen ranking myself because I love most of them all the same. I have all of their studio albums up until Hot Space. The Captain generously sent me a beautiful Japanese copy of 'A Kind Of Magic. I will just say that I gained a whole new appreciation for their later albums too after hearing it for the first time. I kind of thought that you were going to choose News Of The World as one of your top three. You kind of gave it away in a few previous video comments when you and I talked about Queen. I love the album myself. It would be in my top three too. Although Races and Opera would be ahead of it. Day at the Races will always be my fave because of the four Freddie songs. Take My Breath Away, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, Millionaire Waltz and the ever amazing Somebody To Love. The whole album is superb although the last two tracks could have been better picked. > I also love Opera to death . It is hard for me to not include two of your high picks 'Sheer Heart Attack' and the second album in my top three. They are incredible records. But But being such a big fan of Freddie's writing I always went with the songs that really touched me on a personal level. I had tickets to see them in 1975 but it got cancelled. But I did see them for the first time in an amazing venue called The Music Hall in 1976 on their Opera Tour. The last time I saw them was when they played with Billy Squier at Boston Garden in 1982. They were an incredible live band. I am very fortunate to have seen them in the seventies and eighties. Your attempt to rank these albums was a success. I appreciated it because I know how much you appreciated them. It would be hard for me to watch a ranking unless the ranker was familiar with all of the albums. You were. Thanks James. I enjoyed it very much~ Rob/Boston

Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed it , and great also to hear your Queen experiences. I unfortunately never got to see them live, which I know I'll always regret. I think you made a really good point about Freddie's personal songwriting, and this is something I could have mentioned in my intro....Queen are often branded as being bombastic and emotionally hollow, a criticism I've never understood given that there are songs such as Somebody to Love and You Take My Breath Away there in the canon. I still miss him/them every day. Glad you're a fan too. Always appreciate the support, Rob. Bye for now.

Great video James! You made me realize how much I missed listening to Queen. You used the term Love-Hate and I think the reason for that is certain songs had so much radio play in the 70's, people would start saying they hate a song when, in actuality, they hated hearing a song 12 times a day! Now that we have more control of the music, it's fun to bring back the songs of our youth🤗 I'll be looking into buying back my Queen albums😎

Thanks for making this, James. I'd out myself as a 'casual appreciator' of Queen, but have often wanted a way in to uncover their deeper cuts. Really enjoy your assessment of each album, and insights like the 'freshness factor' for the Opera/Races albums make a lot of sense in framing the records. I also like how you kind of loosely demarcate into Prog and Pop Queen. They don't seem mutually exclusive, more that they matured and started flexing their creative muscle - whichever way it took them. A great point on a record being 'so cohesive it tends to one-note', as well as the 'paciness' of an album. And I really respect your decision to go heart over head on no. 1 - your argument is valid and very convincing. Respect!! Ps - Love your band's litmus test!!

Great video. Nice to see someone giving their own ranking as opposed to what they think it should be. I like Queen and the first two albums I bought were A Night ... and A Day ... but wasn't impressed so my affair with Queen nearly ended before it started. Fortunately, I heard News of the World and Jazz and was impressed. I thought Freddie never 'came out' publically. I didn't pay much attention to the Miracle and It's a Kind of Magic when they came as the songs off of them didn't get much airplay in Australia except for I Want It All. I thought Innuendo was superb when it was released.
@jamesgriffithsmusic7 жыл бұрын
Interesting point about Freddie 'coming out'. Now you mention it, I don't recall an official announcement as such. I kind of thing the moustache and the rampant gay sex in the Munich night club scene kind of did the job for him, lol. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@AnthonyKiyola7 жыл бұрын
James Griffiths Most knew he was but I remember many fans denying it during the 80s. But you're right about the give aways : ) Not to mention the band's name, the leather caps, some of the lyrics... etc. When I first heard Innuendo, I said to my girlfriend that Freddie probably has a Spanish boyfriend, to which she replied "Is he gay? He can't be." She really liked him. I say I like Queen but I'm not a huge fan but I loved Freddie. I saw a video a few months back about the 25th anniversay of his death. I thought "It couldn't have been that long ago? It seems like yesterday." I remember thinking in the late 80s "I'm not really into Queen's later music but as long as there is Freddie in the world all is well."

