John and Freddie shared a love for funk. Fun to pair the known tunes with the lessor known gems when exploring genre styles. COOL CAT (Queen official lyric video) and DRAGON ATTACK (Live at Montreal) are two contrasting takes on this same path.

Queen Fun Fact: On Another One Bites the Dust... despite what is shown on the video, Brian's only contribution to the guitar parts was the "weird sounds" (the revving, followed by the kind "spaceship" effect) utilizing the unique qualities of his homemade guitar The Red Special. The rest of the rhythmic electric guitar parts, as well as the iconic bass line, were played by bassist John Deacon -- John is himself a quite skilled guitarist and often played the rhythm parts on studio recordings alongside Brian's leads. (NOTE : Brian *did* play the guitar parts on live performances of this ... but he himself said he'd had to work really hard on learning and mastering the style for this song)

Freddie designed Queen's Logo. It is built on the astrologic signs of the four band members. Two lions for Roger and John (Leo), a crab for Brian (Cancer) and two fairies for Freddie (Virgo). Freddie had a degree in Design, Fashion and Advertising. John said that originally this song was supposed to be funny, about cowboys actually biting the dust but the song came out much heavier than he had originally thought so he changed the lyrics to be about the St. Valentines Day Massacre.

This was actually Queen's biggest selling single (written by Queen''s secret weapon John Deacon), which only got released as a single because Micheal Jackson convinced them it would be a hit. It reached number 1 in the Billboard top 10 and stayed in that chart for 31 weeks, it also reached number 2 in both the Hot Soul Singles chart and the Disco Top 100 chart. It would appear the M.J. could recognize a hit when he heard it.

Queen has tons of hits. They have a massive catalog. Check out Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow 1974 and White Queen live at Hammersmith Odeon 1975. It's hard to pick a favorite Queen song but I think this Hammersmith performance of White Queen is probably my favorite. I love the musical interlude between Brian and Freddie. The musicianship among these guys is just incredible. So talented!

Summer 1988, Marine Corps Boot Camp, Parris Island... had a drill instructor who loved this song. Whenever someone would drop from our platoon this DI would do the inventory to make sure the person leaving had everything needed to go to their next platoon. During the inventory he'd find a can of something (brass polish, spray starch, etc) and bang it of the table... THUMP...THUMP...THUMP and we all had to sing "Another One Bites The Dust"

Had the pleasure of seeing Queen open up for Mott the Hoople at the Uris Theater on Broadway in Times Square, May '74. Fantastic evening of theatrical rock and roll. Queen great ones - "Keep Yourself Alive", "Liar", "Now I'm Here", "Killer Queen", "Brighton Rock". You can probably tell that I'm partial to the early stuff. I hope Biz considers some Mott the Hoople also in the future. "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll."

"Another One Bites the Dust" dropped when I was heading into eighth grade. The song was all over pop radio for several months, but I was growing away from dance music at the time, so "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" from that same album was more my speed. They dropped "Under Pressure" the following year. I remember hearing "Killer Queen" on the radio when I was still a little kid, and "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" in grade school. Kids have been stomping out "We Will Rock You" on bleachers since the moment Queen dropped it in 1977. Freddie Mercury shines on "Another One Bites the Dust" as always, but for me the work Roger Taylor and John Deacon put into it, the ease mostly, provides the foundation without which Mercury wouldn't have flown so fast, to play out a pun on his surname.

I was 9 when this song came out and it was so huge, even a little kid like me became aware of it. I mean, Alvin and The Chipmunks covered it that same year! I begged my parents to buy me this album and they eventually did - got it and their other huge album, A Night at the Opera, on vinyl for Christmas 1980. My little brother and I wore those albums out in the following years! Queen is still one of my favorite bands.

Another reworded version of this song coming out in 1980 was the .... Weird Al Yankovic parody version titled - - Another one * Rides the Bus....LOL I remember working night-shift stocking shelves and in 1980 81 remember .... the Weird Al version played like every night on the radio station we listened to for some reason I never forget and never heard since, or reacted to, or played on oldies/all 80s FM radio I still listen to in my car.

Like several Rock bands of the 1970s they came up with a song that was danceable so they can cash in on the current Disco trend of the era and ended up with one of their all time classics that still gets played these days on Rock radio.

Glad you've gotten back to this amazing group of musicians. You have to remember all of the members wrote hits, so the standards for choosing material for an album were very high. They had one rule, whoever wrote the song got the final say. I dare say John (Bassist/Writer) made the call to keep Brian May (Rock Guitar) out of the track. Queen were the first group to be inducted into the songwriters Hall of Fame. Fun fact: John Deacon's bass line was inspired by "Good Times" by the disco group Chic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH23daObrK6jnNk&ab_channel=MASTERMUSICBOX In an interview with NME, Chic co-founder Bernard Edwards stated, "That Queen record came about because that Queen bass player ... spent some time hanging out with us at our studio."
