Just got back from seeing it. And, I am just stuck at the moment. I think the scene with the kid and the cop. Was in there to pull the viewers empathy. We were okay, with the white cop, being killed. But, hated for the black cop, to be killed. At the end of the day, they are BOTH, murdered. And, the lines blur, when civilians. Are able to murder cops. Some, think all cops are bad. Therefore killing innocent cops, for no reason. At the end of the day. This film showed me. That it can be you’re own people. Sadly, that will turn on you. And, Queen & Slim went out like Martyrs. They foreshadowed their demise a couple of times. “I will always hold your hand” and other little hints. Realistically, in the back of our minds. We knew, there wasn’t going to be a happy ending. There never is

Guys, the way we're represented in stories is how people are taught to perceive us. The movie may be beautiful, but again, another struggle love film. I'm tired of slave films and struggle love films. We have other stories just like everyone else. Black super woman that has to save someone and fight. Women are strong and we're capable of doing great things, but not all black women want to fight 24/7, or be everyone's savior. Sometimes we're damsels that need help. Sometimes we need to be cared for, defended etc, instead having to save ourselves and everyone else. I'm glad that people are able to tell these kinds of story, but for me, it would be better received if there was a balance. There's not enough films of black women where we can just be women without struggle love. We can't just be the protagonist that needs to stop the bad guy. Or the honorable woman that is valauable enough to fight for, or too good a character to be involved in questionable predicaments. More of the same representation to me. The worst part about it, is that Queen was educated, an attorney, yet, she's making stupid decisions.
@PinkPisces
@PinkPisces 4 жыл бұрын
I get where you’re coming from but I’m careful about being insatiable. If all we had were movies with positive images we’d crave something more dramatic that told a story of the struggle. Imagine not having films like boyz in the hood or crooklyn that do show what happens in the hood.
@Lankston101
@Lankston101 4 жыл бұрын
@@PinkPisces Taryn Great Hey Taryn. I think you missed the point. I said "it would be better received if there was a balance." Positive and negative. Right now, there's no balance, there's more negative representation, thus the desire for more positive stories. Does that make sense? Anyway, I agree with what you're saying 100%, but that's really not the case here.

No, it was needed. Junior saw Queen and Slim as role models that fought against police brutality which is a false narrative. The media put it out that the cop that Queen and Slim killed had murdered a Black person so people assumed they were freedom fighters. Junior is a kid that is seeing images of Cops hurting people that look like him and Queen and Slim did something about that. Junior has it in his head that his role-models are cop killers but he is sadly misguided. Junior went to a protest in the honor of Queen and Slim with a loaded handgun and shot a black police officer that was nice and trying to keep him safe in a protest gone bad and told him to go home.

It's also called "struggle love" and may be a better way to describe it bc it's a unilateral theme! Broken people choosing wrong people. Relationship dynamics that don't discriminate. Seems entertainment, especially black entertainment, likes to focus on the flaws on the black woman. Yes we are beautiful but we also deserve better representation! EVERYTHING in the movie was in there for a reason. The scenes that were questionable and uncomfortable for people were there for a reason. Spoiler. Down to the black boy killing the black cop. The scene where the white couple let them hide in their house goes back to slavery when slaves were on the run and white couples would hide them and lie to cops about their whereabouts. Down to when the cashier at the gas station did target practice on slim. Down to when they took the picture at the auto shop, kind of reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde they took pictures on the run. The three main outcomes are jail, death or they get away. Throughout the entire movie they foreshadowed the tragic ending. “Thank you for this journey, No matter how it ends” I don’t feel like the ending was a surprise bc why would they get away? Like how sway? The guy who turned them in literally told them that you cannot trust everybody and they started looking uncomfortable. I enjoyed the movie. Of course they didn’t have to die but it’s literally a tragedy. I hate how a lot of black people are saying the directors should have made it to where they get away or survive. It’s a realistic ending and the ending got those tears flowing. A lot of our people are giving the movie black lash saying that black people never win. I loved it at the end of the day. Nowadays black people want happy endings and accomplishment. I feel that the ending made perfect sense. But to each is its own.

I wanted to like the film but thought the dialogue was unrealistic, multiple character choices and movie logic idiotic (that gas station scene? Wtf.), didn't believe the chemistry between the 2. They bickered 95% of the movie as if thier lives weren't at stake. And the emotional and political statements they tried to hit seemed contrived. By the time the ending came around I felt nothing and was wondering was this supposed to be a love story (Love Jones), action flick (Set it Off) and/or political statement(Do the Right Thang) cause if so it did none of them well. In the end it was a good premise executed poorly with an undercooked script. But if you think Empire or Power is quality entertainment you might enjoy it. Personally I'd rather watch paint dry. To each they own.

Another thing people need to watch their own internal racism and self hate when it comes to dark skin women. Nothing about this woman was "angry black woman" like or "strong black woman" like. Yall saw a black woman and labeled her as such. If this character were played by a white man/woman you would never say she was angry. You would say she was "entitled". There is a difference. Rarely do we see black snobs or entiled black women on screen. A black woman who thinks she is better than a diner date and smarter than the police? How dare she? Like I said if she was white yall would say she was a typical entitled white person but because she was black everything way interpreted as anger. The only thing she was upset about was the fact that the person who she was defending was as a lawyer was executed. Which any human being would be mad about. But I forgot black woman can't have a bad day at work right? Yall kill me with the way yall constantly strip humanism from black women/darkskin women. Please check yourselves.