The first Queen album and the RTB albums were the best IMHO. Having worked at Trident between 79-80 we could always feel Queen’s presence. The Sheffield brothers had taken a back seat but the Studio Manager Peter Boothe carried the Sheffield brothers heavy handed studio management. All studio house bands, as queen were, would use the studio 8n down time and we would have to work for them. We did it with a band called Charlie when I was there. Not sure why Queen were so ungrateful about it because without Tridents support they would never have afforded such a superb studio used by Bowie and Elton John and even the Beatles. Trident was the very first 48 track studios and created the best drum sound ever. I used to have to spend hours setting up the drums for many famous disco tracks and rock inc Genesis, Rod Stewart Kiss and Rush. Like you I love Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack being my favourite Queen album. I can’t agree on NOTW as I think there’s a lot of filler on there. Great video and with Queen a video that’s going to be contentious! Nice one James.
@jamesgriffithsmusic7 жыл бұрын
Fascinating stuff John. Have you ever considered writing a book about your time at Trident? I'd read it! I'm a drummer, and back in the nineties I recorded at countless professional and semi professional studios in West and East Yorkshire. At all those studios, the engineers always seemed to take hours mic'ing the drums...but I never got a decent drum sound ever really. There's a real art to it. I know Jimmy Page and his engineer were masters of ambient drum mic'ing, and RTB and Mack both did amazing work with Roger Taylor. Some of those tom-tom fills on Queen II still blow my mind today...on the song Father to Son they sound like tympani. I also love the snare sound on Sheer Heart Attack. Hope to see another video from you soon.

James Griffiths yes I’ve started to write down many stories about the bands I worked with. Some good ones. I’m a fab hand at mixing drums but at Trident it was our bread and butter and we used to spend hours setting it all up. The thump thump thump of the kick drum used to drive us insane. I’ll probably do a video tomorrow and record digging in Bristol

James Griffiths I feel that way too. My brother actually had that one (and News Of The World), so I do have some familiarity with it, and I love all the hits that came from it. I'll likely start by grabbing a copy of that and getting re-acquainted with it.

Hey James, I'm just a casual Queen fan. I like most of the.hits and only own a hits album, Queen II, and The Works. My introduction to Queen was like many We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. When I started to seriously get into music and taping off the radio, One of the first songs I loved was Body Language. Then with the start of video channels, I was really into Radio GaGa. I was also really into Bohemian Rhapsody and still am. Probably the greatest live band ever, I still watch their Live Aid set today. Your knowledge of the band's history and music is impressive. I love your story of the Queen test you would put prospective band members through.-Lou
@jamesgriffithsmusic7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lou. Oh OK, for some reason I was under the impression that you really weren't too keen on Queen but it seems I was mistaken. Yeah I would agree they were the greatest live band of all time. When they were at the top of their game, no-one could touch them. I only wish I'd seen them! Thanks for watching.

+James Griffiths I'm curious as to your opinion of the band with Adam Lambert and Paul Rodgers?
@jamesgriffithsmusic7 жыл бұрын
Would you believe, ages ago I made a video on this very topic but I never posted it for some reason. I'm not a fan of any of Queen's post-Freddie projects...the stage musical, the Paul Rodgers line-up, Lambert etc. My personal view is that they should have left well alone. The thing is, I'd happily have paid to see Brian May and Roger Taylor take some kind of Queen show out on the road, had they not used the Queen name. I suppose it's no worse than the Who carrying on without Entwistle and Moon, but mind you I don't really like that either. I always thought Zeppelin had the right idea when they called it a day after Bonham died. I think it's one thing if you have a band which changes members a lot over a long period of time (eg. Fleetwood Mac or the Stones) but it's another if a band was only ever a particular group of individuals, each of which brought something unique to the table. The fact is, Brian May and Roger are not Queen, they were IN Queen, and that's an important difference I think. I've had these debates and arguments with Queen fans over the years though, and I never seem to get anywhere. I've gradually learned to keep my views to myself!
@jamesgriffithsmusic7 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, also....if Brian and Roger had picked up the Queen thing again a couple of years after Freddie's death, I might also have been more amenable to it, as it would have seemed like more of a continuation. I was actually quite excited by the idea of them joining up with George Michael, as was mooted. The problem is though, they made a big announcement saying 'Freddie is irreplaceable' (which he was), and disbanded for about twenty years, before discovering this burning urge to team up with Rodgers. To me it smacked of $$$
@PoliceBoy4657 жыл бұрын
+James Griffiths I agree it's about the money. I also think there is a longing to recapture the fame. I have no issue with them doing Queen songs with Adam, but they are not Queen. At least with Rodgers I think they did an album of new songs, though I never had any interest in it. Drop the name Queen. They are afraid to call themselves something else and have convinced themselves that they are Queen. The Who I accept, though it clearly is not the same as the original band.

My knowledge of Queen albums is wafer thin. My main exposure to them growing up was via ToTP. I had Hot Space when it came out and I loved it, though I don't remember much about it now to be honest. An interesting watch. I also see Queens career as like a game of 2 halves. The 70s as the experimental kinda grand period. The 80s more polished pop rock. Overall News of the World I deem as my favourite Queen album . Starting with the double whammy of We will rock you and We are the champions. Spread your wings is one of Queens best ballads. Love the sound effects on Get down make love. A fantastic album. Queen 2 I'd put at No 2 And A Night at the opera maybe No 3. Surprised you're not keen on Loser in the end. I love it..And many more Roger sung songs My favourite 80s Queen Album is The Works.Some Great pop rock in Radio gaga and I want to break free..Some barnstorming rockers in Tear it up and Hammer to fall..Good stuff. And Innuendo was a very impressive return to form under very difficult circumstances. Sorry its took me 5 years to come across this podcast..But better late than never..😜😉👍 .

Well, I was totally shocked that I agreed with about 95% on your rankings as well as your reasoning behind them. The only difference is I would've had Sheer Heart Attack 1st, Queen II 2nd and News of the World 3rd. But I agree with all the rest, especially with the 80s not being as strong a period for them.

_I may have over-sold the quality of my comment in my latest video._ First of all I really discovered and LOVED this band around 2008 but since listening after listening, I discover the richness of their music. I must also say that I do not have a copy of "Flash Gordon", "Hot Space", "A Kind ..." and "The Miracle". I never listened to "Fash" but you make me want to be curious about it. "Hot Space" now I could find a new 2015 version, but I expect to find a surprise_smooth price copy one of these days. "The Works" is for me their last great album. "Innuendo" is a beautiful beautiful album but I can't rank it with the others. New decade, a last goodbye... What a last "Au revoir" album! I do not know if this is the case in England but clearly in France for a very long time (and probably still now) Queen is only a mustache for the ignorant masse. Quite popular in the late 1970s and even more in the mid-1980s as everywhere over the world. But after the death of Freddie, a disgusting, odious, unfair and stupid dangerous moral condemnation have spoil a bit their artisitic legacy, talent... their greatness. I remember a "friend of a friend" telling me some dreadful words when he saw that I had so many Queen albums. I asked him to leave my house. In fact, I used your old "new band member" selective method (absolutely hilarious and efficient technic). "Queen II" was the very first I discovered 20 years ago. ~14 years old, no English understanding level. I did not understand at all and I hated it. ~12 years later, it was the right time! "Jazz" is the first album I really full discovered, then "The Game". "...Opera" is great but it neither can't be number 1 on my list. Today, I hesitate between "Sheer Heart Attack" and "Queen II". In the end, each of their albums have always here and there a lot of fantastic crazy little things. Four musicians, four jewels on the same royal crown. They were great. They are great!