@CherieDanielle I agree with what you're saying. As a black man myself, I was able to see and understand her all too well. Lawd knows I love my black women!! They do not get enough credit for how strong they've been, and still continue to be strong today. Even tho she seem a bit distant and not really into the date, it takes a lil patience. You don't know the full story so how can you(ppl in the back) judge. In the movie she only talked about her mother being shot by her uncle. Just imagine what other things she has buried deep in her. How many scars are really there. Black men especially, should be healing our black women, empowering them. Loving them for their strength, their compassion, and for who they really are. They've have always been there for us. I would love to have a woman like Slim in my life. Ppl judge when they don't have the the whole story. Most won't be patient enough to wanna see it, nor understand it. This is all based on my opinion.

I received so much from that scene. The young people of today such as the mechanics young son who get very into the cases and unjustices we see today, sometimes not even knowing why, just to be seen or felt heard and...be remembered "immortal". To me, that scene showed the effect on the younger impressionable generation when situations like this happens. So quick to jump and protest but not always directing their anger at the right people. Also showing how the one police officer was on their side, but still had a job to do...this showed to direct your feelings to the people who should be held accountable. To show how these situations can become to a generation of social media users..viral. The viral attention, caused younger people to look up to them to want to be seen as fighting for a cause. This scene showed so much and was very complex. The anger and the love being played at once..was amazing.

The scene with Junior is one that I feel most people will overlook and not even talk about. They will just say Lena put it in for shock value and keep it pushing. I wonder how many Black parents talked to their black kids about Botham Jean or Atatiana Jefferson being killed in their home by cops. In the movie, Junior's father told Queen and Slim that they should have just taken the ticket and went home. Junior and his father had a different outlook on Queen and Slim but never had a discussion about it and that ended up getting Junior in trouble.

I was wanting to see more of the back story of Slim, how the mother got killed, the drama with the Uncle and the cops even chasing them. I never felt like they were in danger until the end. I think they needed to have some cop scenes starting to narrow it down how close the cops actually are. I did like the acting and sets like you mention. Check my review if you get a chance.

There has been a trend of foreign black actors taking on roles that are very much entrenched in the African-American experience (Selma, Detroit, Get Out, Us, Black and Blue, Harriet, etc) and it's insulting tbh. @@thr3385 What did the original comment have to do with Drake, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna? We are talking about movies not music. And yes there are tons of foreign actors who find work here in the American entertainment industry but I do think we need to see more AA actors in the roles that are deeply entrenched in the AA experience. The talent is already here! This is why Malcolm X will always be the superior biopic film over Selma and Harriet. Denzel Washington as an AA male was truly able to embody and tap into the spirit of Malcolm X that I do not think a foreign black actor would have been able to achieve.

@@ayeshabjordan Yup, they had final cut and didn't take any notes from white people and the film turned out to not be so good, so maybe that wasn't such a good idea. On another note: the seed of an idea James Frey game Lena was " a black couple on a date and a white officer pulls them over and the black man kills the white cop in self-defense." That is the FIRST 15 minutes of the film. So no he didn't sit down at the computer with her, but it is still like he help write it. So, yes, they did make history, but at what cost.

The films biggest point is “Life path soulmates” or “Twin flame” and the growth journey surrounded by entertainment to hide the main factor. The reason they stopped to dance, rude a horse as well as hangin out window. The keys were how they met, your not my type to becoming one. That’s why he stopped to dance to connect step one, next huge key was the “So what do you want line.” She stated “A man to help me see myself” part of the life partner journey becoming one from doing what the other has done but you haven’t, that’s why he got on the horse, hung out the window etc and she said the dinner prayer and other things becoming him. The writers used polices shootings and other things because it’s relevant of today’s issues but majority of it was mainly just entertainment like the fat boy and his dad in a hurt leg the police shooting in the beginning different things throughout the movie was just uses entertainment to disguise the underlying factor of the movie showing people of today the true meaning of partnership soulmate life partnership and what goes into the journey of seeing yourself and becoming your partner and vice versa so many reviews on KZbin of this film are missing the writers true intentions.

Decent movie that could have taken a different road to make it great. Since Queen was a lawyer, she should have been setting up some deals in place while on the run...since dash cam caught the entire incident of a known dirty cop. I feel like there should have been an Ohio cop on their tracks gathering intel from who all they encountered to find out they're not "cop killers", intervening in the finale so they could stand trial & maybe serving a light sentence instead of a death sentence that was predictable. The only issue I had with Slim was that scene where he gave the Clerk his gun. The scene with the teenage boy wasn't called for; especially when the cop pleaded for him to go home from a protest he shouldn't have attended. To me, Bokeem Woodbine levels things out while rocking Sean Jean.