Thank you for your long and lovely comment! I don't recall there being a lot of nastiness about Freddie's life-style or death in England....there was quite a lot of shock and grief I think. But I knew their reputation had suffered in other parts of the world, particularly north America. Have you heard The Miracle etc even if you don't have them? Your comment about Innuendo is very interesting (not being able to rank it with the others). For a long time I had the exact same problem - unlike all the other albums, I have NO happy memories of this release at all, for obvious reasons. But also I was very unhappy in my own personal life at the time...Freddie's death obviously made it worse. All the other records bring warm and happy memories of home and family, but not that one. But I do love a lot of the songs. I often wonder where Queen would have ended up if Freddie hadn't died. I wasn't a big fan of Made in Heaven, and certainly haven't been a fan of anything Brian and Roger have done since. I suspect they would eventually have started repeating themselves and becoming unbearable, like U2. But who knows....

Not being familiar with their other albums, I think it would be hard to beat "The Game," though "News..." comes close. A great list. As you say you like all Queen albums, so do I. But I would only pick my favourite tracks and put them on my MP 3 player and not listen to the rest of them much. All of the albums have great tracks and then some less attractive to my ears. When I put an album at No 1, I do it for these reasons: 1) I have to like each and every track on the album without exception. 2) Musically, it tugs at my heart and emotions, not necessarily the sing along numbers, but I like that too. And in the case of Queen: 3) the sheer effort, Freddie made to sing these tracks with only an electronic drum set all by himself in his last days and the brilliance of the remaining members of the band to finish the tracks and that of course is “Made in Heaven”.

I think I fall in the "don't quite get it" category...maybe I was too young to catch the 70's stuff at the time and just sort of got exposed to the big hits later on so I never quite connected with them as a whole. In the 80's all I remember hearing was Radio Gaga (which I thought was alright, but I didn't have much knowledge of the band's history to put it any kind of context). I'm continually surprised how many Queen albums there are, every so often someone (like you here) will show ones I've never seen or even heard of before, particularly from that 80's period. Even the first two albums I don't think I've ever seen in the wild here. Cheers, nicely done James!

Hi Doug. Have a listen to the songs You Take My Breath Away from the Day at the Races album, and My Melancholy Blues from News of the World. Those are the ones I normally direct people to who are heartily sick of Radio Ga Ga etc. They could be Aretha Franklin songs. You might also enjoy the (somewhat bastardised, probably) 'Jamaican' feel of the song Don't Try Suicide from The Game. Also check out the drum and bass work on Dragon Attack from the same album. I think Queen are an interesting case in that they are a great 'deep cuts' band, who are largely judged by their oft-overplayed hit singles. Thanks for watching, despite not being a fan!

I'm not so familiar with Queen that I could rank their albums. I don't even have some of them. We watched Flash Gordon on DVD earlier this year and my eldest son really liked it. He has a copy of Queens Greatest Hits so he could identify the theme song in the film but also the style of the rest of the music, so I gave him a copy of the Flash album to him on his birthday. I haven't listened to it myself yet so even he is familiar with Queen music that I'm not. Did I miss it or have you forgotten to include the last Queen album with Paul Rodgers?

The cover for The Miracle spooks the hell out of me. I do love that Sparks tried to tell Brian May to quit Queen, that they weren't going anywhere, and that he should join their band. I do think Freddie nicked a bit from Sparks in his style.

Believe me Kris, I've known Queen-haters. But the more common thing you find is 'don't get Queen'-ers. Not hatred as such, more bafflement that anyone would be vaguely engaged by them. I'm seeing Sparks live tomorrow!