Queen and Slim are common African American nicknames...the purpose was for the audience to self identify with their characters via their nicknames. That's why they don't reveal their real names until the ending.

People are arguing and discussing points in the movie that are sensationalized and irrelevant. I would love to read some comments on the symbolism of this movie. Ask yourself why was the female character portrayed in the manner in which she was portrayed? Aggressive, mean spirited, egotistical, educated but self absorbed and reckless. Why was her character shot right at the beginning of the movie? Progressed to a shoulder injury to being the first sprayed with bullets and die. Black man couldn't save his woman or himself! They were given zero options to survive. Even when they showed no signs of resisting or a weapon on them they were gunned down! The acting was great, cinematography great movie score great but at the end of the day another black movie that depicts black lives doesn't matter.

Thank you for educating me on this film. When I first saw Queen and Slim I felt confused and disappointed, thinking the film was about police brutality and revenge. After watching your video I understand it was more or less about the characters and how they viewed life. Although I still have a few discrepancies with this film I better understand it now.

I think the police brutality and Queen & Slim being hunted was a metaphor for the stress and pressures that African-Americans have to deal with everyday. With that in mind, should we constantly live and move in fear as Slim did during the opening or try to live our lives to the fullest as the learned to do?

This film had a direct form of role reversal. She was more of the leader and decision maker throughout the whole film. She was more radical and rebellious, and he was more spiritual and indecisive. Not saying that neither one shouldn't be either. But when its man/woman. The man should be the leader and the woman she be the help mate and the backbone to help guide, comfort, and support his leadership. Ijs

Garvo Lotti they were not in a relationship yet, they had just met. It’s I realistic to expect that a woman educated at the level that she is would’ve submitted to a stranger, just because he’s a man. Keep that in mind. She’s also a lawyer, so she was the expert in the law as it pertained to this situation.

@@WifeandWifeTV i agree, about the relationship thing...but when it came to other things that didnt require law education like choosing to stop and get food while on the run, holding the guy up and putting him in the trunk, and driving all the way to Louisiana just to get a car and get caught and killed in the end.... im not saying that his decisions would have been any better than hers but, with or without a law degree men are supposed to be natural leaders in a relationships or any form when dealing with women and im not discrediting what she was doing ijs saying that it seemed more like queen was the guider of the situation more than he was. Education only goes so far in critical situations and u cant unlearn what youve been taught, leadership gives u the force to move in a certain way that education just cant compare to . Education is only books, studying, degrees, and test. But leadership is guidance, control, composure, direction and destination.

Garvo Lotti i hear you that men are supposed to be the protectors, etc, but in this case he wouldn’t have known what to do. She’s an attorney, so she deals with law enforcement and criminals all the time. She has to defend them and because of that would understand better how to think like a criminal on the run and the next steps law enforcement would take - understanding the body language of people they interact with, etc. Because attorneys try cases, they understand how low enforcement moves. The only way he could’ve guided her was if he was a criminal, or worked in law enforcement; but, remember at the beginning of the movie he had no warrants, no arrests & likely no run ins with the law. They needed to humanize the black man. Can you imagine a movie depicting a black man being the expert on how to outrun/avoid the law? After just kxlling a cop (albeit in self defense)? That would’ve just been another stereotype of black male “thug” thought process. It would’ve been assumed that he was an expert because he had a criminal past. They needed to humanize him. They had to know that he wasn’t an expert in that situation, because he was an upstanding Citizen. They didn’t have a black woman “ leading” just for the sake of it, or being overly aggressive without merit (like they normally portray in the male/female dynamic) - she was an attorney. It was called for in this situation. She was the expert. Try to think from that perspective.

Thank you for your brilliant review / commentary on Queen And Slim! As a 10 time best selling author I loved everything about the movie. As a writer / director if the audience can predict my next action or scene I am of no use. The movie was a roller coaster of emotions. Everytime the audience was prepared to celebrate or become sad, the writer elevated or quickly shifted ones emotions. It was a riveting and emotional game of chess - that made it mandatory for a discussion to be had during the movie and immediately afterwards.

One Journey I’ve seen the movie and I wouldn’t describe Queen as angry, but rather guarded. She’s a defense attorney who never turns that mindset off. And the film gives more context to that when it reveals her trauma midway through. It really is a great (albeit not perfect) film and I recommend it. It’s your choice, but if we continue to pass on Black films because every detail isn’t what we’d write ourselves then Hollywood will shut us out (again). The “others” are already painting this movie as anti white propaganda and trying to silence it. Let’s not help them

I think the scene with the child was fine especially since the clips went back and forth between the love scene. It was passion & ignorance displayed in two different forms. I appreciated it. But that ending..... are there any films where we dont die to become a legacy ? I do agree with your opinion with some of the choices they made was unrealistic. The writers kind of used the love is blind theme throughout the whole thing

This movie was an opportunity lost. The set-up and the encounter with the cop was brilliant. What we should’ve got was a high-stakes thriller, but what we actually got was a combination of quirky set pieces. I thought the characters were well drawn at the start, but the characters didn’t develop convincingly. This isn’t a bad film, it’s unsatisfying.
